May be susceptible to stainingfrom harsh disinfectants, cleaning agents, dyes or other harsh chemicals – ensure allchemicals and materials that may comein contact with stair treads, risers orstringers will not stain, mar or otherwisedamage the material prior to use.3. SUBSTRATE PREPARATIONAll substrates must be prepared accordingto ASTM F710, as well as applicable ACIand RFCI guidelines. Substrates mustclean, smooth, permanently dry, flat, andstructurally sound. Substrates must befree of visible water or moisture, dust, sealers, paint, sweeping compounds, curing compounds, residual adhesivesandadhesiveremovers, concretehardeners or densifiers, solvents, wax, oil, grease, asphalt, visible alkaline saltsor excessive efflorescence, mold, mildewand any other extraneous coating, film, material or foreign matter. All substrates must have any and all existingadhesives, materials, contaminants orbond-breakers mechanically removed viascraping, sanding or grinding. Mechanicalpreparation must expose at least 90%of the original substrate. Followingcleaning and removal, all substratesmust be vacuumed with a flat vacuumattachment or damp mopped with clean, potable water to remove all surface dust.Sweeping without vacuuming or dampmopping will not be acceptable. All porous substrates must be tested perASTM F3191 to confirm porosity. Use apipette or equivalent to conduct threetests by placing a .05 mL (1/4” wide)droplet of clean, potable water onto thesurface. If the substrate absorbs waterwithin 60 seconds, the substrate isconsidered porous. Conduct 3 tests forthe first 3000 sq. ft. and one for eachadditional 2000 sq. ft., at least one perroom. All other substrates that do notmeet this requirement are considerednon-porous. Ensure that all non-poroussubstrates are not contaminated with anyaforementioned contaminates. It is recommended that all substrateshave a floor flatness of FF32 and/or aflatness tolerance of 1/8” in 6’ or 3/16”08.14.2017 Page 5R U B B E R S TA I R T R E A D S , R I S E R S & S T R I N G E R Sin 10’. Substrates that do not meet thisrequirement should have a compatiblecementitious patch (such as the ExcelsiorCP-300) or self-leveling underlayment(such as the Excelsior SU-310) installed toflatten the installation area.Do not use solvent/citrus based adhesiveremovers prior to installation. FollowThe Resilient Floor Covering Institute’s(RFCI) “Recommended Work Practice forRemoval of Existing Floor Covering andAdhesive”, and all applicable local, state, federal and industry regulations andguidelines. When removing asbestos andasbestos containing materials, follow allapplicable OSHA standards.CONCRETE SUBSTRATESAll concrete must have a minimumcompressive strength of 3500 PSI andbe prepared in accordance with ASTMF710. When flooring is being installeddirectly over concrete, concrete surfacesthat have an ICRI Concrete Surface Profile(CSP) over 4 should be flattened with aself-leveling underlayment or a patch toprevent imperfections from telegraphingthrough flooring materials. On or belowgrade concrete must have a permanent, effective moisture vapor retarder installedbelow the slab.Adhesive RH LimitsAW-510 Acrylic Wet-Set: 90% RHTP-620 Tape Adhesive: 80% RHC-630 Contact Adhesive: 85% RHMS-700 Modified Silane: 95% RHEW-710 Epoxy Wet-Set: 90% RHNew or existing concrete substrates on allgrade levels must be tested in accordancewith ASTM F2170, using in situ Probes, toquantitatively determine the amount ofrelative humidity no more than one weekprior to the installation. If ASTM F2170 test results exceed theprescribed limits, a moisture mitigationproduct, such as Excelsior MM-100Moisture Mitigation, must be installedprior to proceeding with installation.Install The MM-100 per technical datasheet at a rate of 400 sq. ft. per gallon. When installing over concrete as moisturemitigation, material must be applied intwo coats. Do not install flooring untilmoisture testing has been conducted perthe appropriate standard and/or moisturemitigation has been installed and is dry tothe touch. Do not install flooring in belowgrade areas when hydrostatic pressure isvisible or suspected.RESINOUS SUBSTRATESWhen installing directly over a resinousproducts, such as the Excelsior MM100 or an epoxy coating, ensure thatcoating is dry to the touch and hascured for the prescribed length of time.Substrate must be clean, dry, sound andfree of contaminates. Ensure to followinstallation procedures and trowel sizesfor non-porous substrates.GYPSUM BASED SUBSTRATESGypsum-based substrates must have aminimum compressive strength of 3500PSI. Gypsum substrates that do not meetthis requirement must have one coatof the Excelsior MM-100 or equivalentinstalled to improve the tensile/pull-offstrength of the substrate. Substrate mustbe structurally sound and firmly bondedto subfloor. Any cracked or fracturedareas must be removed and repairedwith a compatible patch or repair product.Follow instructions for installation overa gypsum substrate. New or existinggypsum