Thunder4000Thunder6000ThunderFormRoad Thunder MobileRoad Thunder UnloadedTHUNDERFORCE underWireThunderStuffHard WearCompetitionsAwardsOrganizationsWould you buy a car without taking it for a test drive? Of course not.You wouldn’t know how it performs. How it handles. How muchhorsepower it has. How fast it goes from zero to 60.It’s the same with your audio gear. You need to know how it’s goingto perform. How loud it will go. How far you can turn it up– and how long you can keep it up.Technological innovations. Amplifier performance guarantees. The most radical subwoofer in the world (we don’t call it RFLfor nothin’). With MTX, you CAN turn it up AND keep it up.3

AMPLIFIERSSOMETHING FOR EVERYONEThere’s a reason that MTX Thunder amplifiersare available in three categories: Thunder4000,Thunder6000, and Thunder8000. It’s because ourcustomers aren’t identical. Some of you like yourmusic well-modulated and clear; others like itobscenely loud. Some of you want to “set itand forget it”. Others are control freaks. Someof you watch every penny; for others, thehighest performance has no price tag. There’sone thing that all the Thunder amps have incommon – they’re feature-packed, and alwaysready to deliver the power.A discussion of some of the key features isincluded below. For all the specs and other gorydetails on the individual amplifiers, use the charton page 13.Built-in Crossovers: Every new ThunderAmplifier has a built-in crossover, designedfor maximum flexibility of system design andconfiguration. Besides its role as the traffic copof the audio signal, it’s also the job of thecrossover to make your bass sound like itcomes from the front of the car (we call it"bass up front"). Remember, subwoofers areinstalled in the trunk because that’s wherethe space is, not because bass sounds bettercoming from behind you.RCA Outputs: Many Thunder amplifiers featureRCA Outputs, so you can feed additional amps.Input Select Switch: It’s featured on all the4- and 5-channel amplifiers. It allows a2-channel signal from your radio to drive allthe channels of the amplifier. It’s like gettinga built-in “Y” connector.Compression Circuit: This patent-pending circuitis featured in three of our higher poweredThunder amplifiers. It helps to guard againstoverdriving your speakers during dynamicmusical passages, even at high Sound PressureLevels (SPL).KEEP IT UP – FREEAt MTX Audio, we feel so strongly about going beyond the ordinary that we puta free T-shirt inside the box with every MTX Audio Thunder amplifier*. Now, youcan look as good as you sound. How cool is that?*Except Thunder4122

“Smart-Engage” Auto-turn-on: This is a reallycool feature that you’ll appreciate if you’re notplanning on replacing your factory radio."Smart-Engage" is MTX Audio’s auto-turn-oncircuit that automatically turns the amp on whenit senses the source voltage from the high-levelinputs from the factory radio. This means thatyou don’t have to remove the factory radio duringyour installation. And it’s patented, so otherscan’t leech off our genius.Individual Gain Controls: These make it easierto center the soundstage.Thunder EQ: This bass boost control, centeredat 40Hz lets you severely boost the low-endfrequencies – for when you need maximumThunder.EBC Port: for easy external bass control. And onsome amps, you can get EBC2 – it lets you controlmultiple amps from one EBC (for those controlmaniacs we talked about earlier).CERTIFIED POWER“MTX steps up tothe plate with thisClass D subwooferamp and knocksone out of thepark True beautyis relative toefficiency andoutput power into2 ohms. What aphilosophy !”– Car SoundMagazineWhen you choose an amplifier, it’s importantto know how it stacks up. At MTX we’ve chosenthe most conservative (and we believe, the mosthonest) way to rate our amps. We test at RMSpower at 12.5 volts, and show you the spec fordynamic power at 14.4 volts That way, you can seehow the amp is rated under the RMS “standard”and also how it performs under more normaloperation. And, our technicians test EVERYAMPLIFIER before it ships to make sure it meetsor exceeds spec. They record the results on yourown, personal performance certificate that youget in the box with your amp.The engineers and technicians who designand test MTX Audio Thunder amplifiers are anodd bunch. There’s a rumor that they get theirkicks out of going to audio stores that sell ourcompetitors’ amplifiers. They ask how the ampsare tested and request proof of performance. They get a rush from seeing the sales person’seyes roll around in his head. Cruel.5

