MRICDVisitor’s GuideEdgewood Area - Aberdeen Proving Groundwelcome to theU.S. Army Medical ResearchInstitute of Chemical DefenseThe U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense(USAMRICD) is the Nation’s Center of Excellence for the discoveryand development of medical products and knowledge solutionsagainst chemical and biochemical threats through research,education and training, and consultation. We conduct not only basicand applied research on chemical warfare (CW) threat agents, toxicindustrial chemicals (TIC), toxic industrial materials (TIMS), andtoxins of biological origin to develop pretreatment, prophylaxis, andtreatment compounds, but also advanced development studies onproposed medical countermeasures. Additionally, the USAMRICD’sresearch efforts establish a scientific and technical base from whichto plan and formulate enhanced medical countermeasures. Our staffof subject matter experts provides consultation in medical chemicaldefense, and educates and trains first responders and medicalprofessionals in the management of chemical casualties. We alsoprovide the capability of characterizing therapeutic compounds forthe entire chemical and biological defense program.APGEDGEWOOD AREAAberdeen Proving GroundAberdeen Proving Ground (APG) is the Army’s oldest active proving groundand was established on October 20, 1917, six months after the United Statesentered World War I. It remains one of the Army’s most active and diversifiedinstallations. Situated at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and bordered bythe Susquehanna and Gunpowder Rivers, APG is surrounded by some of thebest natural resources that Maryland has to offer. Located along the I-95corridor, APG is approximately 74 miles driving distance to Philadelphia, 71miles to Washington, D.C. and 32 miles to Baltimore.
