EditorialDEMA and AntibesIs enough enough?Apologies for the late arrival ofUwP45 but I’ve just got back fromexhibiting at DEMA in Las Vegas andAntibes in the south of France. Bothwere very pleasant events but ratherthan include details of them in thisissue I’d like to point you to someexcellent coverage atAn interesting situation wasbrought home to me recently whenI tried to burn an HD footage videoabout Shooting Magic Filters ontoDVD. Imagine my surprise whenI found out that I had to compress/downgrade the image qualityslightly in order for it to fit onto aconventional DVD. I say conventionalreferring to the universally popularsingle sided DVDs rather than thedouble sided or Blu-Ray discs withtheir increased capacity because thelatter two, whilst capable of storingmuch more information, are not atall popular. It seems that the generalpublic can see no reason to upgradetheir DVD players and computermanufacturers have not fullyembraced Blu-Ray.In the old days there was adistinct advantage with DVDs overVHS tapes. The quality was visuallymuch better, the size smaller and theloss-less copying capability quitegroundbreaking so there was analmost universal takeup. Now it seems that the generalpublic are staying put for the timebeing and I suspect that the preferredmethod of video delivery in the futurewill be online rather than on tal capabilityThe old chestnut used to be “Willdigital ever be as good as film?” butnow, with the advent of cameras suchas the Nikon D3 and D700, we havea situation where digital cameras areeasily outperforming film, certainly interms of high ISO capability. This, inturn, should release a whole new setof images, never practically possiblebefore, of , for instance, deeperwrecks in sharper detail. I say wrecksbecause they are of particular interestto me but what is so exciting aboutunderwater photography at present ishow these new capabilities are beingembraced and will be used to producea whole new genre.45/ Please contribute tothe contributorsAt the risk of sounding repetitive,UwP can only be downloaded for freebecause the contributors don’t ask forany payment. If you feel you have benefitedfrom or simply enjoyed the contentsof UwP why not make a donationwhich will be divided pro rataamongst the contributors. Sea Shepherd Operation MusashiThe Sea Shepherd ConservationSociety has announced its fifthAntarctic Whale Defense Campaign tothe Southern Oceans to defend whalesfrom the Japanese whaling fleet. Thisyear’s campaign has been namedOperation Musashi in reference tothe legendary Japanese strategist,Miyamoto Musashi (1584-1645)known as a great samurai warrior, strategist and tactician and a personalrole model and hero to Captain PaulWatson, Founder and President of SeaShepherd.“We intend to sink the Japanesefleet economically,” said Captain PaulWatson. “Our strategy is to preventwhales from being killed, to force theJapanese whalers to spend money onfuel without killing whales. We willonce again intervene against illegalJapanese whaling and once again wewww.uwpmag.comintend to save the lives of as manywhales as we can with the resourcesavailable to us. We have been thecause of the Japanese whaling fleetlosing profits for three years in a row.We intend to make it a fourth year ofred ink for the whaler’s books.”The Japanese whaling fleet willdepart from Japan next month. TheSea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin willalso depart at the end of Novemberfrom Brisbane, Australia. TheJapanese fleet and the Steve Irwinshould arrive in the Southern OceanWhale Sanctuary around the sametime. Sea Shepherd will not dependon the government of Australia to helpthe whales.www.seashepherd.orgGreenpeaceSurrenders to theJapanese WhalingFleetGreenpeace has officiallyannounced that they will not besending a ship to the Southern Oceansto oppose whaling by the JapaneseWhaling fleet. This means that SeaShepherd will be alone in our highseas opposition to illegal Japanesewhaling operations when the whalingseason opens in a month.“As a Greenpeace co-founder, Iam deeply offended that Greenpeacehas been raising millions of dollarsin the name of defending whales allyear and now two weeks before theJapanese whaling fleet is scheduledto depart, they announce they will notbe going,” said Captain Paul Watson.“In my opinion they collected fundsunder false pretenses and now theyhave abandoned the whales. Shame onthem.”www.greenpeace.orgSeatool NikonD300 housingSmall and light enoughto hand carry on aircraft, theSeatool ND300 offers exceptionalunderwater balance. All camera controls are placedwithin easy reach, even for diverswith small hands. the limited depth of underwater welding. Welding equipment transformed from manual welding to underwater automatic welding. The efficient and low-cost underwater welding was achieved[7]. In order to study the automatic welding technology under larger deep-water environment, the underwater automatic welding system was designed in this paper. The
