What is steampunk design: 3 FREE STEAMPUNK PROJECTSDEMONSTRATING HOW TO MAKE STEAMPUNK JEWELRYThe Steampunk TrendJILL STEVENSVintage industrial eleganceBy ANNIE OSBURNphotoS: jill stevensHonoring the industrial and steam engine eras, designer Jill Stevens’ passion is to bring obsoleteobjects back to life. “It’s an important distinction that Steampunk jewelry is not necessarilyabout found objects,” notes Stevens.“Steampunk style focuses on creating analternate presentation of gadgetry from atime in history when things were steam powered. My jewelry is a simpler representation, without heavy modifications. I create an iconof each object, watch piece, or gear in its entirety and try to maintain the innate beauty ofthat object.”A former social worker, Stevens credits herinterest in gadgets and technology to propelling her into jewelry making. “I’ve always beeninspired by industrial and obsolete objects, finding something familiar and unwanted, andthen reinterpreting it and bringing it back tolife,” adds Stevens, who is now venturing intorepurposing car parts as a jewelry medium.“Part of what I love is learning about the history of the pieces I use and the companies thatmade them. I now know more about old carsthan I did before!” 25- 85 dustandco.comSteampunk style has found its way into seed bead artistLeslie Rogalski’s work, as well, notably within herherringbone-stitched beadwork cuff designed with Japanese cylinder beads, watch parts, metal “gizmos” andone of her favorite gadgets, the O-ring. “I have alwaysbeen interested in the Steampunk genre of film andliterature, from H.G. Wells to Sherlock Holmes. Now,Steampunk is in the fashion world with elements fromturn-of-the-century military and industrial innovation,” says Rogalski.“I like an urban tribal look. As manufacturersstarted coming out with more and more interestingmaterials and chains, I responded and started incorporating them into my seed bead work. As an artform, there is a very feminine aspect to Steampunk, aswell. Even with the growing interest in Gothic and vampiric ephemera, Steampunk is there in the shadows— no pun intended!” 40- 600 leslierogalski.comOriginally published in Lapidary Journal jewelry artist, MARCH 2011 F W Media, Inc. No stranger to thefiner things, Wolbrom grew up in NewYork City’s diamond district and jokinglyrefers to her work as the “Tiffany’s of Steampunk.” Celebritiesand fashion industry trend-setters alike collect her mixed-mediacuffs (created in collaboration with textile artist Teresa Stanton).“Steampunk style is in my blood,” admits Wolbrom. “The gearingand mechanics of Steampunk jewelry remind us of a time when thingswere truly made by hand, like the fine timepieces I use that date to themid-1800s.” Stand-outs among Wolbrom’s eclectic and bold designsinclude an ornate dangle bracelet with hefty slices of antique watchparts set with rubies, and a Gothic black-leather wrist cuff adornedwith clock parts and printed matter — and a raven, for added measure. 65- 700 etsy.com/shop/edmdesignsSARAH MARTINFor a unique take on Steampunk style, designerSarah Martin creates reversible designs encasedin resin. Tiny gears, watch parts, and wire shapesare meticulously set in aluminum frames for anentirely different expression.“Encasing my pieces in resin creates a seethrough window so the interior parts can interactwith each other. My work fits the genre, but notthe standard,” says Martin. “I like the hard industrial design of Steampunk, while incorporatingnatural, unexpected elements juxtaposed with themechanical gears, like the beauty of wood which Iuse in my cuff links.”While resin-encased Steampunk designs giveMartin a unique approach, she admits the process is time consuming. Hours spent achievingthe perfect suspension of components within theresin make her designs truly one-of-a-kind laborsof love. 68- 85 etsy.com/shop/sarahlynnedesignsANNIE OSBURN has been a frequent contributor to LapidaryJournal Jewelry Artist since 1995. The mostly metal ephemeraof a steampunk aesthetic includesuch things as gears, cogs, washers, screws, watch parts, keys and locks, wire, and chain. Steampunk canhave touches of