AMPLIFIERSTHE TECHNOLOGYAt MTX Audio, we’re technology-freaks andmanufacturing geeks. From the first time a newproduct idea is generated, through to themanufacturing and shipping process. That’swhy, on the new Thunder amplifiers, we useIntelligent Surface Mount Technology (ISMT).ISMT is a method of designing and manufacturingproducts. The parts in ISMT are actually mountedon the Surface of the amplifier circuit board, rather than through the board.INTELLIGENT SURFACEMOUNT TECHNOLOGYThe components surface mounted on the amplifiercircuit board during the ISMT process are highlyresistant to vibration and can withstand theabuse of the automotive environment.ISMT is a whole lot more than just a new coolway to put parts on a circuit board. Our MTXelectrical engineering brainiacs use ISMT to itsgreatest potential – from board layout, to theselection of components. Technology is the toolthat makes sure that your amplifier is the best itcan be.An example of the advantage of ISMT can beseen on the circuit board on the right. You caneasily see the unique “cellular” approach to thecircuit board layout. By isolating each section ofthe amplifier in its own “cell”, the amplifier haslow, to non-existent, noise.Through-Hole ComponentA Advanced Computerized Protection Circuitfor maximum power output and protectionB Class A 100% Discrete Driver CircuitTopology is linear, resulting in lowdistortion and a high damping factorfor tight, controlled bassC Patented PWM Mosfet Switching PowerSupply for superior sonic performanceD Low Impedance, High Power Transformersprovide more power and produce less heatSurface Mount Component“Many MTX amps have made theirway through our lab, and when itcomes to noise specs, [MTX amps]are practically always among thebest in the industry”– Car Sound and PerformanceMagazine, October 2000EVIDENCE OF RELIABILITYWe are certainly confident in the quality and reliability of our products. That’s whyevery dealer installed MTX Audio Thunder amplifier carries a 3-year warranty. So, go ahead and turn it up – you can keep it up.

PURE N-CHANNEL DESIGNPURE N-CHANNEL DESIGNMTX Thunder Amplifiers have always been builtwith a Pure N-Channel VFET Design. What’s aVFET? And what does N-Channel mean?Well gather ’round kiddies, and we’lltell you. (Yeah, yeah, this is a lesson– but keep reading – this iscool stuff). To truly understand how ourPure N-Channel Technologyimproves the sound of ouramplifiers, it helps tounderstand how the amplifier’soutput stage works. Even if youdon’t know much about audio, you’veprobably already figured out how a speakermakes sound – the cone travels back and forthto move air. It’s the job of the amplifier’s outputstage to control the speaker’s movement bymanaging the power applied to the speaker. This is accomplished by the positive and negativecircuits located on the amplifier’s output stage. The positive circuit pushes the speaker and thenegative circuit pulls the speaker (easy so far, huh?)Within these positive and negativecircuits are VFET (Vertical-MountedFETS) MOSFET transistors. TheseVFETs control the alternating currenttraveling to the speaker. Each of thepositive and negative circuits use adedicated VFET to distribute thepower to the speaker. A commonapproach is to use an N-ChannelVFET for positive (to push the speaker)and a P-Channel VFET for negative(to pull the speaker back). SEEMS likea good idea. But, our engineeringguys (who study circuits for funinstead of doing real people thingslike going to movies) identified severalproblems with this scenario.First, in many cases, the P-ChannelVFETs operate slower than theN-Channel VFETs. This means that engineers haveto add circuits to compensate for the difference. When you have to add circuits to compensatefor inadequacies in your components, that’s notsmart design. And, even worse, in manycases, the P-Channel VFETs are morehighly resistant devices (that meansthey waste more power as heatrather than driving the speaker). What this means is that theP-Channel VFETs can have amuch lower USABLE powerrating than N-Channel VFETs.The graph below shows anactual USABLE power comparisonbetween N- and P-Channel VFETs ona 100 watt amplifier. MTX Audio is onestep ahead of the game with our Pure N-ChannelDesign amplifiers. We design our amplifiersto use only N-Channel VFETs on both thepositive and negative circuits of the output stage(PURE N-Channel Design). So, no additionalcircuits are needed to compensate for theshortcomings of the P-channel VFETs. And, boththe positive and negative circuits have equalUsable Power Ratings.Pure N-Channel Design:1. It’s more linear, so the speakeris better controlled.2. The signal travels through fewerparts so the signal-to-noise ratiois enhanced.3. Power rating is better, so theamplifier runs louder, longer. For those of you who have beenreading this carefully, you’re probablysaying, “Well if this Pure N-Channelthing is so great, why doesn’teverybody do it?” BECAUSE IT’SHARDER. It’s a circuit that has to bemore carefully engineered to make itwork properly – something we’vebeen doing ever since the first Thunder ampwas born in 1995.LOYD IVEY – MTX AUDIO FOUNDERLoyd Ivey, President and CEO of MTX Audio, 30 years ago took a garage-basedspeaker cabinet business and an intense love for music and turned it into MTX Audio– the leading manufacturer of high performance car, home, and professional audiogear. He has been successful with a very simple philosophy: provide high quality, high performance audio. Today, Loyd has over 1,000 employees in Wisconsin, Illinois,Arizona, Missouri and Texas.

