ScopeThis section provides guidance for the selection of the properLHS actuator to suit specific operational requirements. A basicunderstanding of scotch yoke actuators and the typical applicationsin which they are used is provided in order to assist in selectionof the most suitable actuator. While the selection procedures andproduct data contained herein cover many applications, due to thewide range of applications in which the LHS actuators can be used, this information will not cover every set of operational requirements. The Limitorque applications team is always available to assessspecific applications and help with selection of the appropriate LHSactuators. Please contact your local office for assistance.2. General Definitions/Terms UsedQuarter-turnA device that rotates by a nominal 90 . Limitorque LHS Hydraulic Heavy-Duty Actuator Series FCD LFENTB0003-00-AQ - 11/14Safety FactorA factor multiplied by the valve’s basic required torque value to increase the amount of torque required tomeet safety requirements in a given application. When the valve’s torque requirements are not known withcertainty, or due to other application demands, use of a safety factor is required in the selection processin order to meet the worst-case torque requirements.Hydraulic Break TorqueOutput torque when the actuator is in the position to start the pressure stroke. [The torque required toinitiate the pressure stroke.]Hydraulic End TorqueOutput torque at the end limit of the pressure stroke. [The torque required to seat the valve at the end ofthe pressure stroke.]Run TorqueThe output torque recorded while the actuator is in the mid-position of the pressure stroke (45 ). Forsymmetrical yoke double-acting actuators, this is the minimum torque output obtained during thecomplete stroke.Spring Break TorqueThe output torque when the actuator is in the position to start the spring stroke. [The torque required toinitiate the spring stroke.] The spring is fully compressed at this position and generates the maximumspring force.Spring End TorqueThe output torque when the actuator has reached the end limit of spring stroke. [The torque required toseat the valve at the end of the spring stroke.] The spring is fully extended at this position and generatesthe minimum spring force.Minimum TorqueThe output torque at an intermediate position of the spring stroke, where the output torque of the actuatoris at its lowest value.MOPMaximum operating pressure of an actuator3. Inputs for Sizing Hydraulic ScotchYoke ActuatorsDue to the scotch yoke mechanism, LHS actuators have a particularU-shaped output torque curve whether powered by a fixed supplypressure or the spring. For a proper actuator model selection, the safety factors betweenactuator output torque and valve torque requirement shall becalculated at least in six points along the valve stroke. In addition afinal check is necessary to guarantee that actuator Maximum OutputTorque does not exceed valve Maximum Allowable Stem Torque(MAST).Figure 1: Actuator OPEN (by hydraulic) Torque Curve: Single Acting Spring Return – Fail Close (CW)flowserve.com7

Limitorque LHS Hydraulic Heavy-Duty Actuator Series FCD LFENTB0003-00-AQ - 11/144. SelectionThe most common application of clockwise rotation to close avalve is considered for these selection examples. The start to open or hydraulic break torque of the valve (BTO) isconsidered the maximum required torque by the valve. An actuatorshall exceed the valve torque requirement at all positions of therotation. The start/end and minimum torque output for a doubleacting actuator are given in the charts. For spring-return actuators, the spring and the hydraulic strokes’ lowest start/minimum/endoutput torque values are given in the charts.4.1. Double-Acting Actuator Selection4.1.1. Select the operating pressure column that is equal toor less than the known minimum operating pressure.Look up the start/end and minimum torque values, under the selected pressure column, that exceed the valve’smaximum requirements.4.2.5. Refer the performance data table to ensure the maximumsupply pressure to the actuator does not exceed the MOP ofthe actuator.4.2.6. If the maximum supply pressure exceeds the MOP, it may berequired to use a pressure-regulating device at the inlet tothe actuator or an alternate actuator model may be selectedthat is rated for a higher MOP.4.3. Spring-Return, Fail-CCWActuator Selection4.3.1. From the spring torque column, locate the spring starttorque value that exceeds the valve’s maximum unseatingtorque requirement (Fail-Open application).4.1.2. Locate the actuator model corresponding to the selection.4.3.2. Moving to the right along that row, locate the column corresponding to the minimum operating pressure available to theactuator and read the pressure stroke end torque.4.1.3. Refer the performance data table to ensure the maximumsupply pressure to the actuator does not exceed the MOP ofthe actuator.4.3.3. The hydraulic end torque at the minimum available pressuremust be higher than the valve’s seating torque requirement(torque to fully close the valve).4.1.4. If the maximum supply pressure exceeds the MOP, it may berequired to use a pressure-regulating device at the inlet tothe actuator or an alternate actuator model may be selectedthat is rated for a higher MOP.4.3.4. The hydraulic start torque must exceed the valve’s torquerequirement at this position to close the valve in the CWdirection.4.2. Spring-Return, Fail-CWActuator Selection4.2.1. From the spring torque column, locate the spring end torquevalue that exceeds the valve’s maximum seating torquerequirement.4.3.5. Refer to the performance data table to ensure the maximumsupply pressure to the actuator does not exceed the MOP ofthe actuator.4.3.6. If the maximum supply pressure exceeds the MOP, it may berequired to use a pressure-regulating device at the inlet tothe actuator or an alternate actuator model may be selectedthat is rated for a higher MOP.4.2.2. Moving to the right along that row, locate the column corresponding to the minimum operating pressure available to theactuator and read the pressure stroke start torque.4.2.3. The pressure stroke start torque at the minimum pressuremust be higher than the valve’s unseating torque requirement.4.2.4. The hydraulic end torque must exceed the valve’s torquerequirement at this stroke end position to open the valve fullyin the CCW direction.flowserve.com9

2. LHS Hydraulic actuators deliver up to 250 kNm* (184 000 ft-lb) of precisely controlled torque. LHS Limitorque Hydraulic Actuator is enlarging the recent Limitorque Fluid Power Systems family of heavy-duty scotch yoke actuators. The same design philosophy introduced on heavy-duty LPS actuators has been adopted for the LHS range, bringing enhanced

Note: The LHS’s generated by JMP are actually maximin LHS’s. By this, I mean that from among all possible LHS’s, JMP picks the one that is maximin. By so doing, JMP eliminates “poor” LHS’s and guarantees that it generates an LHS that spreads points out reasonably evenly.
