5 minute guide02Introduction to home theaterYou are probably used to using stereo equipment to listen to music, but may not be used to hometheater systems that give you many more options (such as surround sound) when listening tosoundtracks.Home theater refers to the use of multiple audio channels to create a surround sound effect, making you feel like you're in the middle of the action or concert. The surround sound you get from ahome theater system depends not only on the speakers you have set up in your room, but also onthe source and the sound settings of the receiver.DVD-Video has become the basic source material for home theater due to its size, quality, and easeof use. Depending on the DVD, you can have up to seven different audio channels coming from onedisc, all of them being sent to different speakers in your system. This is what creates a surroundsound effect and gives you the feeling of ‘being there’.This receiver will automatically decode Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Surround DVD-Video discs, according to your speaker setup. In most cases, you won’t have to make changes for realisticsurround sound, but other possibilities (like listening to a CD with multichannel surround sound)are explained in Playing sources, starting on page 30.7En

025 minute guideListening to Surround SoundThis receiver was designed with the easiest possible setup in mind, so with the following quicksetup guide, you should have your system hooked up for surround sound in no time at all. In mostcases, you can simply leave the receiver in the default settings.1Hook up your DVD player. For surround sound, you’ll want to hook up using a digital audio connection from the DVD player tothe receiver. You can do this with either a coaxial, or an optical connection (you don’t need to doboth). If you hook up using an optical cable, you should refer to Optical digital input setting on page41 to assign the optical input to DVD.Use a video cord to connect the video output on your DVD player to the receiver using the jacksshown below.2Hook up your TV.Use a video cord to connect your receiver to the TV using the jacks as shown below.Optical cableCoaxial cableNote: If you hook upusing a optical cable, see Optical digitalinput settings on page41 to assign theoptical input to DVD.Video cordDIGITAL INOPTASSIGNABLE( DVD/ LD ) DIGITAL OUTDVD/ LDFRONTVIDEO OUTSINDIGITAL IND VIN DANTENNA5.1CHREC INPUTCD-R AM IN/ TAPE LOOPFMIN/ MD UNBAL75 Ω¡ 78S - VIDEOSURROUNDRLSURROUNDL BACKRTV /SATDVD/ LDFRONTIN41(DVD/ LD) CDVCR /DVRINÎ3VIDEOOUTINDVD5.1CHREC INPUTINCD-R/ TAPE/ MDDVD PLAYER0(TV /SAT )OPTThis receiver OPTDVD 7.1CH INPUTCENTER SUB ER(CD)ø(TV /SAT)MONITOROUTTV/IN SATINDVD /IN LDCONTROLRAUDIOLDVD player(CD-R// TAPE/ MD)ø1DIGITAL TSUBWOOFERPREOUTVIDEO INTV8EnVideo cordPREOUT( D V D / LD) IN LLSURROUNDBACKMONITOR OUTYOUTVCR /DVRINPREOUTPLAYIN ASSIGNABLECOMPONENTVIDEOYPB(T V / SAT) IN øPRR SURROUND BACK LRFRONTRSURROUNDCENTERR SURROUND LRFRONTL