ADAPTIVE CLASS D TECHNOLOGYUNCOMMON TECHNOLOGYClass D technology is another approach toamplifier output stage design. Designed to drivesubwoofers, Class D technology is highlyefficient. You get increased poweroutput, with less current draw, ina smaller footprint. MTX Audiohas three Class D amplifiers: Thunder4250D Thunder6500D Thunder81000DCOMMON CLASS DClass D amplifiers are pretty commonthese days. It seems like everybody has one.Let’s discuss the common approach.Amplifiers that use Class D technology areswitching amplifiers. These amplifiers featureMOSFET transistors that operate as a switchand are used to manage the power appliedto the speaker. The controlledswitching powerdistribution createsa square waveknown as PulseWidth Modulation.High frequencyenergy is generatedfrom this squarewave and is comCommon Class D Harmonicsmonly concentrated Notice the large amount of extraneous harmonics at audible levelsat one point thatmust be filteredfrom the audiopath of the amp.Harmonics fromthis concentratedhigh frequencyenergy travel intothe radio frequencyrange, and cancause interferenceMTX Adaptive Class D Harmonicswith the radio’sNotice the extraneous harmonics removed from audible frequenciesreception or bepicked up by the audio system’s ground. That means NOISE.MTX ADAPTIVE CLASS D– AN UNCOMMON APPROACHMTX changed the rules with our innovative, newAdaptive Class D Technology. With ourapproach, the amplifier’s switchingenergy is constantly changing andis moved away from FM radiofrequency ranges as theamplifier’s load and outputincreases. This ensures thatthe harmonics do not interferewith the radio’s reception andare not picked up by the audiosystem’s ground. This improves theamplifier’s overall signal-to-noise ratio, and eliminates interference that is generatedby more common Class D amplifiers. In otherwords, listeners can enjoy all the clean, musicalsounds from the radio without the interferingnoise of the Class D amplifier. Technology. What a great thing when you use it right.9

