The number of cases of attention deficit disorder (ADD),also called attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ison the rise among children andteenagers, up 43 percent overan eight-year period, accordingto a recently published study bythe Milken Institute School ofPublic Health at George Washington University. Today, roughly 12 percent of children andteens have the diagnosis. But medication isn’t the onlyalternative for treating ADD.Focusing on natural treatmentsand the individual ADHD typecan produce great results, saysDaniel Amen, MD, a clinical neuroscientist and brain imagingexpert who also is the Founderof Amen Clinics (www.amenclinics.com), which treat patients atsix locations around the country.“Through our work with over20,000 ADD patients over thelast three decades, using apowerful brain-imaging toolcalled SPECT (single photonemission computed tomography), we discovered that ADDis not a single or simple disorder; there are seven differenttypes,” says Amen, author ofnumerous books, including“Healing ADD” and “ChangeYour Brain, Change Your Life.”“In addition, many naturaltreatments can help all the ADDtypes. I always prefer to startwith the least toxic, most effective treatment,” said Amen. That doesn’t mean medication is never right, he says. “Forsome children, medication isthe best option,” Amen says.“But whether they are on medication or not, there are severallifestyle changes that can helpall types.”He suggests parents consider these four non-medical interventions: Nutrition. The right dietcan have an impact. Amensays parents should try puttingtheir children on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet that isrelatively high in healthy fat.The reason: Such a diet has astabilizing effect on blood sugarlevels and helps with both energy level and concentration. Exercise. Parents need tomake sure their children aren’tjust sitting around watchingTV. Exercise increases bloodflow to all parts of the body, thebrain included. That, of course,is particularly beneficial to people with ADD. Exercise alsoincreases the availability of serotonin in the brain, helping tocalm hyperactivity. Meditation. Parents shouldteach their children how tomeditate because researchshows that meditation can calmstress and enhance brain function. Help them find a quiet spotwhere they can sit comfortably,Amen says, then tell them togently close their eyes and focus on their breathing. He suggests starting with just a fewminutes and working up to 10,15 or 20 minutes. Neurofeedback. This is aspecialized treatment that usescomputer technology to balance and optimize the brain.During each session, patientsplay a video game using justtheir brain. Amen says it’s bothfun for the child, and also helpsstrengthen their brains “to ahealthier, more focused state.”“Parents shouldn’t automatically discount medication as away to treat children with ADD,”Amen says. “But they also needto be mindful that medicationisn’t their only option.” Proverbs 31 WomanBy Sarah SanchezThe Bible describes a perfect woman in Proverbs 31. Itdescribes a beautiful womanwho cares for her family andteaches them about God. It describes a woman that is faithfuland serves God with all of herheart, mind and soul, in additionto serving His people. A Proverbs 31 woman is described assomeone who works hard andis smart with her money. In addition, the passage describesa woman who is “clothed withstrength and dignity” (Proverbs31:25). These are just a few ofthe many traits described in thispassage. When reading Proverbs31, many women will strive tobe this “perfect” woman andmany men will strive to marrysomeone with these qualities. But when I read this passage,I instantly think of my mom.Of course, my mom isn’t perfect, but she is pretty close andshe is truly a great role model.I believe she is a Proverbs 31woman.My mom cares and lovesothers, and she has taught meto do the same. Growing up, wewould drive by a person livingon the street and she would goout of her way to find the nearest drive-through, purchasefood, and go back to give it tothat person. My mom is also a lovingmother that has always caredfor our family. Growing up,she would make our lunch-Pick Up Your Copy!In addition to delivering to homes and businesses, copies of our papers are also available at these locations:WALNUT20/20 Vision20687-6 Amar Road(909) 468-9622Animal Hospital20670 E. She would pack us healthysnacks to take to school too.She still brings me snacks andlunch at work and I’m alreadya married adult! But she justhas the gift of nurturing andloving others.Proverbs 31 talks about thisperfect woman being a womanof God; and man do I owe myfaith to my mom. She would bethe one to drag us out of bedfor church every Sunday. Evenwhen my brother and I wentthrough a rebellious stage, shestill prayed for us and sent usscripture (whether our punkyteenager-selves wanted tohear it or not). She never gaveup on us. I think it paid off because we were all baptizedand are currently striving tolive Godly lives. If it wasn’t formy mother constantly sharingher faith with us and believingin us, I’m not sure where wewould all be.My mom is a woman I admire and hope to be one day:both as a wife and mother. Sheis a strong woman who neverloses faith in our God, no matter what circumstance we aregoing through. Growing up, Ialways believed she had a special direct line to God becauseher prayers were always answered. But really, it was because she had an enormousamount of faith and she trulybelieved that God would answer her prayers. My mom is amazing andI’m sure yours is too; or maybe you know someone whohas been like a mother to you.Whoever it may be, as wecelebrate Mother’s Day thisweekend I ask that you honoryour mothers. Whether she iswith you today or not, take amoment to remember all thegood things that she has donefor you even if the only goodthing is that she gave birth toyou. Whatever it is, tell her, show her, write to her, andhonor her. Ron Hubbardpublishes DianeticsCourtesy of History.comOn this day in 1950, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (19111986) publishes Dianetics:The Modern Science of MentalHealth. With this book, Hubbardintroduced a branch of self-helppsychology called Dianetics, which quickly caught fire and, over time, morphed into a belief system boasting millions ofsubscribers: Scientology.Hubbard was already a prolific and frequently publishedwriter by the time he penned thebook that would change his life.Under several pseudonyms inthe 1930s, he published a greatamount of pulp fiction, particularly in the science fiction andfantasy genres. In late 1949,having returned from servingin the Navy in World War II,Hubbard began publishing articles in the pages of AstoundingPhoto Courtesy: Google ImagesScience Fiction, a magazinethat published works by thelikes of Isaac Asimov and JackWilliamson. Out of these grewthe elephantine text known asDianetics: The Modern Scienceof Mental Health. In Dianetics, Hubbard explained that phenomena knownas “engrams” (i.e. memories)were the cause of all psychological pain, which in turnharmed mental and physicalhealth. He went on to claim thatpeople could become “clear,”achieving an exquisite state ofclarity and mental liberation, byexorcising their engrams to an“auditor,” or a listener acting astherapist.Though discredited by themedical and scientific establishment, over 100,000 copiesof Dianetics were sold in thefirst two years of publication, and Hubbard soon found himself lecturing across the country. He went on to write sixmore books in 1951, developing a significant fan base, andestablishing the Hubbard Dianetics Research Foundationin Elizabeth, New Jersey.Despite his fast-growingpopularity from books andtouring, strife within his organization and Hubbard’s ownpersonal troubles nearly crippled his success. Several ofhis research foundations had tobe abandoned due to financialtroubles and he went througha divorce from his second wife.By 1953, however, Hubbardwas able to rebound from thewidespread condemnation beginning to be heaped upon him,and introduced Scientology.Scientology expanded on Dianetics by bringing Hubbard’spopular version of psychotherapy into the realm of philosophy, and ultimately, religion. In only a few years, Hubbardfound himself at the helm of amovement that captured thepopular imagination. As Scientology grew in the 1960s, several national governments became suspicious of Hubbard, accusing him of quackery andbrainwashing his followers.Nonetheless, Hubbard built hisreligion into a multi-million dollar movement that continues tohave a considerable presencein the public eye, due in part toits high profile in Hollywood.
