Course Requirements and ExpectationsClass ParticipationClass discussion and participation are extremely important given the nature of this course. Sincethis class is dependent upon class participation, it is important that you attend every class. It isexpected, however, that all students will have read the material and will be prepared to discussthe material in class. Based on the readings, presentations and experiential activities, you areexpected to assume an active role in this course. From time to time you may be asked tofacilitate small group activities.AttendanceClass attendance will not be taken and students will not receive any credit for attending class.E-mailAll students should have an active SIU e-mail account no later than the first day of the course(Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016). I will only use your SIU email address to correspond by email. Itis also the responsibility of the student to check their SIU e-mail account at least three times aweek (Monday thru Sunday) and follow directions posted on D2L and e-mails sent by theinstructor. Please notify the instructor as soon as possible if you are not receiving emails.Grades and ExpectationsGrades will be assigned based on your performance on written assignments, oral presentations,and examinations. Please keep a copy of your class paper(s) on disk/thumb or in a cloud (e.g.Dropbox or Google Docs). Although this instructor has never lost a paper, this will protectagainst papers that are misplaced. It is important that you check your grade every week, whichwill ensure accuracy.Late AssignmentsUnless otherwise indicated, ALL assignments will be accepted only through the Desire to Learn(D2L) course website. There will be a specific drop box for each assignment. Please pay closeattention to which Dropbox your assignment is uploaded to. Credit will only be given forassignments that are in the correct drop box. If your assignment is uploaded to the incorrectdrop box, you will not receive credit for that assignment. All students are required to check D2Lto make sure your assignment is uploaded before the deadline date for that particular assignment.Please see the instructor before assignment due date for extension on possible late assignments.ALL assignments turned in late (i.e., after the deadline date and time) without priorapproval from the Instructor, will start with an 80% for that particular assignment. Morespecifically, unless otherwise indicated, assignments are late if not posted on D2L by 9:35am ofthe due date. No credit will be given for assignments turned in later than 24 hours of thedue date without prior approval from the professor. Cell PhonesCell phones and other electronic devices not used for note taking must be turned off and putaway during all examinations. Students who use their cellphones during these times will beasked to turn in their exam at that time and leave the class. No exceptions.Course Materials and Assignments: VITAL InformationCourse materials can be found under HCM360-001 on D2L (online.siu.edu). All assignmentswill be posted in the "Assignments" folder in the Content Browser. To submit your assignments,you must upload your document to the appropriate Dropbox. You can access the list of dropboxes on D2L by clicking on "Activities" (which is located on the maroon banner at the top ofthe class page) and then selecting "Assignments". Again, credit will only be given forassignments that are uploaded to the correct drop box. No credit will be given if yourassignment is uploaded to the incorrect Dropbox.All of your assignments MUST be uploaded as a Word document or a Rich text format (RTF).They MUST have one of the following file extensions: .doc, .docx, or .rtf and your name(s)needs to be within the document itself. No exceptions. This is to ensure that your assignmentscan be opened and graded.All assignments will be due on Thursdays by 9:35am. Please review the specific dates thatassignments are due under the "Class assignments and exams" section of this syllabus as well asthe "Schedule of topics and assignments" section. You should consult with us if you are uncertain about an issue of academic honesty prior to thesubmission of an assignment or test.If I have evidence of any form of academic dishonesty, I will charge the student with violatingthe Academic Honesty Policy of the University in a report to the Office of Student JudicialAffairs. A student who is found responsible for an act of academic dishonesty will receive afailing grade in the course. Cheating consists of, but is not limited to, looking at anotherstudent’s exam, using external aids (such as books, notes, conversation with others) when takingthe exam, or plagiarizing the work of another person and submitting it as your original work. Nocourse books or materials should be within the student’s view during exams.Emergency Class CancellationIn the event that classes are officially canceled (e.g., snow day, inland hurricane), the followingschedule changes will automatically be in effect: If the day canceled is a day on which an exam has been scheduled, then the exam will begiven on the first day that classes resume. For example, if an exam is scheduled onTuesday, and classes are canceled on Tuesday, the exam will be given on the followingThursday. If the Thursday classes are canceled as well, the exam will be given on theTuesday after that. If the lecture day that immediately precedes the exam is cancelled or if BOTH lecturedays are canceled, the exam will be given on the regularly scheduled day, or on the firstday that classes resume.Emergency ProceduresSouthern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthyenvironment for study and work. The absolute last day that you can withdrawal from a class (which will result in a "W"grade) is Sunday, October 30, 2016.3. A grade of incomplete will be given only under the conditions specified in the UndergraduateCatalog. That is, a grade of incomplete (INC) can only be given if a student has completed morethan HALF of the semester and is PASSING the course. An incomplete exists to help thosestudents who would have passed the course had they been able to continue, but EXTREMEcircumstances exist such that the student cannot continue. To receive a grade for an INC, allcoursework must be completed no later than the last month of the next semester. For example, ifyou received an INC for this course for the fall, you would have no later than May to completethe coursework. If you do not make up the coursework, your INC will become an F.Class Assignments and ExamsHealthcare Systems Project (HSP): Total 30% of final gradeThe Healthcare Systems is a TWO Part project. The first part is the Healthcare SystemsPlan (HSPL) which is worth 10% of your grade. The second part is the Healthcare SystemsPresentation (HSPRE) which is 20% of your grade.Students are required to develop a healthcare systems project that is designed to increaseawareness regarding key issues that can have an impact on quality of care, patientsatisfaction, employee satisfaction, or service delivery. The instructor will leave time afterclass so that students can begin to form groups of no more than eight (5) people and begindiscussing common topics of interest. Students will designate one (1) group member to bethe facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for uploading a document to D2L(Activities Assignments Group Topics) that contains the group members’ names andwhat the group topic is. Groups must identify a topic for the HAPL no later than Thursday,September 8th, 2016 by 9:35AM. The course instructor will review these topics to makesure that they are appropriate and that no topics are duplicated. Groups and topics will befinalized on Tuesday, September 13th, 2016 by 9:35AM. Every person in the group willreceive the same grade for both the HSPL and HSPRE.Part 1: Healthcare Systems Plan ([HSPL] 20% of Final Grade)DUE: Thursday, September 29th by 9:35AMFor the HSPL Worksheet: Content Browser Assignments HSP HSPL WorksheetTo Submit the HSPL Worksheet: Activities Assignments HSPLWorking in the healthcare system involves working collaboratively with other team or groupmembers, so one skill this class will focus on is how to work effectively with team members.Most of the time in the workplace, we cannot select who is on our team Utilize the belowHSPL to help your group structure a plan for the development of your project. Teams and or individuals who do not complete their plan by the stated deadlinewill receive nothing higher than an 80% for the HSPL assignment.Planning a project is a crucial to ensure that the project stays on track and each team memberknows what his or her roles, responsibilities, and deadlines are.