AMPLIFIERSALL FOR ONE4-CHANNEL AMPLIFIERThe Thunder4000 amplifier seriescould be called the all-purposecategory. There’s an ampfor every installpossibility: 2-channel 4-channel 5-channel Class DThunder4244 – 400 Watts Dynamic PowerBridgedThis amplifier features a flexible crossoverconfiguration (rear is high pass/low passswitchable and defeatable, front is low pass, bothfixed at 85Hz). If you plan to use thehigh level inputs from thefactory radio, our “Smart-Engage”auto-turn-on circuit makes installationa snap – you won’t have to remove thefactory radio. This amplifier is flexiblein its design, for asingle amplifier/factory integrationthat makes sense. The crossover isfixed at 85 Hz,defeatable highpass on the frontand rear, andlow pass on thesub channel.Low level inputsmake connectionto your factorysystem intuitive.Thunder EQ bass boost and EBC port are included.MONO-BLOCK CLASS DThunder4250D – 350 Watts Dynamic Powerinto 2 ohmsThis subwoofer amplifier features our AdaptiveClass D Technology for large power numbers froma very small footprint. Thunder4250D features alow pass crossover, variable from 40Hz to 200Hz,this amp also contains both the Thunder EQ bassboost and an EBC2 port. Our “Smart-Engage”auto-turn-on circuit makes installation easy.ISO-FEETThe mounting feet on Thunder amps are made of insulating rubber, which isolatesthe chassis of the amp from the mounting surface to help prevent ground loops.“A simple and smart solution to a common problem.” Performance Auto & Soundmagazine, December 2000.

AMPLIFIERSTHUNDER60004-CHANNEL AMPLIFIERYou’ll pick Thunder6000 when you’re greedy. You want more – more power and morefeatures. To start, each Thunder6000amplifier has a large signal capability(8 Volt RMS input), for better integrationwith high voltage output source units, increasing dynamic range andto improve the system’s signalto-noise ratio (that means itsounds better).Thunder6304 – 660 Watts Dynamic Power BridgedThis 4-channel amplifier has the most flexiblecrossover we offer. On both front andrear channels, it’s variable from40Hz to 200Hz and selectablefor either high passor low pass.2-CHANNELAMPLIFIERThunder6152– 325 WattsDynamic PowerBridgedThe crossoveron this amp is12dB/octavehigh pass,24dB/octavelow pass, variable from40Hz to 200Hz.In low pass mode, the outputs are monoat 24dB/octave. It’s highlyflexible with varying slopeson the low and high pass to provideimproved “bass up front”.The "SummedOutput" jacksprovide a line levelsummed output of theright front/right rear andleft front/left rear inputsignals. This output istypically used to drive anexternal subwoofer amplifier. The parallel input switch allowsa 2-channel signal to drive all fourchannels (no need for a "Y" connector). This amp even has the MTX AudioThunder EQ bass boost!MONO-BLOCK CLASS DThunder6500D – 775 Watts Dynamic Powerinto 2 ohmsFeaturing MTX Audio’s Adaptive Class DTechnology, Thunder6500D has a low passcrossover, variable from 40Hz to 200Hz.We provide both low level and high level inputs, with MTX Audio’s “Smart Engage” function toallow for easy installation. We even include ourpatent-pending compression circuit to protectyour woofers when you’ve got it turned way up.1

AMPLIFIERSGET SERIOUSYou’ll use Thunder8000 amplifiers when youget really serious. When your need for poweris insatiable. There are only two amplifiers inthis series, but they are the leaders. The onesthat’ll take you to the top on theleader board.MONO-BLOCKCLASS D AMPLIFIERThunder81000D – 1500 Watts Dynamic Powerinto 2 ohmsThis amplifier is the one with the most teeth. It’s got it all. Adaptive Class D Technology, forhigh power in a small package. Anyone can makea high power amplifier in a big package. But ittakes smarts and careful engineeringto produce big power in asmall footprint.2-CHANNELAMPLIFIERThunder8302 – 425 WattsDynamic Power BridgedThe flexibility starts with the crossover. It’s 12dB/octave high pass, 24dB/octave low pass, variable from 40Hz to 200Hz. In low pass mode, the outputs are mono at 24dB/octave. It’s highlyflexible, with the varying slopes on the low andhigh pass providing improved “bass up front”.The EBC2 port, for easy external bass controlis also featured, along with the now-famousThunder EQ bass boost.Adaptive Class DTechnology is how wemake this amplifier soefficient at producingpower. The crossover islow pass, variable from40Hz to 200Hz. And, we’ve even built in ourcompression circuit, to protect your woofersat high SPL levels. Add in the EBC2 and theThunder EQ and this is one amp to be feared.Because of the high power output potentialof the Thunder8302, we’ve included ourcompression circuit. This way, when you turnthe volume up very, very high, the amp won’tgo into clipping during dynamic musicalpassages (this saves the life of your speakers).Read the shirt. We mean it.“[On the MTX 1000 Watt Class Damplifier] no discernible startup orshutdown noise was observed.”– Performance Auto & SoundMagazine, December 2000BIGGER IS BETTERThunder amplifiers use huge capacitors, instead of a more common approachthat uses several smaller ones. Reduced heat production and increased frequencyresponse are just two of the many benefits of larger capacitors. Look how bigthese babies are. Oh, mama!

