Page 1YOLE DEVELOPPEMENTFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:Neuromorphic: a step towards AI1?Extracted from: Neuromorphic Sensing & Computing report, YoleDéveloppement, 2019As well as: Hardware and Software for AI – Consumer focus report and ArtificialIntelligence Computing for Automotive report from Yole DéveloppementLYON, France – October 1st, 2019: Today, the neuromorphicapproach still occupies the ‘‘curio cabinet”. “Many are prophesying theadvent of neuromorphic approaches in the same way deep learningtechniques were wrongfully dismissed – until they ended up reigning”,explains Pierre Cambou, Principal Analyst, Imaging at YoleDéveloppement (Yole). And he adds: “Many similarities point to theidea that such a paradigm shift could happen quickly.”Several years ago, the biggestobstacle preventing the DNN2approach from performing itsbest was the lack of suitablehardware to support DNN’sinnovative software advances.Today, the same is true forneuromorphic technology –but as the first SNN3 chips rollout, the first beachheadmarkets are ready to fuelgrowth. The initial marketsare industrial and mobile, mainly for robotic revolutionand real-time perception. Within the next decade, the availability ofhybrid in-memory computing chips should unlock the automotivemarket, which is desperate for a mass-market AD4 technology.Neuromorphic sensing and computing could be the magic bullet forthese markets, solving most of AI’s current issues while opening newperspectives in the decades to come Yole explores today the computing and deep learning world with animaging focus. The new report, Neuromorphic Sensing & Computingdelivers an in-depth understanding of the neuromorphic landscape withkey technology trends, competitive landscape, market dynamics andsegmentation per application. It presents key technical insights andanalysis regarding future technology trends and challenges. YOLE DEVELOPPEMENTPage 2analysis is at the cross road of two industries covered by Yole’sanalysts: imaging and software & computing. How will this industry evolve? Who are the companies to watch? Whatis the status of their development? Yole proposes you today anoverview of the neuromorphic sensing ecosystem.Since 2012, deep learning techniques have proven their superiority inthe AI space. These techniques have spurred a giant leap inperformance, and have been widely adopted by the industry.“Recently, we have witnessed a race for development of new chipsspecialized for deep-learning training and inference, either for highperformance computing, servers, or edge applications”, asserts YohannTschudi, Technology & Market Analyst, Computing &Software at Yole. “These chips use the existing semiconductor paradigmbased on Moore’s Law. And while it is technically possible to manufacturechips capable of performing hundreds of Tops 5 to serve today’s AIapplication space, the desired computing power is still well belowexpectations.”Consequently, an arms race is ongoing, centering on the use of ‘’bruteforce computing” to address computing power requirements. Thetechnology node currently used is already at 7nm, and full wafer chipshave emerged. Room for improvement appears small, and relyingsolely on the Moore’s Law paradigm is creating several uncertainties.Currentdeep-learningtechniques and associatedhardware face three mainhurdles: first, the economicsof Moore’s Law make it verydifficult for a start-up tocompete in the AI space andthereforeislimitingcompetition. Second, dataoverflow makes currentmemorytechnologiesalimiting factor. And third, theexponentialincreaseincomputingpowerrequirements has created a“heat wall” for each application. Meanwhile, the market is demandingmore performance for real-time speech recognition and translation,real-time video understanding, and real-time perception for robots andcars, and there are hundreds of other applications asking for moreintelligence that combines sensing and computing.5Tops : Tera operations per second2

YOLE DEVELOPPEMENTPage 3Given these significant hurdles, the time is ripe for disruption: a newtechnology paradigm in which start-ups can differentiate themselves, and which could utilize the benefits derived from emerging memorytechnologies and drastically improve data, bandwidth, and powerefficiencies. Many foresee this new paradigm to be the neuromorphicapproach, some would call it the event-based approach wherecomputation happens only if needed instead of being done at eachclock step. This method allows a tremendous energy saving essentialto run these greedy and intensive AI algorithms. This is the probablenext step in AI technology.Neuromorphic Sensing & Computing report from Yole represents awindow into a possible future where AI uses neuromorphicapproaches for sensing and computing. A detailed description of thisreport and other computing & software reports is available on iMicronews.com.3