substrates may require a sealantor primer. Follow all manufacturer’srecommendations regarding preparationfor resilient flooring installation.WOOD SUBSTRATESWood substrates must be constructed perfederal, state and/or local building codes.Wood substrates should have a minimumthickness of 1”. If plywood is being used, ensure plywood is Underlayment Gradewith a minimum thickness of 1/4” andis fully sanded prior to installation. Whenstairs may be subjected to moisture, usean APA approved exterior grade plywood.Other wood materials, such as OSB,lauan, particleboard, chipboard, fiberboardor cementitious tile backer boards, are not acceptable substrates. Avoidpreservative-treated and fire-retardantplywood, as some may be manufacturedwith resins or adhesives that may causediscoloration or staining of materials. As such, do not use plastic orresin filler to patch cracks. Do not usecement or rosin coated nails and staplesor solvent-based construction adhesivesto adhere the plywood. Do not install ona sleeper system (wood subfloor systemover concrete) or directly over Sturd-IFloor panels.METAL SUBSTRATESMetal substrates must be thoroughlysanded/ground and cleaned of anyresidue, oil, rust and/or oxidation.Substrate must be smooth, flat andsound prior to installation. When installingin areas that may be subject to topicalwater or moisture and/or high humidity,an anti-corrosive coating must be appliedto protect metal substrate. Contact alocal paint or coating supplier for coatingrecommendations. Install stair treadswithin 12 hours after sanding/grinding toprevent re-oxidation. Any deflection inthe metal floor can cause a bond failurebetween the adhesive and the metalsubstrate. Be sure to follow installationprocedures and trowel sizes for nonporous substrates.EXISTING FLOORING SUBSTRATESThe suitability of existing flooring asa substrate depends on the specificrequirements of the adhesive beingused to install the material. As such, refer to the adhesive requirements forexisting flooring substrates and ensure alladhesive requirements and guidelines arefollowed.4. CRACKS, JOINTS & VOIDSAll cracks, joints and voids, as well asthe areas surrounding them, must beclean and free of dust, dirt, debris andcontaminants. All minor cracks and voids3/64” wide or less may be repaired witha suitable cementitious patch, such as theExcelsior CP-300, or an epoxy filler, such08.14.2017 Page 6R U B B E R S TA I R T R E A D S , R I S E R S & S T R I N G E R Sas the Excelsior EN-610.Due to the dynamic nature of concrete, manufacturercannotwarrantyinstallations to cover cracks or other voids(such as control cuts, saw joints andmoving cracks or voids) wider than 3/64”.Do not install flooring directly over anycrack wider than 3/64”.To treat through cracks (depth at least75% of the thickness of the concrete),chase joint or crack with a suitable saw orgrinder and open to a minimum width of¼”. Be sure to clean all dust, dirt and debrisfrom crack. Joints and cracks should thenbe sealed with a suitable, elastomericcaulk (such as Ardex Ardiseal Rapid Plus,Mapei P1 SL or equivalent) designed foruse in expansion joints. Install a closedcell backer rod at prescribed depth andfollow caulk manufacturer’s instructionsfor installation. Ensure surface is troweledflush with surface of concrete. To treat other cracks and voids (such ascontrol cuts, saw-cut joints and surfacecracks) over 3/64”, chase joint or void witha suitable saw or grinder and clean alldust, dirt and debris from crack. Fill entirecrack with a rigid crack filler (such asArdex Ardifix, CMP CM10 or equivalent)designed for use in control or saw-cutcuts. Follow material manufacturer’sinstructions for installation. Ensuresurface is troweled flush with surface ofconcrete.Review all manufacturer installationinstructionsand/orconsultmanufacturer technical staff for allcrack or joint filling products prior totreating joints and cracks.5. STRINGER INSTALLATIONPrior to the installation of stair treads andrisers, any specified Flexco Stringer orequivalent must be installed (the inclusionof Flexco Stringers is optional). Ensurestringer material has been properlyacclimated and that ambient conditionsare within normal operational ranges.Ensure all stringer materials have beencleaned with a clean, damp cloth anddenatured alcohol or equivalent solventbased product prior to installation.Stringer substrates must be smooth, flat, flush, full and complete for the entirestairwell, in order to provide completedand adequate support for the stringermaterial. Ensure any minor gaps betweensteps and stringer substrate are free ofany dirt, dust and debris. Ensure substrateis suitably repaired and/or preparedprior to installation, as manufacturer isnot responsible for substrates that areinadequate or have not been properlyprepared.Ensure adhesive is approved for usewith stringer material and that propertrowel or applicator type and size is used,as manufacturer is not responsible forany and all adhesion issues related toimproper