YOUNG HARRIS COLLEGE HISTORYBrief History of Young Harris CollegeYoung Harris College is a private baccalaureate and master’s degree-granting institution located in thebeautiful mountains of North Georgia. Founded in 1886 and historically affiliated with The United MethodistChurch, Young Harris College educates, inspires and empowers students through an education that purposefully integrates the liberal arts and professional studies. The College has four academic divisions: Fine Arts;Humanities; Mathematics, Science and Technology; and Professional Studies. More than 1,400 students areenrolled in its residential and Early College programs. The College is an active member of the NCAA Division IIand remains a fierce competitor in the prestigious Peach Belt Conference. Young Harris College provides anintimate setting that allows students and faculty to work closely, forging nurturing relationships and strongbonds that endure well past graduation. The College features innovative academic programs, state-of-the-artfacilities, competitive athletics and a plethora of student leadership opportunities. With an average class sizeof 18, YHC students don’t get lost in the crowd. Widespread opportunities exist in the classroom, on the field,on stage and in the community so that students can build their skills, experience and résumé. YHC offersmore than 30 baccalaureate programs and more than 20 minors, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching.Popular baccalaureate degree programs include Business & Public Policy, Psychology, Biology, Interdisciplinary Studies and Communication Studies. In each academic program, opportunities for undergraduate research abound, and YHC is proud to host an annual Undergraduate Research Day. The College aims to produce well-rounded students who can connect the dots between multiple ideas, solve problems creatively andcommunicate effectively. Students graduate with versatile skills and employable attributes that will helpthem adapt to a changing world. Recently, Young Harris College renewed its focus on preparing students forwhat comes next—whether that is a career, graduate or professional school, public service, or any of amyriad of pathways. This is not something that occurs only in a student’s senior year—it’s something thatbegins during the College’s summer pre-orientation session before the first semester and continues throughout a student’s time in the Enchanted Valley. The College is working on implementing aspects of CompleteCollege America’s “Purpose First” strategy to help students clarify their goals and to support their persistenceand success. YHC students are encouraged to get involved and make the most of their college experience byexploring all that is going on around campus. Students have the opportunity to branch out, participate in service and social activities, and meet other students through more than 60 campus organizations.
