Getting to know your computer Connecting USB devicesYou can connect a USB device to your computer by inserting its USB plug(Type A) into the USB port on your computer.The first time you plug a USB device into a USB port on your computer,Windows automatically installs a driver for that device. After the driver isinstalled, you can disconnect and reconnect the device without performingany additional steps.Note: Typically, Windows detects a newly connected device after connecting it and theninstalls the driver automatically. However, some devices might require you to installthe driver before connecting. Check the documentation provided by the manufacturerof the device before connecting.Before disconnecting a USB storage device, make sure your computer hasfinished using the device to transfer the data. Click the Safely RemoveHardware and Eject Media icon in the notification area of the Windowsdesktop screen to remove the device before disconnecting.Note: If your USB device uses a power cord, connect the device to a power source beforeconnecting it. Otherwise, the device may not be recognized. When the computer is in sleep mode, you can only use the keyboard instead of the mouseto wake up the computer.8

Fordetails, see “Using memory cards (notsupplied)” on page 13. System status indicatorsThe system status indicators show the current status of your computer.Power and battery status indicator Green: The battery has a charge between 20% and 100% and the ACadapter is not connected to the computer, or the battery has a chargebetween 80% and 100% and the AC power adapter is connected to thecomputer. Blinking green: The battery has a charge between 20% and 80% and theAC power adapter is connected to the computer or the computer is in sleepmode. Amber: The battery has a charge between 5% and 20% and the AC adapteris not connected to the computer. Blinking amber: The battery has a charge of 20% or less and the AC poweradapter is connected to the computer. Off: The battery is detached, or the battery has a charge of 5% or less andthe AC adapter is not connected to the computer, or the computer ispowered off or in hibernate mode.12

Getting to know your computerHard disk drive indicatorWhen this indicator is on, the hard disk drive is reading or writing data.Attention: When the indicator is on, do not put the computer into sleep mode or turn off thecomputer.When the indicator is on, do not move the computer. Sudden physical shock mightcause hard disk drive errors. Using memory cards (not supplied)Your computer supports the following types of memory card: Secure Digital (SD) card Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card SD eXtended Capacity (SDXC) card MultiMediaCard (MMC)Attention: Insert only one card in the slot at a time.This card reader does not support SDIO devices (Such as SDIO Bluetooth, and so on).Inserting a memory cardSlide a memory card in until it clicks into place.Note: If a dummy card is shipped with the computer, push the dummy card and remove itbefore inserting a memory card.Removing a memory card1 Push the memory card in until you hear a click.2 Gently pull the memory card out of the memory card slot.Attention: 13Before removing a memory card, disable it through Safely Remove Hardware andEject Media to avoid data corruption.

Chapter 2. Learning the basicsConfiguring the operating system for the first time ---------You need to configure the operating system when it is first used. Theconfiguration process may include the procedures below: Accepting the end user license agreement Configuring the Internet connection Registering the operating system Creating a user accountPutting the computer to sleep or shutting it down ------------When you have finished working with your computer, you can put it to sleepor shut it down. Putting your computer to sleepIf you will be away from your computer for only a short time, put thecomputer to sleep. When the computer is in sleep mode, you can quicklywake it up to resume use, bypassing the startup process.To put the computer to sleep, do one of the following: Close the display lid. Press the power button. Preform the following based on the operating system.For the Windows 7 operating system:Click StartSleep.For the Windows 8.1 operating system:Open the charms bar, then select SettingsPowerSleep.Attention: Wait until the power and battery status indicator light starts blinking green(indicating that the computer is in sleep mode) before you move your computer.Moving your computer while the hard disk drive is spinning can damage the harddisk, causing loss of data.15

Chapter 2. Learning the basicsTo wake up the computer, do one of the following: Press the power button. Press the Fn key on the keyboard. Shutting down the computerIf you are not going to use your computer for a long time, shut it down.To shut down your computer: For the Windows 7 operating system: Click StartShut down. For the Windows 8.1 operating system: Move your cursor to the lower‐right corner of the screen to open thecharms bar, then select SettingsPowerShut down.Connecting to a wireless network ------------------------------------------ Enabling the wireless connectionTo connect to a wireless network, do the following:1 Ensure the airplane mode is turned off. If the airplane mode is turned on,press the hotkey F7 () to turn this mode off.2 View the available wireless networks. For the Windows 7 operating system:Click the wireless network connection status icon in the Windowsnotification area. A list of available wireless networks will be displayed. For the Windows 8.1 operating system:Open the charms bar and select Settings. A list ofavailable wireless networks will be displayed.3 Click a network name in the list, and then click Connect.Note: Some networks require a network security key or passphrase to connect. To connect to one of those networks, ask the network administrator or the Internetservice provider (ISP) for the security key or passphrase. Software configuration16

