ADULT AND OVERALL PROGRAMSAAmputee services and chronic painThe multidisciplinary adult amputee clinic at the UC Davis MedicalCenter evaluates extremity loss caused by trauma, vascular disease andother factors. Our staff includes physiatrists, physical therapists, nurses,psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, prosthetists and orthotists,who are experienced in rehabilitation and prepared to meet theindividual needs of amputee patients. BBrain tumorsThe brain tumor program combines experienced professionals and theworld’s most advanced technologies to effectively treat difficult-to-resecttumors. The program offers teams of specialists delivering leading-edgetreatments, such as minimally invasive endoscopic and keyhole surgicaltechniques that can remove brain and skull based tumors through smallopenings in the nose, eyebrow, or behind the ear. Surgical treatmentof brain tumors located in eloquent brain regions often includes awakebrain surgery for mapping of speech, vision, and sensorimotor systems.Professionals from neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neuro-oncology,neuroradiology, neuropathology, neurology, and radiation oncologycollaborate to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for adultsand children.Brain and spinal cord injuryNeurosurgery, neurology and physiatry faculty members provideoutstanding care for patients who have suffered serious brain injury asa result of accidents or sports activities. UC Davis Health’s spinal cordinjury rehabilitation service is the only one of its kind in inland NorthernCalifornia that provides integrated comprehensive management to bothspinal cord injury inpatients and outpatients. CCerebrovascular disease and Stroke CenterUC Davis Medical Center’s stroke program provides acute inpatientcare and outpatient management of cerebrovascular disease froma team that includes fellowship-trained stroke neurologists, aninterventional neuroradiologist, and a neurosurgeon dual-trainedin open surgery and endovascular embolization. The program is acertified primary stroke center.Our telestroke program provides 24x7/365 day a year call access tovascular neurologists. The service can assist with assessing symptoms,confirming diagnoses, and identifying need for interventions such astPA administration or mechanical thrombectomy, on a contracted basis.Patients triaged in our emergency department also receive timelyand aggressive medical care and treatments that include thrombolytictherapy, interventional neuroradiologic techniques, and newmedications under clinical investigation. Our inpatient stroke unitprovides intensive monitoring, aggressive evaluation of etiology andearly rehabilitation of stroke patients, and participates in the evaluationof new forms of treatment. EElectromyography (EMG)UC Davis Health’s electromyography laboratory is accredited by theAmerican Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine(AANEM). The laboratory has earned Accreditation with Exemplary Status.Epilepsy and epilepsy monitoringOur comprehensive epilepsy program is a leading program for themedical and surgical management of complex epileptic disorders. TheNational Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) has designated UCDavis as a level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, the highest ratingawarded. GGeneral neurologyOur general neurology service provides diagnosis and treatment foradults and children with a variety of neurological disorders such asdementia, epilepsy, movement disorders, tremor, dystonia, multiplesclerosis, neuromuscular conditions, headache and sleep disorders.Patients may subsequently be referred to one of our neurologicalspecialty programs.General neurosurgeryOur neurosurgery specialists are also trained in all aspects of generalneurosurgical practice, and thus are able to effectively manage thecommon problems as well as the unusual, highly challenging casesin their specific subspecialties. The department’s organization intosubspecialized programs (cerebrovascular, functional, pediatrics,pituitary, skull-base surgery, spine, trauma-neurocritical care, andtumor), and intradepartmental referral to specialists addressingvarious categories of disease, have permitted the accumulation of theexperience and expertise known to improve patient outcomes in bothcomplicated and simple cases.UC DAVIS HEALTH 9

HHeadacheOur clinical practice diagnoses and treats patients suffering fromchronic headaches and strives to apply the latest treatment trends.UC Davis physician-researchers also investigate the causes andtreatments of migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headachesto help inform and improve clinical practice.Hereditary, autonomic and neurodegenerative disorders, andneurological effects of systemic disordersAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)The multidisciplinary ALS clinic at UC Davis is certified as an ALSCenter of Excellence by the ALS Association. The outpatient clinic isconducted jointly by our Department of Neurology and Departmentof Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.Multiple sclerosis and other immunological