GETTING YOUR FEET WET IN SCIENCE OF MINDCopyright 1998 by Cara LumenAll rights reserved. This companion piece to "Treatment a la Carte" outlines the basicsof the metaphysical philosophy called Science of Mind andReligious Science. Having spent years with this general philosophyas I moved within the holistic field, finding this church touched medeeply, for it was truly a feeling of "coming home". These were thethings I needed to know when I first found the Church of ReligiousScience. When I found the answers, I put them in this booklet forothers.Cara Lumen, RScPSanta Rosa, CA(Now in Olathe, Kansas)E-mail: cralumen@gmail.comWeb: www.deepersong.comPrinted in the United States of AmericaFirst printing, 1999E-book printing, 2001PDF available 2021Translated to in Spanish and RussianCover Design: Judy Stewart, www.jstewartdesigns.comGetting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com6 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

The Greek Philosopher Plato developed the philosophicalconcept of transcendence. The verb “to transcend” means “to go beyond” something. InTranscendentalism, it meant that there are truths that gobeyond, or transcend, proof. These were truths that weresimply “known” but could not be proved with logic. Thesetruths were a private experience of faith and conviction. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant gaveTranscendentalism its name. Kant, with other German thinkers, influenced the views ofsome important English writers: the poet-critic Samuel TaylorColeridge and William Wordsworth, and the Scottishphilosopher-historian Thomas Carlyle. These three, especiallyCarlyle, exchanged ideas with Ralph Waldo Emerson ofConcord, MA. It was Emerson who brought the movement to New Englandand nurtured its growth in this country. American Transcendentalism thus began in the 1840’s asEmerson interacted with Longfellow, Whittier, Oliver WendellHolmes, Thoreau, and Lowell. This influential group of peoplewere all born within a few years and a few miles of each otherin New England. Transcendentalism was the beginning of American interest inOriental thought. Emerson and his friends read the Hindus,Confucius, Buddha, and the Mohammedan Sufis. TheBhagavad-Gita was very influential to Emerson. Transcendentalism became an eclectic composite of Oriental,Greek, English, French, German, and native thought.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mindwww.deepersong.com THE ORIGINS OF NEW THOUGHT2 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

MAJOR INFLUENCES IN SCIENCE OF MINDThere are three creative thinkers that greatly influenced ErnestHolmes (1887-1960) as he moved along his spiritual path anddeveloped Science of Mind. They were Ralph Waldo Emerson, the distinguished New Englandphilosopher and essayist (1803-1852) Thomas Troward, an eminent British jurist and metaphysician(1847-1916) Emma Curtis Hopkins, a greatly respected American teacherand mystic, often called the “teacher of teachers” (1853-1925)RALPH WALDO EMERSONEmerson’s entire life was one of spiritual exploration. He has beencalled “the Father of New Thought” because he was instrumentalin gathering together a group of intellectuals, writers, andphilosophers to explore the transcendental philosophy.Emerson entered Harvard College on a scholarship at age 14. Hebecame a Unitarian minister. He wrote eloquent essays on manysubjects.Emerson thought every man is an individualization of the one andonly God. He thought that at the center of our being we are alloperated on by spiritual laws, which execute themselves.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mindwww.deepersong.com Transcendentalism is a belief there is a higher reality andgreater knowledge than that manifested in human mind. Itdivides reality into a realm of spirit and a realm of matter. Thisdivision is made by many of the great religions of the world.3 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

