INDUSTRY HYDRAULIC FLUIDS–FIRE RESISTENTSHELL AUSTRALIA LUBRICANTS PRODUCT DATA GUIDE 2013SHELL IRUS FLUID CSHELL IRUS FLUID CHFC TYPE FIRE-RESISTANT HYDRAULIC FLUIDDESIGNED TO MEET CHALLENGESINDUSTRY HYDRAULIC FLUIDS–FIRE RESISTENTShell Irus Fluid C is an advanced water-glycol fire resistant hydraulic fluid containing powerful additivesto enhance its anti-wear, anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation properties. The water content is approximately40% by weight.PERFORMANCE FEATURESADDITIONAL INFORMATIONFIRE RESISTANT FOR HIGH RISK INSTALLATIONSn As demonstrated in the 7th Luxembourg Report fire resistancetests the product contributes significantly to reduce the fire riskboth in presence of flame and hot surfaces due to fire resistanceproperties.CONTROL OF WATER CONTENTEXCELLENT COMPONENTS AND FLUID DURATIONn Reliable operation especially compared with fluids of oldertechnologies.IMPROVED WEAR PERFORMANCES AGAINSTMINIMUM INDUSTRY STANDARDn As demonstrated in the vane pump testing required by the 7thLuxembourg Report the product offers significantly betteranti-wear performances than the minimum required by thestandard.APPLICATIONSShell Irus Fluid C is particularly suitable for demanding hydraulicapplications where there is a high fire risk, such as those found inthe Mining and Metal Processing industries. In order to reduce the water evaporation Shell Irus Fluid C, as for allthe ISO HFC type of fluids, should be used below 55 C witha suggested maximum temperature of 45 C.COMPATIBILITY AND MISCIBILITYLUBRICATION AND COMPONENT LIFEIn general, water-glycol fluids are less effective bearing lubricantsthan petroleum mineral hydraulic oils, but are entirely satisfactory insystems containing pumps with plain bearings or lightly loaded balland roller bearings. However, in common with other water-basedfluids a reduction in bearing life can be expected. This will normallybe included in the ‘derating’ made by the pump manufacturer.Water content should be controlled within 35% to 45% by weight.Condensate or de-ionized water should be used for any additions, which should be made slowly while the fluid is circulating.CONVERSION FROM OTHER TYPES OF FLUIDSSpecific attention should be given in case of converting to Shell IrusFluid C systems that were previously using lubricants of different typesthan ISO HFC (e.g. mineral oils or ISO HFDU type of products). In such a case it is suggested you seek advice from your Shellrepresentative about the change over procedure you should follow.TYPICAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICSCHARACTERISTICSISO Fluid TypeHFCAppearanceTransparentRedKinematic Viscosity (ASTM D 445)@ –20 C mm2/s@ 0 C mm2/s@ 20 C mm2/s@ 40 C mm2/s187535811247Density @ 15 C kg/m3 (ISO 12185)1059Pour Point C (ISO 3016)–57In order to increase as much as possible the reliability of the systemand reduce its maintenance costs it is important that all componentsare checked with their manufacturer on whether they are suitable/compatible with water glycol products.70These characteristics are typical of current production.
