Ask students to discuss how HollisWoods’s journey might be compared to DorothyGale’s journey. Have them write a short paper thatHollis might write entitled “Dreams That You Dareto Dream Really Do Come True.”draw jubilant. She uses yellows, oranges, and pinks.Ask students to list and discuss the many differentemotions expressed in the book. Then have themselect appropriate colors for each emotion.Hollis Woods is searching for a home throughoutthe novel. Discuss Hollis’s idea of home. Sendstudents to the library to search for poems that dealwith the theme of home. Select a poem that bestdescribes Hollis’s feelings of home at the end of thenovel. Send students to the library to find outsymptoms, treatment, and life expectancy ofsomeone who suffers from Alzheimer’s or dementia.Students may also want to use an almanac to findstatistics regarding the number of people in theUnited States who are victim to these diseases.Hollis Woods says that she will draw animal printsfor Steven. Find out the kind of animals that mightlive in the mountains where Branches, the Regans’summer home, is located in New York. Then havestudents use books in the library to find footprintsfor each of these animals. Draw and label them. Whywould Hollis think this a perfect gift for Steven?Have students illustrate a wordless picture bookcalled My Family that Hollis might make forChristina, her new little sister.Careers—Beatrice had been an art teacher for 40years, but had never seen anyone who could do whatHollis could do.