Emerson is not thought of as a New Thought writer, but rather asone of the sources from which New thought drew a great deal.Reading: Emerson’s eloquent essays that particularly reflectScience of Mind thinking are Self-Reliance, Spiritual Laws,Compensation, and The Over-soul.Ernest Holmes and EmersonErnest Holmes was a spiritual seeker. Born in 1887, he wasprimarily “home schooled” by the ardent reader who was hismother. In his teens, Ernest began a search for the similarities inall the worlds’ religions. He read extensively about all of them. Hewas deeply moved by the work of Ralph Waldo EmersonHolmes said, “Reading Emerson is like drinking water to me.”THOMAS TROWARDThomas Troward was born in the Punjab, India in 1847, educatedin England and returned to India to become a Divisional Judge inthe Punjab, which is now Pakistan. His chief interest lay in the field of religion. He explored theIndian religions and studied comparative religions. He studiedIndian lore and sacred writings as well as Hebrew and otherancient scriptures. He was an ardent student of the Bible andwas drawn to Emerson’s writings. The concept of reincarnationwas a strong influence in his thinkingHe associated himself with the Higher Thought Centre in Englandand became a noted leader of British New Thought.Troward was interested in formulating a theory of mental healing. When he was asked to label it, he called it “Mental Science .”Troward began by examining the universe. He saw things thatseemed to have a quality of livingness and some that did not.Since the difference is not always sharp, he concluded that thereare degrees of livingness. Further searching led him to concludethat what makes the difference is intelligence.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com4 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

Reading: Troward's The Dore Lectures contain a logical, intellectual explanation of this rich philosophy.Ernest Holmes and TrowardHolmes discovered Troward’s work in 1914, two years beforeTroward died. He said “This is as near to my own thoughts as Ishall ever come”. He began speaking on Troward’s writing togrowing groups when he was 25 without realizing his lifetimeministry had begun. He totally absorbed Troward’s ideas anddeeply interlinked them with his own thinking. He was one of themain channels through which Troward’s ideas reached Americancircles.PHINEAS PARKHURST QUIMBY (1802-66)Phineas Quimby was an American mental healer whose ideasgreatly influenced the New Thought movement, a religiousmetaphysical healing group. He originally studied mesmerismand became a practitioner of hypnosis. He claimed that he couldheal by mere suggestion. Quimby believed that illness originatedin the mind and was created by erroneous beliefs. He taught thatwhen a person opened their mind to God’s wisdom, they couldconquer any sickness. One of his patients and disciples was Mary Baker Eddy, thefounder of Christian Science. When Eddy moved into her ownwork she denied Quimby had made any contribution to the theoryof Christian Science.EMMA CURTIS HOPKINSEmma Curtis Hopkins, more than any other single teacher, influenced New Thought. She was born in Connecticut in 1853.She was educated at Woodstock Academy there and remained fora time as an instructor. In 1882, she went to Mary Baker Eddy (founder of ChristianScience) because she was ill. She was healed. She then devotedherself to the study and growth of the Christian Scienceapproach. She became a practitioner and served as editor(1884-85) of the Christian Science Journal. Within another year,Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com5 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

her independent quest for spiritual truth created an impossiblesituation between the two religious thinkers and she began toexplore other metaphysical writings. In 1886, she left Mrs. Eddy and moved to Chicago where in 1887,she established the Christian Science Theological Seminary, aninstitution founded to promote teachings similar to those of hermentor. She quickly won a following. She branched out andtaught classes in New York, San Francisco, Kansas City, Boston, and elsewhere. Among those influenced by these lectures were Melinda Cramer and Nona Books, co-founders of DivineScience Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, who established the Unity Schoolof Christianity Harriet Emilie Cady, author of Lessons in Truth Annie Rix Militz, founder of The Home of Truth Ernest Holmes, founder of Religious Science.Because her influence was so pervasive in these New Thoughtorganizations Emma Curtis Hopkins came to be called the“Teacher of Teachers.”Unity, Divine Science and Religious Science are the three largestorganizations within the present-day International New ThoughtAlliance (INTA).Emma Curtis Hopkins was a genuine mystic. She emphasizedthis element in all her teachings and writing. She drew upon theBible, the non-Christian scriptures, and the works of the world’sgreat philosophers and saints in her teaching. Her mysticism wasa very potent influence upon Ernest Holmes. She spent time in London, where she had contact with ThomasTroward and other British leaders of the New Thought movement. She eventually ceased using the name Christian Science andbegan teaching privately.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com6 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