Learning the basicsConsult your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and search the Windows Helpand Support Center for details on how to configure your computer.Help and support -----------------------------------------If you have questions about using the Windows operating system, refer toWindows Help and Support. To access Windows Help and Support: For the Windows 7 operating system: Click StartHelp and Support. For the Windows 8.1 operating system:‐ Open the charms bar and select Settings, and then select Help on theSettings menu. Fn F1 or Fn F1.‐ Press the Windows keyYou can read the Windows Help and Support file on your computer. You canalso get online help and support by clicking on one of the two links listedunder More to explore.Note: Windows 8.1 also provides an app, Help Tips. You can find it on the Start screen, tolearn more information on new features of Windows 8.1.17

Learning the basicsOperating system interfaces (for the Windows 8.1operating system) --------------------------------------Windows 8.1 comes with two main user interfaces: the Start screen and theWindows desktop.To switch from the Start screen to the Windows desktop, do one of thefollowing: Select the Desktop tile on the Start screen. Press the Windows key D.To switch from the desktop to the Start screen, do one of the following: Select Startfrom the charms bar. Press the Windows key. Move the cursor to the lower‐left corner, and then select the Start screenbutton.Start screen18Desktop

Learning the basicsCharms and the charms bar (for the Windows 8.1operating system) ---------------------------------------Charms are navigation buttons that let you access basic tasks quickly.Charms include: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings. The charms baris the menu that contains the charms. To display the charms bar, do one ofthe following: Move the cursor to the upper‐right or lower‐right corner until the charmsbar is displayed. Press the Windows key C.Search charmThe Search charm enables you to find what you are looking for, includingapps, settings and files.19

Learning the basicsShare charmThe Share charm lets you send links, photos, and more to your friends andsocial networks without leaving the app you are in.Start charmThe Start charm is a fast way to go to the Start screen.Devices charmThe Devices charm allows you to connect or send files to connected externaldevices, including the devices to play, print, and project.Settings charmThe Settings charm lets you perform basic tasks, such as setting the volumeor shutting down the computer. Also, you can get to the Control Panelthrough the Settings charm when on the Desktop screen.20

Chapter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery systemThe Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is software designed to back up andrestore your computer. You can use it to restore the system partition to itsoriginal status in case of a system failure. You can also create user backupsfor easy restoration as required.Note:To utilize the features of the OneKey Recovery system, your hard disk already includes ahidden partition by default to store the system image file and the OneKey Recoverysystem program files. This default partition is hidden for security reasons, which is whythe available disk space is less than the stated capacity. Backing up the system partitionYou can back up the system partition to an image file. To back up the systempartition, do the following:1 Click OneKey Recovery on the home screen to start the Lenovo One KeyRecovery system.2 Click System Backup.3 Select a back‐up location and click Next to start the backup.Note: You can choose a back‐up location on the local hard disk drive or an external storagedevice. The back‐up process may take a while. The back‐up process is only available when Windows can be started normally. RestoringYou can choose to restore the system partition to its original status or to apreviously created back‐up point. To restore the system partition, do thefollowing:1 Press the Novo button or click OneKey Recovery on the home screen tostart the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.2 Click System Recovery. The computer restarts to the recovery environment.3 Follow the on‐screen instructions to restore the system partition to itsoriginal status or to a previously created back‐up point.Note: The recovery process is irreversible. Make sure to back up any data you wish to save on thesystem partition before starting the recovery process. The recovery process may take a while. Make sure to connect the AC power adapter toyour computer during the recovery process. The above instructions should be followed when Windows can be started normally. When the computer is in hibernation status, you can not start the Lenovo OneKey Recoverysystem by pressing the Novo button for Windows 7 system.21

Chapter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery systemIf Windows cannot be started, follow the steps below to start the LenovoOneKey Recovery system:1 Shut down the computer.2 Press the Novo button. From the Novo Button Menu, select Systemrecovery and press Enter.22

