That was the beginning of an obsessionfor Schomburgkias and their hybrids – the world of“schombo-love”!Paul and his wifeMary now have thelargestandmostdiverse collection ofthis group of orchidsand their hybrids in theworld at their SarasotanurserywiththeHawaiian name MekeAloha Orchids.Schomburgkia was a genus in the Cattleyaalliance that has since been renamed, some speciesbecoming Laelias and others Myrmecophilas. Buteven though they were renamed, the formerSchomburgkias still look quite distinctive, havinglong flower stems (sometimes several feet long!)topped by clusters of flowers with attractive wavyedged sepals and petals.Paul does not take credit cards, so if you want tobuy orchids from him, be sure to bring cash orchecks. Some time ago Paul spread the love to HOS withhis “Schombo Love 101” talk.