opulence withstone or crystal (glass) accents, andoften reveals a spirit of fantasy withwings and hearts, sea creaturesand mystical symbols distinctive insteampunk art.To create steampunk style withsimple wire techniques, I chooseelements with holes and spacesthat allow me to thread and wrapwire as a form of connection. DriggsSkillsn basic fabricationn designTIME IT TOOKn 1-6 hours, dependingon complexity, pluscuring time (overnight)Opening Photo: Jim Lawson; Project Photos: BY THE ARTISTPlaying at the bench after an oh-so-serioussummer, I was experimenting with differentbrands of resin, various printed papers, andsome trendy, funky old, and newly old steampunkparts. I decided to mix up motifs and media, andcut loose for a bit to create this necklace design.Sometimes, I have to let my hair down and let my innergirly-girl take over the studio.I’ve noticed this kind of fashion jewelry all overthe runways and in department stores. I call the resindisks stations because they are joining points along thechain, which also unifies the design. Have some fun andmake something to match a blouse or dress you own.Use whatever paper or fabric tickles your fancy – justremember, eventually you’ll have to drill through it andthe resulting stations are two-sided.There are several new or newish brands of resin onthe market, and I played with two for this necklace. Both have the advantage of quick, crystal-clear curing, and I liked them equally. You can use whatever brandyou can get your hands on.Originally published in Lapidary Journal jewelry artist, december 2010 F W Media, Inc. All rights reserved. What is steampunk design: 3 FREE STEAMPUNK PROJECTSDEMONSTRATING HOW TO MAKE STEAMPUNK JEWELRYan easier wayEarringsOne faster way to experiment with thistechnique is to make earrings instead of anecklace. Then you only need to make tworesin stations. Before curing, either drillsmall holes in them, or use small-diametertubing, as in the project. Suspend thosedisks from ear wires and throw some beadsin the mix for a funky pair of earrings.Commercial chainIf you do want to make the necklace, don’tfabricate the chain yourself, just purchasesome commercial chain at your local beadstore, or cut up an old necklace you don’twear anymore.54Photo 4 Cut several 1" disks from textured or patternedbrass sheet. What is steampunk design: 3 FREE STEAMPUNK PROJECTSDEMONSTRATING HOW TO MAKE STEAMPUNK JEWELRYBy way of magic, curses, or even the obsession of arogue doctor affected by madness, the human imagination has for centuries concocted spectacular hybridentities. Myths and modern science fiction alike portray such creatures: think what fun it would be to create apiece of jewelry that has such multiple lives of its own.In designing this bracelet, I fused elements into something that suggests part fish, part insect, and perhapspart mechanism: the point is, it’s so unusual, it’s hard to say exactly what it is. That’s why I call it the chimerabracelet, borrowing the term the ancient Greeks used for one of their fantastical hybrid creatures.I’ve used Argentium Sterling Silver, but you can use traditional sterling just the same. For the stones, mychoice was citron and bloodstone for a green theme, plus citrine and peridot.Photo 1 Grind a piece ofcitron to about 1" ¾". Sincethis is a silica-based material, Iuse a 100 grit turbine wheel ona Genie to remove the excessquickly.Photo 2 With the stoneroughed out, I’ve capitalized onthat spider web pattern to giveit some interesting detail. Andthat goes with any material,as sometimes you might alteryour design to accommodatesomething unique within thestone. A square might becomean oval if it looks better — trustyour instincts.Photo 3 When you get to the600 grit, use a paint pen to indicate where you’ve eliminatedthe previous grinding marks —don’t use a Sharpie, as the inkmay penetrate the stone anddiscolor it. But if you do makethis mistake, don’t panic, a littleacetone cleans it up.1234Photo 4 The finished stone, taken to 100,000 polish. What is steampunk design: 3 FREE STEAMPUNK PROJECTSDEMONSTRATING HOW TO MAKE STEAMPUNK JEWELRYan easier way I cored out a 6mm section from the