It is a self-paced program which encouragesself-motivation and self-esteem. We are also willing and eager to teach any skills to a Scout or adult (astime permits) who may want to know for either advancement purposes or merely personal curiosity. Inorder to better serve your Scout’s individual needs, please bring their Scout Handbook on Mondaymorning so we can record his or her current information on our tracking sheets. Trail to First Class isalso a great place for leaders to assist by volunteering to teach a skill in which they are proficient.Contact the Area Director to volunteer. Please note that completion of all the lessons at Trail to First Class does not automatically grant theScout the First Class Rank. Troop-level activities such as Scoutmaster conferences and boards of revieware needed in order to receive each rank. The staff does not sign off on the requirements in a Scout’s Handbook. In-Camp ProgramFunnerdaySince every day at camp is fun, Friday afternoon is known as Funnerday which is an entire afternoon offun games and activities to help Scouts get the most out of their camp experience. We believe thatcamp should not only be about merit badges, but also a chance to build character and make memoriesthat Scouts can take home and remember throughout their lives. A Scout grows through experiences.Funnerday activities include both competitive and non-competitive events.Cardboard Boat RegattaUnits will have the opportunity to build a fully functional boat that can hold one or more Scouts out ofnothing but cardboard and duct tape. Boats will be judged on the boat design, and how well it floats (orhow well it sinks – an entertaining sinking is sometimes better than a good float). Cardboard will beavailable in the cage behind the pool, but each unit must supply its own duct tape. Duct tape may alsobe purchased at the Trading Post. Designs may be made before camp but the entire boat must beconstructed at camp.Scoutmaster Belly Flop ExpositionScoutmasters don’t often get a chance to really shine at Boy Scout camp, but in this case they will havethe chance to shine red, anyway. During the Scoutmaster Belly Flop Exhibition, Scoutmasters willmatch wits and courage to prove that they are the toughest in camp. They will be scored on severalcriteria including (but not limited to) style of dive, horizontal entry, redness of the belly, and generalattitude. Bring the whole gang and cheer them on as they face the pain of competition.Blast Car DerbyWe will provide the launcher, track, and CO2 cartridges. Each troop or patrol builds its own Blast Car(available at The Scout Shop before Camp, or at the Trading Post during Camp.) Competitions will beheld during Funnerday to determine the fastest, most creative, and most llama-like car. Cars may bebuilt during your week at Camp, or you may bring them to Camp ready to race! Please note we do nothave woodworking tools available at Camp.Senior Patrol Leader and Scoutmaster Tomahawk ThrowHave your SPL and SM team up to demonstrate their wild west skills during Funnerday.Hiking TrailsCamp Lawton sits among some of the greatest hiking trains in Southern Arizona. You and your unitshould consider taking advantage of this opportunity.Palisades TrailThe Palisades Trail was the original route up the mountain for the first Scouts attending camp in 1921.With the help of mules, they hiked the length of the telephone line that is since defunct up throughcamp to the Palisades Ranger station just to our north. With the construction of the road, Scouts no7

longer need to use it to get to and from camp, but it is an excellent hike for interested troops. Sometroops even choose to hike up overnight from Tucson on Saturday getting into camp at the regularSunday time. For regular day hikes from camp, the trailhead is about a quarter mile down OrganizationRidge Road on the right.Bigelow TrailThe Bigelow Trail is our most popular trail as it quickly and fairly easily takes you to some veryimpressive views. It is about 2 miles round trip and gains an elevation of 1000 ft. The area surroundingthe radio towers is open but the towers cannot be climbed. The parking lot area is an excellent place tosee a sunset (usually occurring around 7:30 PM during the summer). The trail also splits about 2/3 ofthe way up leading to the Butterfly Trail (an advanced loop) and to Mt. Kellogg (easier and very nicefrom which to watch the sunrise).Showers PointShower’s Point is accessible up to the Shower’s Point campground road and then up the dirt road abouta mile. It’s the shortest and easiest trail and leads to an impressive rock outcropping. However, climbingthat rock outcropping is strictly prohibited. It is extremely dangerous and without a certified climbinginstructor, the rock is off limits to any Scout group.Eagle TrailJoin one of our staff members early one morning for an inspirational hike along the Eagle Trail. The staffmember leading the hike will take Scouts and Scouters along the trail to Scouting’s highest rank – theEagle! Whether you are an Eagle, or have just begun your climb, this hike will be a memorableexperience.Night-Eye CoursesBuddies, patrols, and units can test their orienteering skills anytime on one of our long distance compasscourses designed for both day and night use. Course guides and preparation for the courses can beobtained at Outdoor Skills.Campfire ProgramsThe campfires are often among the most memorable events for Scouts and Scouters. Sunday night isour staff campfire where our staff will entertain you with skits and songs to have you rolling in theaisles or at least rolling your eyes. Campers will have the opportunity on Friday night to showcase alloff their talents.Penguin SwimWake-up right with a jump in the pool at 6 AM! The frigid early morning air nearly makes the almost 70degree water feel warm in comparison and challenges you and your Scouts to brave their anxieties andface the cold. Attend three times over the week, and you can earn the patch and call yourself a truePenguin Swimmer.8

Order of the Arrow DayThe Order of the Arrow is Scouting’s National Honor Society. All members of the OA are encouraged tobring their sashes and wear them on Thursday.Has it been 10 months since you became an Ordeal member in the OA? As such, our hope is to expand andimprove this tradition and use it to encourage participation in camp by individuals and units. Each year a Scout attends Camp Lawton, he is eligible for a new rank in our camp honor society. Byparticipating in the camp program and attending service projects, a Scout can progress through theranks of Hunter, Warrior, Medicine Man, Chief, and Elder and be recognized at a special ceremony atthe end of the week.
