ARTISTS’ STATEMENTIgor Stranvinsky: The Rite of SpringRadhe Radhe: Rites of HoliICE had the privilege of premiering Vijay Iyer and PrashantBhargava’s Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi during The Rite ofSpring’s 100th anniversary year. The power, color, and drama ofStravinsky’s Rite was on our mind that year, but ICE is a smallgroup of soloists dedicated to the music of our time; after ahundred years, even Stravinsky’s groundbreaking work thatfanned the flames of the most radical art of the 20th centurycan’t be described as “new.” And the massive orchestra thatStravinsky’s Rite demands would require us to clone a lot of ICEplayers, and possibly break the stage. For the anniversary, Vijayand Prashant’s masterfully contemporary response to The Ritecaptured the spirit of that piece in a way that I think Stravinskywould have understood. My dear friend and collaborator Prashant Bhargava passed awaysuddenly in 2015. Here are our updated joint notes about thisproject, which was his last major work. Tonight’s performance isdedicated to him. – V.I.Still, The Rite lives with us. Its spiky dances, propulsive rhythms, and eerie textures are embedded in our ears. It was the piecethat inspired most of us in ICE to dive deep into the study of20th-century music, which drove us to want to create andchampion the music of the 21st century. We needed a Ritethat would show off ICE’s soloists, would honor Stravinsky’simposing piece, and compliment the freshness of Vijay andPrashant’s work. So three years later, we’re excited to presentthe premiere of The Rite of Spring for you tonight, beautifullyarranged by longtime collaborator Cliff Colnot. It wascommissioned by ICE in memory of Prashant Bhargava whowas admired and beloved by the members of ICE.—Joshua Rubin6PRASHANT BHARGAVA AND CRAIG MARSDENPROGRAM NOTEHoli is known around the world as a joyful, chaotic and colorfulcelebration of springtime in India. When we were invited torespond to Stravinsky’s own famously chaotic work aboutspringtime, we were intrigued by the possible connectionwith Holi. This festival provides an occasion to reconsider theaspects of ritual and transformation represented in Le Sacré duPrintemps. In early conversations, we realized that we were interested lessin an artistic fantasy of pagan sacrifice than in the lived and feltreality of individuals on the brink of change: the significanceof myth in earthly life as a living heritage. Our attention turnedto the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, India, the mythical homeof Krishna, the Hindu deity whose youthful flirtations with hisbeloved Radha and her friends form one of the narratives forthe holiday. According to one story, the young, dark-skinnedgod, annoyed that Radha was so fair, sneaks up on her and her7

friends, surprising the girls with showers of colored powder, perhaps evening the score.Whether a playful strategy for overcoming racial difference,or a moment of interplay of gender and power, or simply theenactment of a youthful fantasy, this particular impulsive act isnow the central, cathartic ritual of Holi. On that day everyonebecomes Krishna and Radha (or fondly Radhe); all participantsthrow color and get color thrown at them. A pulsing desireto unite with the goddess sends a city into a feverish state ofspinning and yearning. Everyone enters a state of uninhibited, ecstatic freedom that remains hidden for the rest of the year.PRASHANT BHARGAVA AND CRAIG MARSDENIn March 2011, Prashant and his film crew traveled to Mathuraand the surrounding region, where Holi celebrations last notone day and night, but eight. The cameras captured membersof a community in the heightened throes of transformation, turning the seasons of their own lives. Temples fill withdevotees, dancing without inhibition, pushing and shovingto receive blessings. Gangs of teenagers loiter on cornerswith buckets of colorful liquid and powder waiting to dousethose who pass by. Men, high on intoxicating spirits, make apilgrimage to Radha’s village dressed in vibrant garb from theregion of Krishna’s playground and equipped with ceremonialshields; as the men boisterously taunt with sexually provocativechants, women await armed with long sticks ready to beatthem. Purging fires, expressions of devoutness, and feats ofausterity offer a nighttime counterpoint to the baudy daytimerevels.8Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi is a journey of devotion for thegoddess Radha. In this project, we answer back to the Sacréscore and ballet with a new work for chamber ensemble andfilm. International Contemporary Ensemble performs a suitefor winds, strings, percussion, pianos, and electronics, in livecounterpoint with cinematic episodes compiled from the Holifootage and from a staged depiction of Radha’s encounter withKrishna. The temporalities that structure the score come notonly from the rhythms of the rituals and dances that you seeonscreen, but also from the experiences of longing, catharsis, and transcendence that this celebration brings. The result isalso a ballet of sorts: a performative encounter between livemusic and film, between lived experience and myth, the selfand the transformed self, winter and spring.—Vijay Iyer & Prashant BhargavaMUSICVIJAY IYER, piano, composerComposer-pianist Vijay Iyer was voted DownBeat Magazine’sJazz Artist of the Year for 2012, 2015, and 2016. Sea ice is frozen, floating seawater, while land ice (called glaciers or ice sheets) is ice that’s accumulated over time on land.