Ernest Holmes and HopkinsErnest Holmes studied with Emma Curtis Hopkins in her lateryears when she was teaching only individuals. He felt she, alongwith Eckhart, were the greatest of the mystics.Reading: Hopkins’ Scientific Christian Mental Practice is apowerful treatise on mental healing.INFLUENCESErnest Homes studied writings from all the worlds’ great religionslooking for the common threads among them. But Ralph WaldoEmerson, Thomas Troward, and Emma Curtis Hopkins werestrong, guiding lights along his way.WHO IS ERNEST HOLMES?Ernest Holmes is the founder of the International ReligiousScience movement, which is recognized as one of the leadingviewpoints in modern metaphysics. Science of Mind is a spiritualphilosophy that easily applies to everyday living while alsoexpanding the student’s sense of their relationship to God andtheir place in the Universe.Known to his family as the “question mark,” Ernest Holmes was apassionate seeker of knowledge. He embarked on a path ofindependent thinking at age 18. He was deeply moved by thework of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He then found Judge ThomasTroward in England who further defined elements of thephilosophy that was formulating in his mind. He began teachingTroward everywhere he could. He was also touched by the work ofEmma Curtis Hopkins who had begun to influence other great"New Thought" leaders. He wrote Science of Mind, which is used as a textbook in ReligiousScience churches. Began lecturing on Troward Published The Science of Mind1916 Established the Institute of Religious Science1927Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com71926 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

It is called God, Spirit,Universal Intelligence, Buddha, Krishna, the I AM or any othername that indicates One. The Nature of God/Spirit is Love. We exist within this power and we participate in the creation ofour Universe.Ernest Holmes writes in Science of MindThe Science of Mind is based entirely upon the supposition thatwe are surrounded by a Universal Mind, into which we think. This Mind, in its original state, fills all space. Spirituality is natural goodness. God is not a person; God is aPresence personified in us. Spirituality is not a thing; It is theatmosphere of God’s Presence, goodness, truth and beauty.”The Universe is the result of the Self-Contemplation of God. Ourlives are the result of our self-contemplations, and are peopledwith the personification of our thoughts and ideas. Accept thiswithout question for it is true.AS MUCH AS WE CAN BELIEVE will be done unto us.We believe that the Universal Spirit, which is God, operatesthrough a Universal Mind, which is the Law of God; and that weare surrounded by this Creative Mind which receives the directimpress of our thought and acts upon it.We believe in the control of conditions through the power of thisMind.USING SCIENCE OF MINDBy consciously choosing, developing and embodyingbeliefs, values and attitudes which speak to what wedesire for our lives, we set the creative process intomotion to create a quality of life rather than simplydealing with specific conditions. Our own feelings andemotions help build our faith in the creative process; weachieve a life that is more than our greatestexpectations.Church of Religious Science Professional Practitioner StudiesGetting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mindwww.deepersong.com man uses in the Universe. Each of us is responsible for the unfolding good in ourlives. It is our own personal beliefs, backed by thefeelings and emotions around them, that help to createthe continuing unfoldment of our lives. We do not createfor others in any way; at most, we play a part in theirscript of life as they play their part in ours.Church of Religious Science Professional Practitioner StudiesWe must know that the Al Powerful Spirit is everavailable and ever equal to the healing of anydiscordant condition of body, mind or affairs, but wemust never look outside of ourselves to find this Spirit, since It is indwelling.Ernest Holmes, Science of MindThe Divine Presence will guide, guard, and protect you.It will counsel you with wisdom. Its might and majestywill enter into your being. It will sustain and uphold youin everything you do. You will learn to talk with It andyou will receive direct intuitive answers. Faith is theessence of this communion.Ernest Holmes, This Thing Called YouLift the load of personal responsibility by transferring itto the Law of perfect action. No matter what confrontsyou, what obstructions appear, or what undesirablesituations exist in your experience, this Law candissolve them.Ernest Holmes, This Thing Called You"We should allow the gifts of Life to flow out toeverything we touch, everyone we meet, every situationwe contact. Then, wherever we go, every situation isblessed, every person is helped, every discord isharmonized, without our even being conscious of it.Ernest Homes, Creative LivingLiving With Science Of MindThe principles in Science of Mind are very empowering. They offeryou a way to change your life in any manner you can envision.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind l www.deepersong.com10 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