adhesive selection or usage.Stringers are designed to be scribed andtrimmed on-site by freehand trimming orusing a pattern scribing method. Freehandtrimming is extremely difficult and shouldonly be attempted by experiencedinstallation technicians.PATTERN SCRIBE METHODPrior to stringer installation, determine theheight of the stringer from the top edgeof the top and bottom steps. Mark heighton stringer substrate and create a chalkline from the top step to the bottom step, ensuring bottom chalk line meets the topof the wall base along the bottom wall.Use a light color chalk to avoid stainingsubstrate.Using builders felt or equivalent, roughcut a template using the height, width andlength of steps. Ensure that the top edgeof the template is a factory edge to mimicstraight edge of stringer material. Usingpreviously created chalk line, tape the topedge of the template to the top edge ofthe stringer substrate. Rough cut templatematerial within 1/2" of step, riser and stepnose. Cut several triangular holes in thecenter of the template and tape templateto stringer substrate to hold in placewhile trimming. Template should be flat, flush and must not contain any creasesor ripples to ensure that final template isaccurate. Carefully trim template to matchstep, riser and step nose.Place the stringer template over thestringer material and mark cut lines usingsuitable marker. Be sure to followinstructions based on substrate porosity(porous or non-porous). Replace trowelsand/or applicators at recommendedintervals to maintain proper trowel ridgeand spread rate. When installing intoadhesive using a wet-set method, avoiddisrupting material until adhesive hascured for light foot traffic.Carefully position stringer to ensure thatstringer material is flush with steps. Rollmaterial with a hand roller or equivalentwithin 30 minutes of installation, crossingin a perpendicular direction after initial roll.Visually inspect installation to ensure thatmaterial has not shifted and that adhesivehas not been squeezed out of joints orcompressed onto surface.6. STAIRTREAD&PREPARATIONRISERPrior to trimming and installation, confirmmaterial installation pattern per designspecifications or work order, especiallywhen installing profiled treads or buttingtreads. If patterns need to be centered oraligned, ensure that stair treads are longenough to allow for trimming on eitherside of tread.Inspect all stair treads and risers priorto trimming or installation to verify thatthere are no visible defects, damagesor excessive shading variations. Someproducts, colors and textures have latentand acceptable color and shade variations. If there are concerns regarding shadeor color variation, do not install materialand consult sales representative andmanufacturer’s technical staff.Due to natural variances in stairwellsand steps, all Distinct Designs stair treadand riser installations are intended to bescribed and trimmed on-site to conformto each step, using one of the followingscribing methods. Prior to trimming andinstallation, ensure stair tread nose fitsthe substrate, especially when installinground nose treads or square nose treadsthat are not adjustable, as nosing may notconform to steps that are not designedfor the specific stair tread in use. Do not08.14.2017 Page 7R U B B E R S TA I R T R E A D S , R I S E R S & S T R I N G E R Sinstall stair treads that do not conform tothe substrate or alter the interior stair treadnose to conform to steps, as this couldresult in premature wear and damage,as well as void any and all expressed orimplied warranty.Prior to trimming stair treads and risers, ensure that specified stringer materialsare installed and that adhesive has curedfor light foot traffic to avoid stringeradhesion issues. When scribing stairtreads and risers, start from the bottomof the stairwell to ensure that stair treadsand risers are properly trimmed. Be sureto protect stringer materials from sharpedges, such as a sharp edge of a divider, during stair tread and riser trimming andinstallation.THREE SIDE SCRIBE METHODDetermine the center of the stairwell andmark a center line on the riser portion ofeach step. Determine the center of eachstair tread and mark a center line on theback edge of the tread for alignmentduring trimming and installation. Whennecessary, rough cut stair treads to within1/2" - 2" of step dimensions to makescribing and trimming easier.Align the stair tread to the right side ofthe step and set divider to the distancebetween the center mark on the stepriser and the center mark on the stairtread. While applying firm pressure to thestringer material with divider, mark thestair tread with the divider to determinescribe line. If using a One-Piece Tread &Riser, scribe the riser portion of the treadas well. Use a suitable knife to trim stairtread along scribe mark and create a slightundercut to ease final installation.Once the right side of the tread is scribedand trimmed, reposition the stair tread toalign to the left side of the step.
