MIKE CALLOWAYPROBUS CLUB of SEAFORTH YEAR 24 - 2014-15Year 24 has seen the Presidency change hands from Ian Smith to incoming President MikeCalloway And VP Brian Cranch. This year saw the club change its focus and future by opening the club to both genders.Thelast few years has seen the club membership fall substantially and with the change themembership has grown significantly. A welcome to all our new members! The activities for the year covered a great variety of theatre, luncheons, bus travel, and ourever popular Getaway! Very well attended and coordinated by Trevor Wallin, Ray Stallworthy,Brian Cranch and Mike Calloway. Both the President’s Gala Lunch at the Balgowlah RSL and Christmas lunch at Long Reef GolfClub with is magnificent views were well attended and enjoyed by all.Our annual picnic at Manly Dam was postponed until April due to the unfortunate passing ofLois Ryan.Unfortunately the year was marred by the loss of a significant number of members as well aslong standing visitors Lois Ryan and Betty Higgins. Much loved members Len Wilson, RickClapp, Noel Harrs, Maurice Tye, Dick Sanson, John Daly, Keith Anderson and Tom Setright. All will be sorely missed! We had a wonderful range of speakers arranged admirably by Ron Barratt. there were somememorable topics, Queen bees, Parkinson’s disease, Macular degeneration and what goes onat Pine Gap amongst many other interesting topics.

The group have tripped to Narrabeen Lakes, Long Reef Headlands, Manly to Fairlightand many others.Michael Calloway introduced us to our website and its use. We also heard a brief life historyfrom members Peter Kendall, David Foster, Ron Selling and Rondda Hoskinson during ourmembers Focus.Other new activities included - snooker, cards and a Technology Workshop.Golf ceased as one of our annual activities due to lack of numbers.

Bowls(April 2014 - March 2015)Coordinator – Lee MurrellAprilAlmost with a sigh of relief we finalised our Quest for the Ric Clapp Trophy. Sharing firstplace are Rudi Hochstetter and John Rose, with Don Elliot, Patricia Osborne and TonySargent sharing second place. In my memory this is a first. Don Elliot was kind enough tosay it was good handicapping.MayAnother bosca day today (15/5), with 20 members rolling up. Nice to have Noel Harrscome to watch a few ends, and join us for a chat and a coffee. We also had the pleasureof having Ian MacMillan coming back for a game, after a long break. Great!JuneʺThe Rains Came.ʺ Guess it serves me right for skiting about the good run we have hadwith the weather. Twelve stalwarts rolled up Thursday. We had only played about 5‐6ends, when the drizzle started, so MOST of us headed for coffee and bickie, except forone four. Gerry and Helen, and Stuart and Terry, who donned their wet weather gear, and Rolled On!!!JulyOur winner of the coveted Ric Clapp Trophy was Warren Ogborne with a magnificentscore of 9½ points, with Ella Doutreband and the John Daly tied for second on 7.AugNo clear cut winners at this stage, a few in a pretty tight bunch, so next couple of gameswill be important. Can’t help being biased, we’ve even roped President Michael in!September. What a cracker day for the last game of our Comp. And we only had eleven starters!Judy Parker taking advantage of the conditions to have a win, taking her score to 7, justhalf a point ahead of a strongly finishing Rudi Hochstetter on 6 1/2, with Jan Murrell andShirley Wickenden sharing third place with 5 1/2 points each. Congratulations to ourwinners.OctoberThis last week we moved down to Green 3. Only three weeks into our comp. so nothingto report yet. Look forward to have a great bowl next week, with a good roll up.NovemberThe top green, number 1, is being renovated, so we have been using number 3. The topgreen should be in play by Christmas. Still five games left in our comp, so a bit hard to

pick any likely winners as yet. Numbers have been down, a couple of days we didn’tmake the mandatory minimum of eight for results to count!DecemberNo report.Jan – 2015No report.FebNumbers were back up to 18 last week, which is good to see. We are coming up to week5 in our current 10- week Comp. Scores are still scattered with only a point between 7 or8 Members.MarchWe have been blessed with pleasant mornings, and the No. 1 green is running true. Webowlers have been enjoying the bowls and the company. Our new member Graeme Goldberg brought his wife Sue with him yesterday for a rollup— bonza! It’s the last week of our comp next week. Two of our “stars“ are on 6, withanother trailing on 5½, so we are looking forward to a tight chase for the Ric ClappTrophy.

President’s Message to MembersMarch has been a difficult month for all Seaforth Probus members with the passing of NoelHarrs and now Lois Ryan departing from Barry. It is sad when we lose a member but becauseboth of these individuals contributed so much to our Probus Club and had such a tremendousimpact on our lives, we will miss them even more. I have sent sympathy cards to both familieson behalf of Seaforth Probus and expressed our profound sympathy and offered our supportand help in their hour of need. But with the coming of March and the start of autumn there is a change in the air and we lookforward to a renewed sense of being with the change of seasons. Our last order of business forthis year is our Annual General Meeting which will be at our regular meeting on March 24. Wewill be reviewing the past year and planning for the future. This past year has been a monumental year with the changing of our club from a men onlyclub to an open-to-everyone club and the changes it has brought. I must say all the changes havebeen positive with our overall membership rising from a low of 60 to a current high of 72. Theinflux of women, partners of members and single ladies, has been positive and we have pickedup a number of male members and couples. This all adds to our viability of our club to face thefuture with confidence. We have had a great range of speakers who have made our meetingmore interesting and enjoyable this past year. We have been on lots of interesting and funactivities throughout the year with our Getaway for an extended time being a lot of fun. Theopera, musicals, theatre and visits to the Fish Markets being just some of the highlights to theyear gone by.We look forward to a new upcoming year of activities, excursions, and Getaways with lots ofsmiles and fun for all. If you have not been involved in our activities then you are missing outon a great time and lots of friendships made on the outings. So get involved, choose your interestand get to know your fellow members and enjoy the benefits of Seaforth Probus.ThanksMichael Calloway
