Casting a Spellon Costumes“I loved working on this film somuch because I was given a taskof creating a world that is part ofa story you haven’t seen before.The challenges were great, butI was blessed with a great team.They were just a dream.”Enter the fantasy world of Maleficent: Mistressof Evil in theaters October 18th.In a fantasy adventure film, the costume designer’s vision is especially critical,not to mention challenging. Award-winning costume designer, Ellen Mirojnicktalks with us about her role in creating the magic in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.Q: HOW DOES COSTUME DESIGNSUPPORT STORY ANDCHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?A: My role is to bring the charactersto life visually. When I read a script,I first envision images. Workingwith the director, the actors andall the different artists involvedin filmmaking, we conceive atheme about the overarching filmvision. I then begin to apply thatvision to the costume designs toshow how the characters feel, howthey move through the story andhow they change. Costuming isabout subtly, subliminally conveyingthe characters’ emotions andpersonalities to the audienceto heighten their understanding.— Ellen Mirojnick, Costume DesignerQ: HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOURCREATIVE WORK ON THIS FILM?A: I researched art from manydifferent eras includingcontemporary fashion. Then, Icreated the look book withimages for all the characters ineach of the film segments. Fromit, the director and other film artistscould see what I was envisioning.The look book becomes afoundation and valuable tool forthe costume department. But likeevery creative process, thingsevolve and change. Nothing isset in stone. Sometimes, somethingdoesn’t work out as well as youthought, so you have to adjust.Q: CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE?A: I chose a range of fabrics andstones for Queen Ingrith, andeveryone was very happy withthem, but then when we realizedMichelle Pfeiffer was playing therole, we needed to change a fewthings to work with her coloring.We then recognized that thefabrics selected for King Johndidn’t work. So, all those King Johnfabrications had to change. Youhave to keep the actor in mindwhen you’re making your designand fabrication choices.Q: HOW ARE THE PERSONALITIESOF THE THREE MAIN FEMALECHARACTERS EXPRESSED INTHEIR COSTUMES?Q: WHERE DID YOU FIND THEKINDS OF UNIQUE FABRICS,SHOES AND ACCESSORIESYOU NEEDED?A: The Queen is very regal, so herA: We constructed everything—costumes and accessories usea lot of jewelry and gem stones tosignify enormous wealth and greed.Aurora’s costumes have a delicate,hand-crafted look as if they’remade by the Fairies from naturalmaterials. Maleficent is stillMaleficent—but she too grows inher own way. You’ll have to see thefilm to see how her costumesreflect those changes.from shoes to headwear. We hadan extraordinary jewelry maker;there was a textile artist who wasbrilliant at taking ordinary basicfabric—like cotton—and turningit into something you’ve neverseen before. We had experts indying, distressing and aging fabric,making footwear, headwear andeven trim.
