If the student is absent from class, it is the student’sresponsibility to learn about assignments or any class work missed, either from othermembers of the class or the instructor. The student’s participation in this course is essential tothe success of the learning experience. If the student has questions about the concepts,projects, labs, or presentations, the student is encouraged to communicate with the instructorduring the class, schedule a personal appointment or contact the instructor by phone. Thestudent is also encouraged to communicate with other class members for clarification. It is alsothe responsibility of the student to keep up with points accrued throughout the semester. Finalpoints will be available at the end of the course.Participation: Class participation, involvement, and discussion are essential to the success ofSpeech 1311. Each student is encouraged to attend class daily to participate in class discussionand activities. To encourage student success in Speech 1311, students will earn points per dayfor class participation. If the student arrives in class after the roll is called or leaves before theend of class, student will forfeit points for the day. Student absence from class is consideredunexcused with the exception of: personal or family illness requiring physicianassistance/hospitalization, Collin school-sponsored activity, religious holy day or death of afamily member. Documentation must be provided within one class day after return to classwith the exception of a religious holy day. If a student is going to miss a class for a religiousholy day, student must provide documentation within the first two days of class to beconsidered for any make-up work. A verbal explanation is appreciated but will not suffice assufficient documentation for consideration. Please advise instructor prior to absence from class(if possible) and provide appropriate documentation for all other absences. Routine visits to yourdoctor or dentist do not constitute an excused absence.The Participation Grade is assigned by the professor at the end of the semester and isbased on the following. If student misses a teamwork day, an additional 10 points willautomatically be deducted from participation grade for each day that is missed.Point Deduction for Absences on Student Presentation Days - Students are expected to bepresent on all speech, group presentation days. If student does not attend class on anyspeech presentation day, an additional 20 points will automatically be deducted fromparticipation grade for each day that is missed.Point Deduction for Absence on Final Exam Day - Students are expected to be presenton the final exam date. If student does not attend class on the final exam day, anadditional 20 points will automatically be deducted from participation gradeBehavior: Respect for the classroom environment is an essential component for studentengagement and success. It is the responsibility of the student to engage in behavior that isrespectful and supportive during classroom instruction and interaction. (See Student Code ofConduct.)NOTE: CELL PHONE USAGE: Cell phone usage in class is highly disruptive to theprofessor and other students. All cell phones must be turned off while class is in sessionexcept as approved by professor.Unfortunately, some students choose to ignore this request. Any cell phone usage(unless otherwise approved by the professor) during class will result in loss ofparticipation points. First usage – 20 Points, Second usage 40 Points, Third usage – 60Points and student will be asked to leave the classroom and an incident report will befiled with the Dean of students.Laptops are to be used for note taking or research only and must be approved by theprofessor. Laptops used to surf the web during class time will result in the same pointloss as cell phone usage.Method of Evaluation:All labs, presentations and assignments are based upon a point system. Students will receive athorough description of requirements for all assignments before they are due as well as adetailed explanation of all assignments and grading procedures. Students will be assessed interms of concept comprehension and skill acquisition/application. See course site for specificinstructions and grading criteria for all assignments as well as Instructor Power Points. Allpapers must be typed, and students are encouraged to photocopy all assignments includingrough drafts in the event of lost or missing papers. All assignments, written or oral, are due onthe day assigned by the instructor. All assignments must be typed. No handwritten assignmentswill be accepted. Students may deliver assignment to professor in I206 prior to class.Assignment will not be accepted if not submitted before class or at the beginning of class(within first 15 minutes) unless student can provide required documentation. Should the studentmiss class and absence is excused, student must submit required assignment on the followingclass day or make up an assignment or test within twenty-four hours after return to class. Allsubmissions after due date will result in loss of points.

NOTE: All oral presentations must be made in class and on designated dates asscheduled for presentations. Due to time constraints, there is no make-up of the groupproject presentation or the final exam. Videotaped presentations are not accepted. NOEXCEPTIONS. The final exam must be completed on the date specified by the collegeand cannot be delivered earlier or later than the designated final exam date.Skill Mastery/Concept Comprehension Service Orientation - Student will view the film, Pay It Forward, and engage in a serviceorientation project based upon the concept of “pay it forward”. Student will develop a plan ofaction outlining goals for project and write a paper outlining goals. Student will be expectedto engage in four communication interactions with a significant person in his/her life and be ofservice to that person or work to improve the relationship. Student will also write a paper thatoutlines communication concepts and skills that were applicable to the communicationinteraction, provide a critical analysis of the outcome of the service, and write a personalevaluation. Plan of Action – 25 Points, Reflective Summaries – 100 Points, PersonalEvaluation – 25 Points. TOTAL POINT VALUE – 150 POINTS.Project - Based Learning Communication Projects / Peer Reviews-Group Project - Students will be divided into groups, and each group will select a topic(provided by the professor) to study throughout the semester. Students will be expectedto view films, videos, read articles/books, and develop activities to present to the class.Each group will be given an assigned day to teach the topic to the class and engage theclass in discussion, activity, and / or exercises. Individual members of the group willprepare an oral presentation and support with visual aids/film clips, videos, PowerPoints. All members of the group must be involved in the development of the groupactivity/discussion. TOTAL POINT VALUE - 200 POINTS-NOTE: Students will be given time in class to work on this project. If a studentmisses more than one teamwork day and absence is unexcused, student will bedropped from the group and will forfeit the teamwork and group presentationgrade.-Peer Reviews – Students will engage in a peer review of self and members of the projectgroup. Students will review the Teamwork Evaluation Rubric and use the rubric as aguideline to evaluate all members of the group. Students will fill out the Peer ReviewSurvey for each member of the group. All surveys must be typed, submitted on duedate, and will not be accepted via email. Any survey that is handwritten will not begraded.
