English4 Safety PrecautionsProtect the battery from rain and damp – do notimmerse it in fluids.4 Safety Precautions4.1Warning SignsObserve battery’s specified temperature range.Meanings of warning signs and labels on the saw, batteryand charger:Observe safety notices and take the necessaryprecautions.4.2Read, understand and save the instructionmanual.Intended UseThe STIHL MSA 120 C and MSA 140 C chainsaws aredesigned for cutting wood, limbing and felling small diametertrees and maintaining garden trees.Do not use the chainsaw in the rain.Wear safety glasses and a hard hat.The STIHL AK battery supplies power to the saw.The STIHL AL 101 charger recharges the STIHL AK battery.WARNINGObserve safety notices on kickback and take thenecessary precautions. Batteries and chargers not explicitly approved for the sawby STIHL may cause a fire or explosion. This can result inserious or fatal injuries and damage to property. Use the saw with a STIHL AK battery.Always remove the battery during work breaks,transport, storage, maintenance or repairs. Recharge the STIHL AK battery with aSTIHL AL 101, AL 300 or AL 500 charger.Protect saw and charger from rain anddampness. Using the saw, battery or the charger for purposes forwhich they were not designed may result in serious or fatalinjuries, and damage to property may occur. English4 Safety Precautions Read, understand and save the instructionmanual. If you pass the saw, battery and charger on to anotherperson: Always give them the instruction manual. Make sure the user meets the following requirements:– The user must be rested.– The user must be in good physicalcondition and mental health to operateand work with the saw, battery andcharger. If the user’s physical, sensoryor mental ability is restricted, he or shemay work only under the supervision ofor as instructed by a responsibleperson.– The user is able to recognize and assess the risksinvolved in using the chainsaw, battery and charger.– The user must be of legal age or is beingtrained in a trade under supervision inaccordance with national rules andregulations.– The user has received instruction from aSTIHL servicing dealer or otherexperienced user before working withthe chainsaw and using the charger forthe first time.4.4Clothing and EquipmentWARNING Long hair can become entangled in the saw duringoperation. This can result in serious injuries. Tie up and confine long hair so that it cannot beentangled in the saw. Objects can be thrown through the air at high speedduring operation. This can result in personal injury. Wear snug-fitting safety glasses. Suitableglasses that have been tested and labeledin accordance with EN 166 or nationalstandards are available from retailers. STIHL recommends that you wear a face shield. Wear a long-sleeved, snug-fitting upper garment. Falling objects can cause head injuries. If there is a danger of falling objects duringoperation: Wear a safety hard hat. Dust can be whipped up during operation: Whipped updust can damage the respiratory passages and causeallergic reactions. Wear a respirator. Inappropriate clothing can snag on wood, brush or thesaw. Not wearing personal protective equipment mayresult in serious injury. Wear snug-fitting clothing. Do not wear a scarf or jewelry.– The user must not be under the influence of alcohol,medication or drugs. If the user is working with a chainsaw for the first time:Practice cutting logs on a sawhorse or other support. English4 Safety Precautions The user can come into contact with the rotating sawchain during operation. This can result in serious injuries. Wear long trousers of the appropriate cut-retardantclass. The user can be cut by the wood during operation. Theuser can come into contact with the saw chain duringcleaning and maintenance work. This can result inpersonal injury. Wear work gloves made of durable material. Wearing unsuitable footwear may cause you to slip orstumble. Contact with the rotating saw chain can result incuts. This can result in personal injury. Wear chainsaw boots with cut retardant inlays.4.54.5.1Work Area and SurroundingsChainsawWARNING Bystanders, children and animals are not aware of thedangers of the chainsaw or thrown objects. Innocentbystanders, children and animals may be seriously injuredand damage to property may occur. Keep bystanders, children and animals away from thework area. Do not leave the chainsaw unattended. Make sure that children cannot play with the chainsaw. The saw is not waterproof. Working in the rain or a damplocation may result in an electric shock. This can result ininjuries to the user and may damage the chainsaw. Do not work in the rain or a damp location. Electrical components of the chainsaw can producesparks. Sparks may cause a fire or an explosion in aneasily combustible or explosive environment. This canresult in serious or fatal injuries and damage to property. Do not work in an easily combustible or explosiveenvironment.4.5.2BatteryWARNING Bystanders, children and animals cannot recognize orassess the dangers of the battery. Innocent children,bystanders and animals may be seriously injured. Keep children, bystanders and animals away from thework area. Do not leave the battery unattended. Make sure that children cannot play with the battery. The