50 YearsGeorge Miller, Ph.D.EnglishIn August 1969 at age 26 , I arrived in Newark, Ph.D. in hand, with two children. We rented half of the GeorgeEvans House (at the corner of Main St. and South College) for 110 a month, all utilities included. As an Assistant Professor in the English Department, I taught the regular load of 3-3. My first office was in the dining roomof a house on South College Avenue. Classes were either MWF or TRS. The English department had no adjunctfaculty, only full-time positions. Undergraduate enrollment was about 6,500, although like most colleges anduniversities at the time, Delaware had seen campus protests over the Vietnam War. Following the assassination ofRev. King, the National Guard had occupied Wilmington for nine months. Hired as a specialist in Renaissanceliterature, I spent half of my years here as a Department administrator serving under a variety of titles includingDirector of Composition, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of the Writing Program, Associate Chair(3 times), and Chair of the Department. Of my eight children, five graduated from UD; three have Master’s fromhere, the other three took advantage of the tuition exchange to earn degrees from smaller liberal arts colleges.6

dedi50 YearsBarbara H. Settles, Ph.D.Human Development and Family SciencesMy past year at the University of Delaware has been challenging and interesting as I put up all my courses andsurvived the Zoom and Canvas challenges. The students were responsive and many of them were able to graduateor move forward toward graduation. My professional participation was also by Zoom and I presented a plenarypresentation and joint paper for the Groves Conference on Marriage and Family. Our honorary Kappa OmicronNu sponsored the initiation on Zoom from national headquarters. Also I have students doing research in NewZealand and the Virgin islands, as well as, locally. My writing has picked up some steam and I look forward to thereturn to campus.inspcomencourinnoVALFood Science and NutritionCarolyn Thoroughgood joined UD in 1968 as an Assistant Professor in Food Science and Nutrition. As herresearch became focused on the nutritional needs of bivalves grown in controlled environment systems, she movedto the newly formed College of Marine Studies in 1974. She progressed through the academic ranks and servedin many administrative roles, including her service as the College’s Dean for 20 years. In September, 2004, Dr.Thoroughgood was recruited to become the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies; however, she alwayspromised herself she was going to return to a full-time faculty position and did so in Spring, 2010. Once back onthe faculty, she specifically asked to teach freshmen and non-science undergraduates about the ocean, although shestill advises graduate students in the School of Marine Science and Policy. Her research and service are now focusedon coastal ocean observation. For 16 years, she has served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the externallyfunded, UD-based Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System, covering the region fromCape Cod, MA, to Cape Hatteras, NC, for the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System.comta lansucceRespIns

50 YearsLawrence Duggan, Ph.D.HistoryIn 1970, as I was finishing my dissertation in history at Harvard, I was lucky enough to be offered a job at theUniversity of Delaware, and then blessed to gain tenure in 1977, and I’ve been here since then—51 years ofgrateful service since then. Besides teaching Renaissance and Reformation history and Western Civ I (what I washired to do), I’ve been able to study, teach, and write on what has interested me as an historian. And between1991 and 2011 my wife and I were also able to coach ten students in winning Rhodes, Marshall, and MitchellScholarships to universities in the British Isles. I don’t think my life could’ve been much better!Charles R. Link, Ph.D.EconomicsMy wonderful ride at UD began on September 1, 1970, when my wife, Mimi, and our one-month olddaughter Marianne, arrived in Newark; our family grew to four with the arrival of Katy in 1973. I havewitnessed the phenomenal growth at UD as well as in the Economics Department, which has grown froma faculty of 10 to 25, along with the development of an outstanding Economics Ph.D. program in the early1990s. Along the way, there have been 52 articles (and still counting) in respected economics journals, twomonographs, 55 presentations at national and international economics association meetings, and grants ofmore than 1 million. I have always enjoyed interacting with students at all levels. I have taught more than25,000 students and have been the major advisor on 16 Ph.D. dissertations, more than 50 Masters theses, and 14 undergraduate degrees with distinction theses. I developed Winter Session programs in Europe (10years) and Australia/New Zealand (5 years). Teaching awards along the way have been from the Department of Economics, the College of Business and Economics, and finally, the teaching award from the University of Delaware. I have been fortunate to have worked with great colleagues. Most of all, none of thiswould have been possible without the support of Mimi, my wife of 55 years. By the time I retire in 2024, Iwill have been the Bank of America Professor of Business for 22 years.8

dedi50 YearsDaniel Rich, Ph.D.Biden School of Public Policy & AdministrationIn 1970, I came to UD because I thought it offered opportunities. Fifty years later, it is clear that I was right! Istarted as an instructor in the Department of Political Science, still working on my Ph.D. I eventually climbedthe academic ladder to a named professorship. I have had numerous leadership opportunities. In 1976, theCollege of Urban Affairs and Public Policy was established, the precursor of the Biden School of Public Policyand Administration. I served as associate dean and dean. When UD reorganized in 1997, I became dean of theCollege of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, an experience that focused my efforts on strengtheningeducation at all levels. I then served as University provost from 2001-2009, a period during which UD completedits transformation to one of the nation’s leading public research universities. When I returned to the faculty, Irenewed my commitment to teaching and research, and especially to mentoring students. My work on communitypartnerships was enhanced when I became director of the Community Engagement Initiative in 2016. For50 years, I have been privileged to work with thousands of extraordinary individuals—students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni—all dedicated to strengthening UD. Throughout that time, I have been a Blue Hen in myheart and in my head. On May 31, 2021, the University awarded me an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Now Iam a “true blue” Blue Hen!inspcomencourinnoVALcomta lansucceRespIns