Simply connect the speakers you have in the manner shown below. The receiver willwork with just two stereo speakers (the front speakers in the diagram) but using at least threespeakers is recommended, and a complete setup is best.Make sure you connect the speaker on the right to the right terminal and the speaker on the left tothe left terminal. Also make sure the positive and negative ( /–) terminals on the receiver matchthose on the speakers. Use speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 Ω to 16 Ω. If you’re not using a subwoofer, change the front speaker setting (see Speaker setting onpage 37) to large When using the speaker on your TV as the center speaker (C), connect the CENTERPREOUT jack on this unit to the audio input jack on your TV. 03Connecting upConnecting digital componentsThe easiest way to hook up this receiver for surround sound is to use a digital input. You can do thisby either coaxial or optical connections (you do not need to do both). The quality of these two typesof connections is the same but since some digital components only have one type of digitalterminal, it is a matter of matching like with like (for example, the coaxial output from thecomponent to coaxial input on the receiver). The VSX-41 has four digital inputs (two coaxial inputsand two optical inputs). Connect your digital components to the rear panel as shown below. Seepage 17 to connect the front panel optical input. There are two digital output jacks which is marked DIGITAL OUT. If you connect this to the opticalinput on a digital recorder (currently these include MD, DAT and CD-R) you can make direct digitalrecordings with this unit. When connecting your equipment, always make sure the power is turned off and the power cord isdisconnected from the AC wall outlet. The arrows indicate the direction of the audio DIGITAL INCOAXOPTCD recorderOPTASSIGNABLEANTENNADVD 7.1CH INPUTCENTER SUB W.AUXIN(DVD/ LD) CDINS - VIDEOSURROUNDRLVCR /DVRAMLOOPSURROUNDL BACKRFMUNBAL IN75 ΩTV /SATINDVD/ LDFRONTININVIDEOOUTINDVD5.1CHREC INPUTINCD-R/ TAPE/ MDMONITOROUTSUBWOOFER(CD)ø(TV /SAT)MONITOROUTPLAYRAUDIOL(CD-R// TAPE/ MD)ø1DIGITAL OUTTV/IN SATDVD /IN 2( D V D / LD) IN LLSURROUNDBACKMONITOR OUTYOUTVCR /DVRINCONTROLIN RFRONTPBLPRCENTERYPB(T V / SAT) IN øPRR SURROUND BACK LRFRONTRSURROUNDCENTERDIGITALOUTR SURROUND LCOAXRFRONTCD playerLAC OUTLETBDIGITAL OUTCOAXDVD playerIf you have an LD player, you need to make special connections to ensure you can play 2 RFformat LDs on your system. If this is the case, hook up your DVD/LD or LD player directly to anRF demodulator using both the 2 RF output and either a coaxial or optical digital connection. We also recommend hooking up your digital components to analog audio jacks as well. Makesure the RF demodulator digital in switch is set correctly (optical or coaxial depending on theconnection). See the component's instruction manual if you are unsure about its input andoutput jacks.14En

Connecting up03Connecting audio componentsTo begin set up, connect your analog audio components (such as a cassette deck) to the jacks. Forcomponents you want to record with, you need to hook up four plugs to the receiver (a set of stereoinputs and a set of stereo outputs), but for components that only play, you only need to hook up oneset of stereo plugs. You must also hook up your digital components to analog audio jacks if you wantto record to/from digital components (like an MD) to/from analog components. See the previouspage for more on digital connections. When connecting your equipment, always make sure the power is turned off and the power cord isdisconnected from the AC wall outlet. The arrows indicate the direction of the audio signal.OUTPUTDIGITALCD playerRASSIGANTENNADVD 7.1CH INPUTCENTER SUB W.AUXINCDINSURRORAMLOOPTV /SATINREC PLAYLSURROL BARFMUNBAL IN75 ΩCD-R/Tape/MD DeckLVCR /DVRDVD/ LDFRONTININOUTINDVD5.1CHREC INPUTINCD-R/ TAPE/ MDRVIDEOMONIOUTSUBWOOPREOUPLAYINRAUDIOL15En

With digital video components (like aDVD player), you must use one of the connections shown on the next page for the video signal, butin order to hear a digital source (like a DVD) you should hook up the audio to a digital input (seepage 14). It is also a good idea to hook up your digital components with analog audio connections(see page 15).For better quality video, you can hook up using the component video jacks or the S-video jacks(quality descends in this order) on the rear of the receiver instead of the regular video jacks (see thesecond illustration of the following page). Make sure they are connected to the video componentusing the same kind of connection. However, you don’t need to make more than one type of videoconnection. When connecting your equipment, always make sure the power is turned off and the power cord isdisconnected from the AC wall outlet.16En

If you switch on both A and B speaker systems, only the front speakers and the subwooferwill be audible. No sound will come from the center, surround, or surround back speakers, butmultichannel sources will be down-mixed to the active speakers so no sound will be lost. Similarly, ifyou choose just the B system you‘ll only hear the front speakers connected to the B system andmulti channel sources will be down-mixed to these two speakers.Hints on speaker placementSpeakers are usually designed with a particular placement in mind. Some are designed to befloorstanding, while others should be placed on stands to sound their best. Some should be placednear a wall; others should be placed away from walls.