citron cab in order to seat a5mm bezel-set peridot. If you don’t like the bezel, you can seat a6mm or 7mm stone directly with glue. Either way works. If you do a lot of metalwork, it’s a good idea to invest in a bandsaw — Lowe’s sells the Skil unit I used for about 120, and it isfiendishly useful. I cut the 6" x 1⅛" base by clamping a piece ofscrap metal to the saw table, creating a stop. Measure the silversheet manually, line it up with the laser guide, and then push. It’sthat simple.Photo 5 And now the experiment begins(donning my favorite lab coat!). For the basicmetal layout, I’ve sliced the 4" x 1" piece of 18gasilver in half. These I’ve cut into fins and scoredwhere I’ll be setting the spines. I’ve also halvedthat 1’ piece of 6ga half round wire and filed itinto a bone-like pattern.5678Photo 6 Using the engraving bur, pattern the fineverywhere except at the border, where it is markedwith the Sharpie.Photo 7 After drilling some holes for detail, setan appropriate length of 14ga half round to createa spine, like those on a rock fish. Although thiscenter spine is straight, the others should be bent toconform to the contours of the fin.Photo 8 To complete the fins, set a piece ofscrap leather into the doming block and workwith a hammer. The leather prevents the piecefrom marring; otherwise the spines will flattenout. Always do this with previously detailedpieces.citron chimera cuff by roger halas F W Media, Inc. All rights reserved. What is steampunk design: 3 FREE STEAMPUNK PROJECTSDEMONSTRATING HOW TO MAKE STEAMPUNK JEWELRYYou can flux, solder, and unclench those white knuckles onceyou see firsthand that this crazy technique actually works.Photo 9 Cut the 6" x 1⅛" base on the bandsaw or by hand. With the saw, clamp a piece ofscrap metal to the saw table, creating a stop.Measure the silver sheet manually, line it upwith the laser guide, and then push. Or saw itwith the jeweler’s saw.Photo 10 Bladesmiths call this processskeletonizing, which you see on a lot of knifehandles. Here, this technique adds details thataccentuate the framework of our creation. Justmeasure where you want the holes, whereverthey’re needed, and drill.Photo 11 I’ve added a couple of 18ga tabs tofuse on some tube settings later. Also, it doesn’thurt to engrave the base more, to give it a scalelike texture —remember, we want this piece tolive and breathe.Photo 12 Who loves weird science? Uhhh, Ido! For soldering small details like these veinsmade from 14ga half round, we all know thatflux always pops, bubbles, and shifts components into undesirable positions. And superglue doesn’t help much, either. Blast the laws ofthermodynamics! Begone, evil forces of nature! The solution is jewelry investment, mixed intoa paste and caked over the delicate components. You can flux, solder, and unclench thosewhite knuckles once you see firsthand that thiscrazy technique actually works. When you’redone, rinse off the investment, pickle, and bendthe piece around a mandrel or anvil. Now it’slooking like a bracelet.9101112cut safelyIf you are going to cut yourown citron cabochon, or cutany gemstone, be sure to worksafely. Always run lapidary units wet,or with a wetting agent. To make themmore interesting, scallop the edges, skeletonize and texture them with an engraving bur.Soldering the center mount to the braceletshouldn’t be that difficult, but the next stage is.Since the mounting is somewhat roundedat the edges, contour the fins to create a flushjoint. Then mix some investment and build itup under each fin to elevate it to the appropriate height. This is very tricky, so take your timeand be precise.15Photo 14 One by one, attach the other settingsto the bracelet. This includes all the tube settingsfor the faceted stones. For those tube settings, use the stone setting burs to create seats for eachstone — about ½ mm above their girdles.Photo 15 Set all the stones with a bezel pusher.Once this is done, as with any piece, a preliminarybuffing gives you an idea of what you’re dealingwith. Then you can work on refining it. The radialbristle brushes by 3M are excellent for this. Finishwith rouge to effect that brilliant shine.
