Deep Blue ExpressDeep BlueExpress is apopular localband, havingbeen presentedby the CliffordRuritanSorghum Festival, the Amherst County Habitat for Humanity “Workingon a Building” Bluegrass series, the Bluegrass Crops and CrittersBluegrass Festival in Rustburg, the and the James River BluegrassAssociation in Madison Heights, among many others. Deep BlueExpress has opened for Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Kody Norris,Larry Stephenson and James King. Fiddle player and founding memberWinkie Doss of Rustburg, also sings harmony on all parts. Over theyears, Winkie has also played bass for the great fiddle player MackMagaha and for Stoney Ridge. Omar Moore, from Appomattox, is leadsinger and guitar player. The band’s Mandolin Player Brad Bryant, alsohas played banjo, bass and guitar for Deep Blue Express when needed.George Thompson is a Nelson County native who retired from theArmed Forces and came home excited to sing harmony and play banjowith the band again. The band’sname comes from“Little Mountain”located in the NelsonCounty area of CentralVirginia known as PineyRiver, where the bandcalls home. They play awide variety of music and original songs in the Country, Bluegrass andGospel music genre. Influenced by the sounds of Flatt & Scruggs, Jim &Jesse, Merle Haggard, Brother Oswald, the list goes on but nothingsounds better than acoustic instruments and amazing harmonyThe average age of the band is, well let’s just say “they know better” andleave it at that. The Little Mountain Boys have played in everyBluegrass: Working on a Building Habitat fundraisers and in numerousfestivals in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, andPennsylvania. The band has opened for performers such as RhondaVincent, Cherryholmes, The Grascals, Seldom Scene, and the SpinneyBrothers. During his 30 yeartenure, he worked at sevenRadio Stations starting out asan on-air Announcer eventuallyworking up to Music Director,Program Director, OperationsManager, and then becomingGeneral Manager for threeRadio Stations until hisretirement. Since retirement,Tony has remained active inpromoting Concerts, Festivals,and currently is the Promoter for the Appomattox Bluegrass ConcertSeries. Tony stays busy emceeing many events throughout the area andalso he along with Cindy Tweedy host the Big Bluegrass Bonanza RadioShow Sunday Nights 7PM-9PM on WKDE Radio Altavista VA.Cindy TweedyCindy Tweedy is not new to bluegrass music, however, she is new tocohosting The Big Bluegrass Bonanza with host Tony Clifton. She isadjusting well to the world of radio, emceeing events, and is also thefounder and organizer of Bluegrass, Crops & Critters Festival whichhelps promote agriculture in the area. When Cindy isn’t behind themicrophone of bluegrass radio, she works full time as a nurse in theNeonatal Intensive Care Unit at Virginia Baptist Hospital, and also onher family farm where she resides with her husband and two sons.
