19962000200420082012ANNUAL ng pridefor 40 years.

As we leave 2012, about to embarkon our 40th year as the Gay Allianceof the Genesee Valley, we do soin celebration of your contributions and thewonderful accomplishments achieved to sustainour fine organization.2012 brought us a few changes at the GayAlliance, starting with a fond farewell to SueCowell who left her ED post to help re-electLouise Slaughter. We can’t thank Sue enoughfor her many years of devotion to the GayAlliance. We soon welcomed Anne Wakeman asInterim ED. During her tenure the Gay Allianceprogram leaders created a nationally recognizedintergenerational program, as well as transferringthe records of the Helping People with AIDSorganization to the Smithsonian Museum. Thetransfer was made possible through three yearsof diligent work from the Records and ArchivesGrant interns. In October, we hired a formerinterim ED, Joanne Giuffrida, as our BusinessManager in a part-time capacity to help usmanage operations and maintain efficienciesas we focus on our leadership strategy for thefuture.Even though we raised over 50,000 at theend of 2011 during our first donor sponsored 25,000 Challenge Grant, we still entered 2012with a deficit of 15,638. We were also facinganother year of shrinking grant support andsadly had to reduce staff to three full-time andtwo part-time positions, even though demandcontinues to grow for our community education, youth and senior programs. On a happier note, we have much to be proudof as we continue to achieve success as anorganization and experience unparalleled civilrights changes as a community.s 7HAT AN AMAZING VICTORY AND HISTORICALevent we all experienced last summer withour right to marry!s 4HE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF The EmptyCloset – that’s 40 years of New York’soldest LGBT newspaper – was transferredfor archival storage to the Smithsonian onNovember 30, 2012.s )N THE 0RESIDENT STATED THAT HE NOlonger supported DOMA and sometime earlyin 2013 the United States Supreme Court willhear a case that may recognize LGBT peopleas a protected class. We continue to thank the Gay Alliance leaders, dedicated board trustees, members andvolunteers along with our community leaderswho have participated in every step of thesecourageous transformational changes.During the last two months, we as Co-Presidentsof the Board have met with over twentycommunity leaders to discuss the future of theGay Alliance and how we can most effectivelyserve the needs of the LGBT community. Weexpect to announce our vision in early February,a time when we will be fiscally stable, enablingus to continue to attract the visionary leadershipnecessary to meet the needs and aspirations forthe current generation and generations to come.On a final note, as we look back on 2012 andthe struggles and triumphs of years past, wehope you’ll join us in 2013 as we turn forty andbecome even more fabulous! Please participatein our year long fundraising celebration andstay tuned for the Fall premiere of Shouldersto Stand On, a documentary showcasing ourpioneers and our community, made possiblewith your generous contributions and support.Emily JonesW.
