At the time of writing, our PostOffices – at the centre of communities, particularly intowns and regional areas – remain open to service theircommunities, and the Philatelic team continues to recordour cultural life and natural history in stamps.A major regional philatelic event affected by COVID-19was the NZ2020 FIAP International Stamp Exhibition, due to the escalating threat and correspondingrestrictions. In support of show organisers, we will goahead with the release of the show-themed minisheet set, available in mint condition only. The Navigating History stamp issue commemorates asignificant event in Australian history. In 1768, CaptainJames Cook, departed England on the HMS Endeavour,on his first South Pacific voyage. First sighting Point Hickson 20 April 1770, Cook then sailed north, charting theeast coast of Australia. The format of the stamps in thisissue is sure to attract plenty of collector interest. Thefive stamps are each worth 1.10, and their illustrationspresent a dual perspective of this historic voyage. Eachstamp design is made up of two panes, and each features“Australia” and “55c”. The lower pane includes the yeardate, and three perforation marks separate the panes. The stamp measures 75mm (h) x 26mm (w).Applications for the reproduction ofAustralian stamps should be made inwriting to:Manager, PhilatelicAustralia PostGPO Box 1777MELBOURNE VIC 3001australianstamps@auspost.com.auPages 3 and 8: Navigating History: EndeavourVoyage, 250 Years, Gilimbaa Creative Agency, page 14: Earth Guardians (QuestaGame,first-of-its-kind game for mobile phonesthat gets players outdoors to discover, learn about and help map biodiversity).Unless other wise supplied, imagesby shutterstock.com Copyright 2020 Australian PostalCorporation. The year of release appears in the bottom half of the stamp design. The Navigating History stamp issue marks the250th anniversary of the first Pacific voyage ofHMS Endeavour, the first recorded ship to makelandfall on the east coast of the continent nowcalled Australia. Among those on board werethe captain, Lieutenant James Cook, naturalistsJoseph Banks and Daniel Solander, and artistSydney Parkinson. For several months from April 1770, they chartedthe east coast, collecting and sketching the floraand fauna. The continent was subsequently claimedfor the British crown on the basis that it was terranullius, or empty land. Of course, this was a fallacy,as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hadbeen living on the land for at least 60,000 years. The gummed first day cover shown oppositefeatures a cut-down of the full stamp design setshown above. Various efforts were made to prevent the cattle from becominginbred, including the importation of a blue-coloured Angus-Aberdeenbull. Over time, the cattle began to throw a grey-blue colour, resulting ina unique breed, the Norfolk Blue, which is mid-sized and has a pleasanttemperament. This stamp issue presents a Norfolk Blue bull on one stamp, and a cow and calf on the other.