Finding informationWhat safety precautions should I follow when using my computer?The Lenovo Safety and General Information Guide which came with yourcomputer contains safety precautions for using your computer. Read andfollow all the precautions when using your computer.Where can I find the hardware specifications for my computer?You can find hardware specification for your computer from the printedflyers which came with your computer.Where can I find warranty information?For the warranty applicable to your computer, including the warrantyperiod and type of warranty service, see the Lenovo limited warranty flyerthat came with your computer. Drivers and preinstalled softwareWhere are the installation discs for Lenovo preinstalled software (desktopsoftware)?Your computer did not come with installation discs for Lenovo preinstalledsoftware. If you need to reinstall preinstalled software, you can find theinstallation program on the D partition of your hard disk. If you cannotfind the installation program there, download it from the Lenovoconsumer support Web site.Where can I find drivers for the various hardware devices of my computer?If your computer is preinstalled with a Windows operating system, Lenovoprovides drivers for the hardware devices that you need on the D partitionof your hard disk. You can also download the latest device drivers from theLenovo consumer support Web site.23

Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Recovery systemWhere are the recovery discs?Your computer did not come with recovery discs. Use the recovery systemif you need to restore the system to its factory status.What can I do if the back‐up process fails?If you can start the backup but it fails during the back‐up process, try thefollowing steps:1 Close all open programs, and then restart the back‐up process.2 Check to see if the destination media is damaged. Select another pathand then try again.When do I need to restore the system to its factory status?Use this feature when the operating system fails to start up. If there iscritical data on the system partition, back it up before starting recovery. BIOS setup utilityWhat is the BIOS setup utility?The BIOS setup utility is ROM‐based software. It communicates basiccomputer information and provides options for setting boot devices,security, hardware mode, and other preferences.How can I start the BIOS setup utility?To start the BIOS setup utility:1 Shut down the computer.2 Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup.How can I change the boot priority?There are two boot priorities: UEFI First and Legacy First. To change theboot priority, start the BIOS setup utility and set Boot Priority to UEFI Firstor Legacy First in the Boot menu.24

Chapter 4. TroubleshootingWhen do I need to change the boot priority?The default boot priorities are UEFI First. If you need to install a legacyoperating system (that is, an earlier version than that of your currentoperating system) on your computer, you will need to change the bootpriority to Legacy First. The legacy operating system cannot be installed ifyou do not change the boot priority. Getting helpHow can I contact the customer support center?See “Chapter 3. Getting help and service” of Lenovo Safety and GeneralInformation Guide.25

Chapter 4. TroubleshootingTroubleshooting -------------------------------------------Display problems26When I turn on thecomputer, nothing appearson the screen. If the screen is blank, make sure that:‐ The AC power adapter is connected to thecomputer, and the power cord is plugged into aworking electrical outlet.‐ The computer power is on. Press the power buttonagain for confirmation.‐ If you are using the AC power adapter or thebattery, and the battery status indicator is on, pressF12 () to make the screen brighter. If these items are set correctly, and the screenremains blank, have the computer serviced.When I turn on thecomputer, only a whitecursor appears on a blankscreen. Restore backed‐up files to your Windowsenvironment or the entire contents of your hard diskto its original factory contents using the recoverysystem. If you still see only the cursor on the screen,have the computer serviced.My screen goes blank whilethe computer is on. Your screen saver or power management might beenabled. Do one of the following to exit from thescreen saver or to resume from sleep mode:‐ Touch the touchpad.‐ Press any key on the keyboard.‐ Press the power button.‐ Press F9 () to confirm whether the backlight forthe LCD screen has been turned off.‐ If the problem persists, follow the solution in the nextproblem “The screen is unreadable or distorted.”The screen is unreadable ordistorted. Make sure that:‐ The display device driver is installed correctly.‐ The screen resolution and color quality are setcorrectly.‐ The monitor type is correct.Incorrect characters appearon the screen. Are the operating system or programs installedcorrectly? If they are installed and configuredcorrectly, have the computer serviced.

Chapter 4. TroubleshootingBIOS password problemsI forgot my password. If you forget your user password, you must ask thesystem administrator to reset your user password. If you forget your HDD password, a Lenovoauthorized servicer cannot reset your password orrecover data from the hard disk. You must take yourcomputer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or amarketing representative to have the hard disk drivereplaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a feewill be charged for parts and service. If you forget your Supervisor password, a Lenovoauthorized servicer cannot reset your password. Youmust take your computer to a Lenovo authorizedservicer or a marketing representative to have thesystem board replaced. Proof of purchase isrequired, and a fee will be charged for parts andservice.Sleep problemsThe critical low-battery errormessage appears, and thecomputer immediately turnsoff. The battery power is getting low. Connect the ACpower adapter to the computer, or replace thebattery with a fully charged one.The computer enters sleepmode immediately afte
