18. Important information: Cell phonesSome hearing aid users have reported a buzzing sound intheir hearing aids when they are using cell phones.According to the ANSI 63.19 (American National StandardMethods of Measurement of Compatibility betweenWireless Communications Devices and HearingInstruments) standard, the compatibility of a particularhearing aid and cell phone can be predicted by adding therating for the hearing aid immunity to the rating for thecell phone emissions. The sum of the hearing aid rating(e.g. M2/T2 2) and the telephone rating (e.g. M3/T3 3) is5, and any combination that equals 5 will provide “normaluse”; a sum of 6 or greater would indicate “excellentperformance”. The equipment performancemeasurements, categories and system classifications arebased upon the best information available but cannotguarantee that all users will be satisfied. The immunity ofthis hearing aid is at least M2/T2.48

Note: the performance of individual hearing aids may varywith individual cell phones. Therefore, please try thehearing aid with your cell phone or, if you are purchasinga new phone, be sure to try it with your hearing aid priorto purchase. For additional guidance, please ask yourhearing care professional for the booklet entitled “hearingaid compatibility with digital wireless cell phones”.49

19. For the US market only, complieswith the FDA regulationsWarning to Hearing Aid DispensersA hearing aid dispenser should advise a prospective hearingaid user to consult promptly with a licensed physician(preferably an ear specialist) before dispensing a hearing aidif the hearing aid dispenser determines through inquiry, actual observation, or review of any other availableinformation concerning the prospective user, that theprospective user has any of the following conditions:(i) Visible congenital or traumatic deformity of the ear.(ii) History of active drainage from the ear within theprevious 90 days.(iii) History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing losswithin the previous 90 days.(iv) Acute or chronic dizziness.(v) Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onsetwithin the previous 90 days.50

(vi) Audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater than15 decibels at 500 hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz.(vii) Visible evidence of significant cerumen accumulationor a foreign body in the ear canal.(viii) Pain or discomfort in the ear. Special care should beexercised in selecting and fitting a hearing aid whosemaximum sound pressure level exceeds 132 decibelsbecause there may be risk of impairing the remaininghearing of the hearing aid user. (This provision isrequired only for those hearing aids with a maximumsound pressure capability greater than 132 decibels (dB).Important Notice for Prospective Hearing Aid UsersGood health practice requires that a person with ahearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensedphysician (preferably a physician who specializes indiseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearing aid.Licensed physicians who specialize in diseases of the earare often referred to as otolaryngologists, otologists orotorhinolaryngologists. The purpose of medical evaluationis to assure that all medically treatable conditions that51

may affect hearing are identified and treated before thehearing aid is purchased.Following the medical evaluation, the physician will giveyou a written statement that states that your hearing losshas been medically evaluated and that you may beconsidered a candidate for a hearing aid. The physicianwill refer you to an audiologist or a hearing aid dispenser,as appropriate, for a hearing aid evaluation. The audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct ahearing aid evaluation to assess your ability to hear withand without a hearing aid. The hearing aid evaluation willenable the audiologist or dispenser to select and fit ahearing aid to your individual needs. If you have reservations about your ability to adapt toamplification, you should inquire about the availability ofa trial-rental or purchase-option program. Many hearingaid dispensers now offer programs that permit you towear a hearing aid for a period of time for a nominal feeafter which you may decide if you want to purchase thehearing aid.52

Federal law restricts the sale of hearing aids to thoseindividuals who have obtained a medical evaluation froma licensed physician. Federal law permits a fully informedadult to sign a waiver statement declining the medicalevaluation for religious or personal beliefs that precludeconsultation with a physician. The exercise of such awaiver is not in your best health interest and its use isstrongly discouraged.Children with Hearing LossIn addition to seeing a physician for a medical evaluation,a child with a hearing loss should be directed to anaudiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation since hearingloss may cause problems in language development andthe educational and social growth of a child. Anaudiologist is qualified by training and experience to assistin the evaluation and rehabilitation of a child with ahearing loss.53
