Be sure mower is level and area around oilfill is clean. Remove engine oil cap and fillto the fullline on the dipstick.NOTE: Allow oil to settle down intoengine for accurate dipstick reading. Engine holds 20 ozs. of oil. For type andgrade of oil to use, see "ENGINE" inMaintenance section of this manual. Pour oil slowly. Do not over fill. Check oil level before each use. Add oil ifneeded. Fill to full line on dipstick. To read proper level, tighten engine oil capeach time. Reinstall engine oil cap and tighten. Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or each season. You may needto change the oil more often under dusty, dirty conditions.6

ADD GASOLINEMOWING TIPS Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuelfreshness.A, WARNING:Experience indicates thatalcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days orlonger. Drain the fuel tank, start theengine and let it run until fuel lines andcarburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. See Storage Instructions foradditional information.Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in fuel tankor permanent damage may occur.ACAUTION"Fill to bottom of gas tankfiller neck. Do not overfill. Wipe off anyspilled oil or fuel. Do not store, spill or usegasoline near an open flame. Under certain conditions, such as verytall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grassclippings. It may also be necessary toreduce ground speed and/or run thelawn mower over the area a secondtime. For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly. For better grass bagging and mostcutting conditions, the engine speedshould be set in the fast position. For side discharge lawn mowers, cutting in a counter-clockwisedirection,starting at the outside of the area to becut, spreads grass clippings moreevenly and puts less load on theengine. To keep clippings off ofwalkways, flower beds, etc., make thefirst cuts in a clockwise direction. Pores in cloth grass catchers canbecome filled with dirt and dust withuse and catchers will collect less grass. To prevent this, regularly hose catcheroff with water and let dry before using.Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will help engine air flow andextend engine life.TO START ENGINE To start a cold engine, push primerthree (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is notusually necessary when starting anengine which has already run for a fewminutes. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starterrope to snap back. To stop engine, release operatorpresence control bar.NOTE: In cooler weather it may benecessary to repeat priming steps. Inwarmer weather over priming may causeflooding and engine will not start. If youdo flood engine, wait a few minutesbefore attempting to start and do notrepeat priming steps.Engine oil capGasoline fillercap7

MULCHING MOWING TIPScutting height so that the lawn mower cutsoff only the top one-third of the grassblades. If the lawn is overgrown it will benecessary to raise the height of cut toreduce pushing effort and to keep fromoverloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy mulching, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.Certain types of grass and grass conditions may require that an area be mulcheda second time to completely hide theclippings. When doing a second cut, mowacross or perpendicular to the first cut path.Change your cutting pattem from week toweek. Mow north to south one week thenchange to east to west the next week. Thiswill help prevent matting and graining ofthe lawn.IMPORTANT: For best performance, keepmower housing free of built-up grass andtrash. See "Cleaning" in MAINTENANCEsection of this manual. The special mulching blade will recut thegrass clippings many times and reducethem in size so that as they fall onto thelawn they will disperse into the grass andnot be noticed. Also, the mulched grasswill biodegrade quickly to provide nutrientsfor the lawn. Always mulch with yourhighest engine (blade) speed as this willprovide the best recutting action of theblades. Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wetgrass tends to form clumps and interfereswith the mulching action. The best time tomow your lawn is the early aftemoon. Atthis time the grass has dried and the newlycut area will not be exposed to the directsun. For best results, adjust the lawn mowert / i ' '-8Max. 113
