Long-term Applied and Community-Based Theatre Projects2015 – PresentPrincipal Investigator and Co-founder and Co-director: Act Out Justice(with Emily Freeman, Orlando REP)Act Out Justice (formerly The Justice Project), in partnership with Orlando REP, is anapplied theatre program that trains high school students in theatre techniques, used in thedevising of an original play. Each AOJ residency culminates in an interactive devisedplay, fusing together personal narratives, current events, movement, and interactiveexercises to engage the audience in discussing issues of social justice. To date,approximately 150 high school students have completed the AOJ curriculum. This projecthas been featured at one international conference (Artful Inquiry Research Group,Montreal, Canada, 2018); three national conferences (American Alliance for Theatre andEducation, Boston MA, 2016; Alliance for Theatre in Higher Education Women inTheatre Preconference, Chicago IL, 2016; ATHE, Orlando FL, 2019); one peer-reviewedpublication (Youth Theatre Journal, 2017); university presentations (Stetson University,2019; Arizona State University, 2016; Brenau University, 2016; James MadisonUniversity, 2016; University of North Carolina Charlotte, 2016), and popularpublications (BroadwayWorld.com, 2017; Pegusus, The Magazine of University ofCentral Florida, 2017).2019 – 2020: Colonial, East River, and Evans High Schools2018 – 2019: Apopka, Cypress Creek, and Evans High Schools2015 – 2016: Evans High School2016 – 2019Principal Investigator: “I Am UCF”: Diverse Digital Narratives(with Edwanna Andrews, Natasha Jones, Brenda Pereyo, Natalie Underberg-Goode, andStephanie Wheeler)Through UCF Quality Enhancement Program and QEP Continuing Excellence grants andin collaboration with faculty in Digital Media, Writing and Rhetoric, and the Center forSocial Justice and Advocacy, “I Am UCF” celebrates the diverse stories of UCF’s studentbody. Fusing together writing, performance, and digital media, students write, perform,and edit original digital stories that tell personal narratives. These stories are thencompiled into a sortable digital campus map, which collectively represents the diverseperspectives of the UCF student body. Campus-wide, over 800 UCF students havecompleted the I Am UCF curriculum and 100 videos are published on the I Am UCFwebsite. I Am UCF has received recognition in: one peer-reviewed co-authored article(The Media Education Research Journal, forthcoming); three international conferencepresentations (International Digital Storytelling Conference, Zakynthos, Greece, 2018; 4thInternational Congress on Visual Culture, Rome, Italy, 2018; HASTAC, Orlando, 2017);University recognition at the Eclectic Knights UCF Alumni event (2017); and invitedkeynote presentation at UCF President’s Leadership Council (2018).2017 – 2018Artistic Director: Adaptive Learning Community Theatre Project(with Belinda Boyd and Megan Sherod)Spearheaded by neuropsychologist and clinical associate professor Megan Sherod andsupported through a UCF Quality Enhancement Program grant, I directed (alongsidetheatre associate professor Belinda Boyd, who served as producing director) an originalplay featuring the stories of members of the Aphasia House, a UCF center offeringrehabilitation services for survivors of stroke. These stories, collected by UCFundergraduate, graduate, and faculty volunteers, were crafted into an original devisedpiece and accompanying post-show community exchange performed at UCF Celebratesthe Arts. This work was featured in a co-authored international peer reviewed publication(Canadian Journal of Disabilities Studies, 2019).Brendel Horn 5
