GUIDE TO CEILING SELECTIONPERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONSAESTHETICSAs one of the most visible features of a space, the ceiling plays a critical role in the overall aesthetic of any project. USG Ceilingproducts are built to provide design freedom and ease of installation to help you balance performance, aesthetics and value.Designer Ceilings: Available in textures ranging from fine to bold, several contemporary patterns, and a choice of materials forspecialized performance, from enhanced durability to cleanability and sag resistance.Classic Ceilings: Fissured panels with good sound control, providing smart value for a variety of retail and commercialenvironments. Many available with Firecode formulation for use in fire-rated assemblies.Fiberglass Ceilings: Fiberglass Vinyl Panels offer superior sound absorption (NRC) that are ideal in open-plan areas. Panels arelightweight and feature a washable surface.In addition, panels are available in an assortment of sizes and in various edge profiles, which further enhance ceiling design.Many USG ceilings offer enhanced sound control to help improve privacy and comfort, as well as productivity in commercialenvironments. Look for these performance attributes:SOUND CONTROLNRC (sound absorption): Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) measures the amount of sound a panel can absorb. For example, apanel with an NRC of 0.55 will absorb 55 percent of sound reaching it. An NRC of 0.70 and above is important in environmentssuch as open-plan offices and schools.CAC (sound containment): Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC) measures a panel’s ability to prevent sound from passing into adjacentspaces. For example, a panel with 33 CAC reduces transmitted sound by 33 decibels (dB). High CAC (40) is ideal for privateoffices and activity areas such as media rooms.LIGHT REFLECTANCEFIRE RESISTANCELight Reflectance (LR) value represents the percentage of light reflected from the surface of a material. Ceilings with anLR above 0.75 help prevent eyestrain and conserve energy by reducing the number of lighting fixtures needed to properlyilluminate a space. High-LR panels enhance all lighting schemes, especially those that include indirect lighting. Valuesabove LR 0.85 are considered high.All USG acoustical ceiling panels are rated Class A (the highest possible) as tested to CAN/ULC-S102. These materials do notsustain a fire when flame is removed (result 25 FSI) and do not generate significant amounts of visibility-obscuring smoke(result 50 SDI).Panels identified with the fire icon (MOULD, MILDEW ANDSAG RESISTANCELOW EMISSIONS (VOC)) are available with Firecode formulation for use in fire-rated assemblies.USG Acoustical Ceiling panels with ClimaPlus Performance are covered by a limited warranty to be free from the growth of mouldand mildew for 30 years from the date of installation when used with USG Donn Brand Suspension Systems. These panels includean antimicrobial treatment on the painted surface containing a mould-inhibiting agent that provides broad-spectrum control forthe growth of mould and mildew over the warranty period.
