AIMSweb Default Cut Scores Explainedcompleted a complex researchproject using data from 20states to predict probabilitiesof success on state tests fromscores on AIMSweb measures. The study used data for bothbased on this body of research on R-CBM and M-CAP, AIMSwebresearchers were also able to select default cut scores for ReadingMaze, M-COMP, Written Expression, and Spelling. When theresearchers reviewed the percentile values of the R-CBM and M-CAP cutscores on the new National Norms, they were struck by the high levelof consistency of the percentiles across grades, benchmark periods, andmeasures. For both measures, the 80% Success Probability score wasconsistently close to the 45th percentile and the 50% Success Probabilityscore was consistently near the 15th percentile. For this reason, AIMSwebconcluded that it would be reasonable to use those percentile values to setdefault cut scores for other measures of reading, language arts, and math.(The early literacy measures, TEL and TEN, were handled differently, asdescribed in the next section.)typical state test in reading orFor Maze, M-COMP, Written Expression, and Spelling, the default cut scoresshould not be interpreted as predictors of state test success, because they arenot based on direct empirical evidence involving scores on those measures. The rationale for these cut scores is that if the lowest-scoring 15% of thenational student population has consistently been found to be at severe riskin reading and math, and the lowest-scoring 45% at moderate risk, then it isreasonable to use those percentages as a guide to the number of studentswho should be identified as at-risk when using other measures. This methodhas the benefit of being grounded in empirical research, rather than usingtheoretical or arbitrary percentile cutoffs.math. These cut scores are nowAIMSweb Default Cut Scores for TEL and TENincluded as the optional defaultThe default cut scores for the Test of Early Literacy (TEL) and Test of EarlyNumeracy (TEN) measures were established in a similar way, but using adifferent criterion for success. Silberglitt (2001) did a study of the relationshipof AIMSweb TEL scores to reading success in Grade 2 as measured byadequate R-CBM performance. He identified the raw scores on LetterSound Fluency (by grade and period) that predicted success, and these areconsistently close to the 35th percentile on the new AIMSweb NationalNorms. That percentile value is used for the higher cut score on the TEL andTEN measures; the lower cut score is set at the 15th percentile, consistentwith its location for the other AIMSweb measures.R-CBM and M-CAP at grades1 (or 2) through 8 to derive cutscores associated with 50% and80% probability of passing thecut scores in AIMSweb reports. For detailed information, or furtherquestions, please refer to the StatePrediction User’s Guide, or contact AIMSwebSupport at 866.313.6194, option 1, or byemail at aimswebsupport@pearson.com.You can read further about this research if you log in to AIMSweb, go to theyellow “Downloads” tab, “Training” subtab, and at the bottom, review theState Prediction User’s Guide. From this research, AIMSweb recently released(for Fall 2011) new “AIMSweb Default” cut scores and targets. These arenow, by default, pre-loaded into AIMSweb reports and are available for everycustomer, in addition to whatever other local targets or cut scores you mayhave decided to customize within your account. The following pages include a static table of the 2011–2012 AIMSwebDefault Cut Scores for your easy reference.866.313.6194 AIMSweb.comCopyright 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliate(s).
