He envisioned a 24hour team relay event that couldraise more money to fight cancer. Over the next few months,he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event, known as the City ofDestiny Classic 24-Hour RunAgainst Cancer. In 1986, with the help ofPat Flynn – now known as the“Mother of Relay” – 19 teamstook part in the first team Relayevent on the track at the historic Stadium Bowl and raised 33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and inthe tents that dotted the infield. This same effort will occurin the Bradenton area at two locations: on March 31, 2012, atLakewood Ranch and on April22, 2012, at G. It’s all of the above.I’m certainly not the only one tolearn this -- all those that I see and interact with daily echo the same message. They just “plain” like living here. When I get up in the morning andsee all the wildlife that is so plentifulin our area, watch the ever so subtleseasonal changes and now look forwardto a bit cooler weather, I almost rejoicethat we have been so lucky to locate thisbeautiful part of the country. We looked a long time before wefound this place -- almost trying outother areas to see if they fit the bill, butthey failed to capture what this community has to offer.Sure we may have to drive a bit toget to the beach, more upscale shopping,a finer restaurant or to get those servicesnot right here - but, believe me, it istruly worth it for what we DO HAVE.Hugh E. McGuire, Jr.I have lived in Parrish most of my life and have found Parrish to be a givingcommunity. Even in these tough economic times, area residents rally to assist individuals and families living through rough circumstances. But in addition to individuals and families, there are a number of not for profit organizations either basedin Parrish or serving residents of the Parrish area that have seen the funds they sodesperately need disappear, and many are struggling just to keep their doors open. These organizations provide a wide range of services from helping handicappedchildren and adults gain confidence by riding horses, to taking care of abandonedanimals, to helping children learn to enjoy reading by paying for instructors forsummer reading programs, and there are many more. The Parrish Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 corporation that was established in 2009with the initial goal of getting a Branch of the Manatee County YMCA establishedin Parrish. Through a partnership with Manatee County government and the Y,we have been able to accomplish this and the Old School House in Parrish is nowserves as the Parrish Branch of the Manatee County YMCA as well as a Community Center for residents. Three months ago, the Foundation’s Board decided that itwas time to move on to a new project and we established a Grant Fund that wouldaward money to the many charitable groups serving Parrish area residents. We havelaunched a fundraising campaign that will include an opportunity for local businesses as well as residents to participate. To that end, we pleased that the ParrishCivic Association is planning an annual Parrish Festival that will provide a fun timefor individuals and families as well as raise money to fund our Grant Program. The first event will be held on Saturday March 10, 2012, at the Florida RailroadMuseum immediately after the Heritage Day parade. It will feature live entertainment, a petting zoo and games for the kids, and the best of all a Chili Cook Off featuring local teams vying for the coveted “Best Chili in Parrish” award. More detailsof the event will be coming, but I am telling you this now because we need sponsors for the event and we need teams to enter the Cook Off competition. Whetheryou are part of a business, a neighborhood organization, or you just think you knowhow to cook good chili, please consider entering a team. For more information, check out www.parrishchili.com.