SPEAKERSTHE FRONT STAGEThe front stage in car audio means that if youshut your eyes, you can visualize the locationof the performers and instruments on“stage” during a live performance. It’s the front speakers that recreatean accurate front stage experience.Thunder6000 Convertibles are oneof the most flexible ways thatyou’ll find to add superiormusicality and accurate stagingto your car audio system. The tweeter on the convertibles is a sonicallypure, 19 mm PEF dome, with a ferrofluid cooledneodymium magnet. In any configuration, the tweeter swivels, and when itconverts to a separate tweeter, youcan mount it using the includedflush or surface mount accessories. The midbass speakers have beenhighly engineered for superiorsound quality. The cone material isan injection-molded polypropylenewith pure titanium deposited onthe surface. Aside from the strikingappearance, this type of coneconstruction contributes to thespeaker’s durability. The machinedmidbass front and back platescomplete the classic look.CONWe call these convertibles, butthey ain’t no ragtops. SPEAKERSBUILT WITH THE MUSICIN MINDThunder8000 Component systems just might besome of the finest work that our MTX Audioacoustic engineers have ever done. Thesecomponent systems are for those who trulyappreciate the acoustic information in music. And they’re for the person who knows theirmusic – all the nuances, transients, accents, even where the performers were located in thesound stage. When you’re that close tothe music, you expect the imaging and stagingcharacteristics of your front speakers to beexceptional. Thunder8000 component systemswill not disappoint. They are true to the music. To achieve the kind of musical accuracy that youexpect from the finest components, we’vedesigned the midbass with elegant, high-enddie-cast frames. These tooled parts make aclassic cosmetic statement, and they also createa more durable frame. The cone material iscoated with titanium for a stylish, “bullet-proof”appearance. The machined front plates and backplates continue the MTX Audio dedication toquality engineering and attention to detail. For the tweeter, we’ve incorporated a 1" silkdome for accurate high frequency reproductionand cool it with ferrofluid. ALDSASYMMETRICAL LINEAR DRIVE SYSTEMALDS HIGH OUTPUT LOW DISTORTIONIt’s the technology behind MTX AudioThunder subwoofers. Take two cool ideas, put them together, and Presto – the wholeworld sounds better.COOL IDEA #1FLAT & PROGRESSIVESPIDERProgressive means that the spider’s stiffnessvaries across its surface. It’s like a shockabsorber – a loud musical passage is arough, rutted road. Better suspension, better ride, better sound.COOL IDEA #2EXTENDED POLE PIECETeamed with the flat progressive spider, this makes for a very linear, or straight, motion of the speaker. (Linearity is alsoengineeringese for low distortion.)Note: This cool idea combo is what makesyour tunes musical – even while your retinasare detaching from extreme SPL.Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is just oneof the many tools we use to ensure a superiorproduct. The graph above shows the suspensionon the speaker during its most extreme outwardtravel. We use this information to make surethat the mechanical stress is spread out evenlyacross the suspension, so our subwoofers willendure under the most demanding punishment.19

SUBWOOFERSSUPERIOR POWER HANDLINGThe finest amplifiers deserve to be paired withsuperior quality subwoofers and componentsystems. Thunder4000 subwoofers feature thesame ALDS (Asymmetrical Linear Drive System),common to all MTX Audio Thunder subwoofers(the flat progressive spider, combined with theextended, vented pole piece). We’ve addedsome other touches to make sure these speakersperform way, way, past your expectations. The voice coil is wound on an Apical voice coilformer for high power handling. The strontiumferrite magnet yields a highly efficient speaker(more efficient means better use of your amplifierpower).
