ClarkeThis evening’s performance is approximately three hours in duration and will beperformed with one intermission.3

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we present this multi-mediacommunity event, Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey,complete with live orchestral and choral accompaniment.Michigan Engineering and the University Musical Society (UMS) take pridein our contributions to the creativity of our University community and region.Through our shared commitment to innovation and excellence, we have cosponsored this performance and its accompanying events as a gift to ourcampus and the people of Michigan.We believe 2001 is one of the most important artistic works of the 20th century.Long recognized as one of the greatest and most inspiring science-fictionworks of all time, the film is heralded for its technological realism, innovativespecial effects, and dazzling use of symphonic and choral music to heightendramatic effect.It also opened our hearts and minds to what may be possible, and drove anentire generation of ambitious minds to pursue this future. As a communitysupported orchestra, generous giving byindividuals and institutions at all levelsdrives the continued success and growthof the institution.Esteemed conductor Leonard Slatkin,called “America’s Music Director” bythe Los Angeles Times, became the DSO’s12th music director, endowed by theKresge Foundation, in 2008. The 2017 –18season marked Maestro Slatkin’s 10thand final year in the role, and in 2018–19,he returns as music director laureate.Acclaimed conductor, arranger, andtrumpeter Jeff Tyzik serves as principalpops conductor, while celebratedtrumpeter and composer TerenceBlanchard holds the Fred A. and Barbara M.Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair.With growing attendance andunwavering philanthropic support from theDetroit community, the DSO’s performanceschedule includes classical, pops, jazz,young people’s, and neighborhoodconcerts and collaborations with highprofile artists, from Steven Spielberg toBen Folds and Lang Lang. Fisher Music Center, oneof America’s most acoustically perfectconcert halls, the DSO actively pursues amission to embrace and inspire individuals,families, and communities throughunsurpassed musical experiences.In a lively and versatile career, RobertZiegler (conductor) has conductedmasterpieces from Albinoni to Zappaand collaborated with artists across themusical spectrum. He trained as a pianistwith Jakob Gimpel and John Ringgold andstudied conducting with Franco Ferrara.A past prize winner in the G. FitelbergConducting Competition, MaestroZiegler has directed orchestrasincluding the London Philharmonic,the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, theBBC Concert Orchestra, the ScottishChamber Orchestra, Dublin’s RTE Concertand Symphony Orchestras, the City ofBirmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBCNational Orchestra of Wales, and the RoyalOpera House, Covent Garden. Internationalguest conducting includes the GulbenkianOrchestra, l’Orchestre Nationale d’Ilede France, the Japan Philharmonic, theShanghai Symphony and Philharmonicorchestras, the San Francisco Symphony,the New Zealand Symphony, and theAdelaide Symphony. He has performed the scorefor Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey withthe Gulbenkian Orchestra, the AdelaideSymphony, the Japan Philharmonic, and theLondon Philharmonic. He has conductedconcerts of the music of John Williams,including Mr. Williams’ 80th birthday galaconcert at the Royal Albert Hall.Maestro Ziegler’s extensive work infilm also includes recording originalsoundtracks by Radiohead guitarist JonnyGreenwood (There Will Be Blood, InherentVice), Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings,The Hobbit), Alberto Iglesias, Max Richter,Shigeru Umebayashi, Lorne Balfe, MichaelGiacchino, Mark Isham, and Alf Clausen forThe Simpsons.5

Musica Sacra, the longest continuouslyperforming professional chorus inNew York City, was founded in 1964 byRichard Westenburg and is now underthe artistic leadership of Kent Tritle,who began his 12th season this year.Musica Sacra presents performanceseach year at venues throughout NewYork, including Carnegie Hall and LincolnCenter for the Performing Arts, and itsannual performances of Handel’s Messiahat Carnegie Hall are a New York holidaytradition.Musica Sacra previously joined theNew York Philharmonic for its live scoreperformance of 2001: A Space Odyssey.The chorus is frequently invited to performwith such ensembles as the Orchestra ofSt. Luke’s and the New York City Ballet, inthe Mostly Mozart Festival, and by concertpresenters throughout the region.Musica Sacra has given the world andNew York premieres of more than 25 choralworks, including, most recently, the worldpremiere of Evan Fein’s oratorio Deborah,based on the biblical character fromthe Book of Judges, at Alice Tully Hall atLincoln Center.Musica Sacra’s most recent recordingis Eternal Reflections, an album of vocalworks by Robert Paterson, the awardwinning composer and founder of theAmerican Modern Ensemble.