disorders of the brain andspinal cordThe multiple sclerosis clinic provides expert diagnosis andtreatment for a diverse range of patients who have multiplesclerosis and other neuroimmunological disorders. Our MS teamcomprises two neurologists or neuroimmunologists, and a MS nurse.Huntington’s Disease Center of ExcellenceOur Huntington’s disease clinic is recognized as a Huntington’sDisease Society of America (HDSA) Center of Excellence for ourexpertise in clinical care. The clinic is one of the largest in thecountry, and the only level 1 Center of Excellence in NorthernCalifornia. MMemory disorders (Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, aging)The UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Center aims to translate researchadvances into improved diagnosis and treatment for patients withAlzheimer’s disease and related dementias, while finding ways to preventor cure later-life cognitive impairment and dementia. The center is oneof 33 funded by the National Institute on Aging and brings togetherneurologists, geriatric psychiatrists, geriatricians, neuropsychologists,psychometrists, social workers, nurses and others.A specialty clinic at the center evaluates patients who present withmemory problems, using a range of medical, neurological, psychologicaland/or psychosocial evaluations. Movement disordersThe Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery have an outstandingmovement disorders program that provides inpatient and outpatientevaluation, treatment and management of a range of diseases thatcause involuntary excessive movements or slow, awkward anddeliberate movements.Faculty members provide diagnosis, management, and medical andsurgical treatment of movement disorders such as:nParkinson’s diseasenAtaxianHuntington’s diseasenDystonianEssential tremornOther movement disordersPatients receive the latest treatments, such as pharmaceuticalinterventions, botulinum toxin therapy, and deep brain stimulation(DBS) implantation and programming.Myasthenia gravisUC Davis Health is home to some of the nation’s experts in rareneuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-EatonSyndrome and inherited forms of myasthenia. NNeurocritical careCritically ill patients with neurological injury and illness receive expertmanagement through our interdisciplinary neurocritical care program. Ourneurointensivists help treat diseases such as traumatic brain injury, spinalcord injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, stroke,neuromuscular weakness, and status epilepticus, and employ multiplemodes of monitoring and neurosurgical interventions to individualizetreatment plans.Our 10-bed Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) specializes in themost complex care of neurosurgical, neurotrauma and stroke patients,and offers advanced neurological monitoring and innovative interventionsthat allow for the best quality outcome for patients. This unit also servesas the specialty area for the management of stroke patients.Neurodevelopmental disordersThe UC Davis MIND Institute is an internationally known center ofclinical expertise and emerging research focused on children withneurodevelopmental disorders. Faculty physicians, psychologists, andscientists provide expert care and develop programs and best treatmentsfor autism spectrum disorder, fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome,attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, andother neurodevelopmental disorders.The MIND Institute is home to the Massie Family Clinic and providesmedical assessments and psychological testing. Clinic providers givetreatment recommendations to referring schools, agencies, physicians,and mental health clinicians.The Department of Neurosurgery, in collaboration with the Departmentsof Surgery and Pediatrics, provides superb care of pediatric conditionssuch as perinatal intraventricular hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, craniofacialanomalies, and spina bifida. Advanced procedures performedinclude fetal surgery, endoscopic third ventriculostomy, craniofacialreconstruction, and repair of complex spina dysraphism. NeurodiagnosticsOur neuroradiology and interventional neuroradiology team providesthe most diagnostically accurate assessment of the central nervoussystem, and actively works to advance the science of imaging in itsclinical application. The unit consists of diagnostic neuroradiologistswho practice solely in the area of neuroradiology, and are subspecialtytrained and certified in the assessment of diseases and injuriesof the brain, neck and spine. The section also includes dedicatedneurointerventionalists also subspecialty trained in the treatment ofvascular diseases of these regions.We use a broad range of standard imaging modalities such as CT, MRI,and PET, as well as advanced imaging techniques such as magneticresonance perfusion, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusiontensor imaging to improve diagnostic accuracy and help determinenew applications.NeurogenomicsIncreasingly, DNA sequencing of an individual’s DNA providesinformation about their underlying neurological symptoms.
