A wrench or a key leftattached to a rotating part of the power tool may resultin personal injury.15. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing andbalance at all times. This enables better control ofthe power tool in unexpected situations.16. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing orjewellery. Keep your hair, clothing, and glovesaway from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery orlong hair can be caught in moving parts.17. If devices are provided for the connection of dustextraction and collection facilities, ensure theseare connected and properly used. Use of dustcollection can reduce dust-related hazards.Power tool use and care18. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct powertool for your application. The correct power tool willdo the job better and safer at the rate for which it wasdesigned.19. Do not use the power tool if the switch does notturn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot becontrolled with the switch is dangerous and must berepaired.20. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/orthe battery pack from the power tool beforemaking any adjustments, changing accessories,or storing power tools. Such preventive safetymeasures reduce the risk of starting the power toolaccidentally.21. Store idle power tools out of the reach of childrenand do not allow persons unfamiliar with thepower tool or these instructions to operate thepower tool. Power tools are dangerous in the handsof untrained users.22. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment orbinding of moving parts, breakage of parts andany other condition that may affect the powertool’s operation. If damaged, have the power toolrepaired before use. Many accidents are caused bypoorly maintained power tools.23. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properlymaintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges areless likely to bind and are easier to control.24. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc.in accordance with these instructions, taking intoaccount the working conditions and the work tobe performed. Use of the power tool for operationsdifferent from those intended could result in ahazardous situation.Service25. Have your power tool serviced by a qualifiedrepair person using only identical replacementparts. This will ensure that the safety of the power toolis maintained.26. Exposure to noise can causehearing loss.2. Use auxiliary handle(s), if supplied with the tool.Loss of control can cause personal injury.3. Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces,when performing an operation where the cuttingaccessory may contact hidden wiring or its owncord. Cutting accessory contacting a “live” wire maymake exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” andcould give the operator an electric shock.4. Wear a hard hat (safety helmet), safety glassesand/or face shield. Ordinary eye or sun glassesare NOT safety glasses. It is also highlyrecommended that you wear a dust mask andthickly padded gloves.5. Be sure the bit is secured in place beforeoperation.6. Under normal operation, the tool is designed toproduce vibration. The screws can come looseeasily, causing a breakdown or accident. Checktightness of screws carefully before operation.7. In cold weather or when the tool has not beenused for a long time, let the tool warm up for awhile by operating it under no load. This willloosen up the lubrication. Without proper warmup, hammering operation is difficult.8. Always be sure you have a firm footing.Be sure no one is below when using the tool inhigh locations.9. Hold the tool firmly with both hands.10. Keep hands away from moving parts.11. Do not leave the tool running. Operate the toolonly when hand-held.5

12. Do not point the tool at any one in the area whenoperating. The bit could fly out and injuresomeone seriously.13. Do not touch the bit or parts close to the bitimmediately after operation; they may beextremely hot and could burn your skin.14. Do not operate the tool at no-load unnecessarily.15. Some material contains chemicals which may betoxic. Take caution to prevent dust inhalation andskin contact. The bit without a collar cannot be retained by themethod shown in Fig. 4.To remove the bit, follow the installation procedure inreverse.WARNING:DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product (gainedfrom repeated use) replace strict adherence to safetyrules for the subject product.MISUSE or failure to follow the safety rules stated inthis instruction manual may cause serious personalinjury.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONCAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before adjusting or checking function on thetool.Switch action (Fig. 1)CAUTION: Before plugging in the tool, always check to see thatthe switch lever actuates properly and returns to the“OFF” position when released.To start the tool, simply squeeze the switch lever. Releasethe switch lever to stop.Indicator lamp (Fig. 2)The green power-ON indicator lamp lights up when thetool is plugged to the mains. If the indicator lamp is lit butthe tool does not start even if the tool is switched ON, thecarbon brushes may be worn out, or the motor or theswitch may be defective. If the indicator lamp does notlight up, the mains cord or the indicator lamp may bedefective.ASSEMBLYCAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before carrying out any work on the tool.Installing or removing the bitThis tool accepts bits either with or without a collar on itsshank. (Fig. 3)To install the bit, follow either procedure (1) or (2)described below.(1) For bits with a collar (Fig. 4)Pivot the tool retainer back and slightly downward.Insert the bit into the tool holder as far as it will go. Tosecurely retain the bit, return the tool retainer to itsoriginal position.6(2) For bits without a collar (Fig. 5)Pivot the tool retainer front and slightly downward.With the notched portion of the bit facing the toolretainer shaft, insert the bit into the tool holder as faras it will go. Then pivot the tool retainer furtherdownward toward the barrel to securely retain the bit.OPERATIONChipping/Scaling/DemolitionHold the tool firmly with both hands. Turn the tool on andapply slight pressure on the tool so that the tool will notbounce around, uncontrolled. Pressing very hard on thetool will not increase the efficiency.MAINTENANCECAUTION: Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before attempting to perform inspection ormaintenance. Never use gasoline, benzine, thinner, alcohol or thelike. Discoloration, deformation or cracks may result.Replacing carbon brushesWhen the resin insulating tip inside the carbon brush isexposed to contact the commutator, it will automaticallyshut off the motor. When this occurs, both carbon brushesshould be replaced. Keep the carbon brushes clean andfree to slip in the holders. Both carbon brushes should bereplaced at the same time. Use only identical carbonbrushes. (Fig. 6)Use a hex wrench to remove the motor housing cover.(Fig. 7)Remove the cap rubber. (Fig. 8)Use a screwdriver to remove the brush holder caps. Takeout the worn carbon brushes, insert the new ones andsecure the brush holder caps. (Fig. 9)LubricationThis tool requires no hourly or daily lubrication because ithas a grease-packed lubrication system. It should berelubricated after every 6 months of operation. Send thecomplete tool to Makita Authorized or Factory ServiceCenter for this lubrication service. However, ifcircumstances require that you should lubricate it byyourself, proceed as follows.First, switch off and unplug the tool.Remove the cap using a lock nut wrench 20 or hexwrench 8, then replenish with fresh grease (60 g). Useonly Makita genuine hammer grease (optional accessory).

Filling with more than the specified amount of grease(approx. 60 g) can cause faulty hammering action or toolfailure. Fill only with the specified amount of grease.(Fig. 10, Fig. 11 & Fig. 12)Reinstall the cap and secure with the wrench.To maintain product SAFETY and RELIABILITY, repairs,any other maintenance or adjustment should beperformed by Makita Authorized Service Centers, alwaysusing Makita replacement parts.OPTIONAL ACCESSORIESCAUTION: These accessories or attachments are recommendedfor use with your Makita tool specified in this manual.The use of any other accessories or attachments mightpresent a risk of injury to persons.