battery is not protected against all ambientconditions. If the battery is exposed to certain ambientconditions, it may catch fire or explode. This can result inserious injuries and damage to property. Protect battery from heat and fire. Do not throw the battery into a fire. Use and store the battery at temperaturesbetween -10 C and 50 C. Protect the battery from rain and damp – donot immerse it in fluids. Keep battery away from metallic objects. Do not expose battery to high pressure. Do not expose battery to microwaves. English4 Safety Precautions4.5.3ChargerWARNING Innocent children, bystanders and animals are not awareof and cannot assess the dangers of a charger or electriccurrent. Innocent children, bystanders and animals maybe seriously injured. Keep children, bystanders and animalsaway from the work area. Do not leave the charger unattended. Make sure that children cannot play withthe charger. The charger is not waterproof. Working in the rain or adamp location may result in an electric shock. This canresult in injuries to the user and may damage the charger. Do not operate it in the rain or a damplocation.4.6Safe Condition4.6.1 ChainsawThe chainsaw is in a safe condition if the following points areobserved:– The saw is not damaged.– The saw is clean and dry.– The chain catcher is not damaged.– Chain brake is operating properly.– The controls function properly and have not beenmodified.– Chain lubrication is operating properly.– Wear marks on chain sprocket are not deeper than 0.5mm.– A combination of guide bar and saw chain recommendedin this instruction manual is mounted.– The guide bar and chain are properly mounted.– The chain is properly tensioned. The charger is not protected against all ambientconditions. If the charger is exposed to certain ambientconditions, it may catch fire or explode. This can result inserious injuries and damage to property. Operate the charger in a dry place, indoors only. Do not operate the charger in an easily combustible orexplosive environment. Do not operate the charger on an easily combustiblesurface. Use and store the charger at a temperaturebetween 5 C and 40 C. Persons may trip over the connecting cable. This canresult in injuries and may damage the charger. Lay the connecting cable flat on the floor.– Only original STIHL accessories designed for this saw arefitted.– Accessories are properly mounted.– The oil tank is closed.WARNING If components do not comply with safety requirements,they will no longer function properly and safety devicesmay be rendered inoperative. This can result in serious orfatal injuries. Work only with an undamaged chainsaw. If the saw is dirty or wet: Clean the saw and allow it todry. Work only with an undamaged chain catcher. Never modify your chainsaw. Exception: Mounting acombination of guide bar and saw chain recommendedin this instruction manual.0458-716-0121-C9

English4 Safety Precautions If the controls do not function properly: Do not use yoursaw. Only fit original STIHL accessories designed for thissaw model. Mount the guide bar and chain as described in thisinstruction manual. Mount accessories as described in this instructionmanual or the instructions supplied with the accessory.4.6.3The saw chain is in a safe condition if the following pointsare observed:– Chain is not damaged.– Chain is properly sharpened.– The service marks on the cutters are still visible.WARNING Never insert objects in the saw’s openings. If you have any queries: Contact your STIHL servicingdealer for assistance.4.6.2Guide BarThe guide bar is in a safe condition if the following points areobserved:– Guide bar is not damaged.– Guide bar is not deformed.Saw Chain If components do not comply with safety requirements,they will no longer function properly and safety devicesmay be rendered inoperative. This can result in serious orfatal injuries. Work only with an undamaged saw chain. Sharpen the chain properly. If you have any queries: Contact your STIHL servicingdealer for assistance.– The minimum groove depth is maintained, @ 20.3.4.6.4– Bar rails are free from burrs.The battery is in a safe condition if the following points areobserved:– Bar groove is not pinched or splayed.WARNING If the guide bar is not in a safe condition, it can no longersupport and guide the saw chain properly. The rotatingsaw chain can jump off the guide bar. This can result inserious or fatal injuries. Work only with an undamaged guide bar. If the groove depth is less than the minimum depth:Mount a new guide bar. Deburr the guide bar every week. If you have any queries: Contact your STIHL servicingdealer.Battery– Battery is undamaged.– Battery is clean and dry.– Battery functions properly and has not been modified.WARNING A battery that is not in a safe condition cannot operatesafely. This can result in serious injuries. Never work with a damaged battery. Never attempt to charge a damaged or defectivebattery. If the battery is dirty or wet: Clean the battery and allowit to dry. Never attempt to modify the battery. Never insert objects in the battery’s openings.100458-716-0121-C

English4 Safety Precautions Never bridge the battery's contacts with metallic objects(short circuit). Do not open the battery. Fluid may escape from a damaged battery.