You take responsibility for your choices and the outcome theyproduce.Learning to examine your beliefs and r align them with spiritualtruths will allow you to respond and react differently to the eventsin your life and thus create a different outcome. When you become aware of the words you speak the thoughtsyou think and the actions you take, and align them with qualitiesof Spirit like peace, harmony, love, understanding, andwholeness, you begin to create those same qualities in the worldaround you.Science of Mind teaches that you can change your life simply bychanging your mind. The tools are Spiritual Mind Treatment(prayer), affirmations, increased awareness and choices made forthe highest good of all concerned. When you experience Oneness with the Universal Mind, you nolonger experience separation and loneliness. In its place is theexperience of being loved, protected, provided for, and whole. We are limited only by our own belief in what can be created andour belief in what we feel we deserve. That is why it is said we canchange our lives simply by changing our minds.“Scientists have shown that mental events transformthemselves into molecules. These molecules are literallymessengers from inner space Every thought you have, every idea you entertain, sends a chemical message atthe core of cellular awareness. Putting attention on aword, which is the symbolic expression of an idea, istherefore magical. It transforms the invisible into thevisible.”Dr. Deepak Chopra, in Creating Affluence“The basis of all healing is a change in belief. Ourthinking is a reflection of our beliefs. produces external conditions. These conditionscorrespond with the belief.”Thomas Troward, The Dore LecturesCORE CONCEPTSA universal principle is a concept that runs through many of thereligions and philosophies of the world like “God is One,” “God isAll,” and “God and I are One.” Ernest Holmes’ work embraceduniversal concepts from the world’s great spiritual philosophiesas well as concepts from the “new” physics that developed duringthat time. Students of Ernest Holmes presented his metaphysicaltheory of how the Universe works in the form of “Core Concepts.”It is often said that Science of Mind is a philosophy, which ismeant to be easily practiced in one’s daily life. Holmes wrote, “Iwould rather see a student of this Science prove its Principle thanto have him repeat all the words of wisdom that have ever beenuttered.”Although Ernest Holmes called this philosophy a science, hetaught that the “activator” of this work came when a person, intheir individual consciousness, identified with and felt totallyconnected with the One All-Encompassing Presence.I. God is all there isThe word for all-there-is can be Spirit, God, Universal Mind,Infinite Knowingness, the Divine Presence, Great Spirit, Tao orany word that holds the meaning that there is only one All-ThereIs. Everything is Spirit. We are Spirit having a human experience. We are each a unique, individualized expression of Spirit. Spirit isGetting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com12 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

in everything we are, everything we do, everything we say. We areindividualized Spirit. Spirit is all there is.II. God is triune - Spirit, Soul, Body. Each human is aprojection of God in microcosmSpirit/God is manifest in three aspects - Spirit, Soul and Body. The analogy is a seed (thought, idea), planted in soil (the Law),that develops into the plant (circumstance), the type of which isdictated by the kind of seed that was planted.SEED: God as Spirit is Love, the conscious Universal Mind fromwhich all originates.MEDIUM: God as Soul, in Religious Science, refers to the creativemedium, the Law that only says, “yes” to whatever we think orbelieve to be so.PLANT: God as Body is the form our ideas and beliefs take.III. All human thought is creativeOur thoughts create our reality. Our reality is the extension ofour consciousness. When we change our consciousness, wechange our reality according to the depth of our belief. Allthoughts are creative.IV. Prayer stimulates the flow of the Infinite Nature of Godinto human experienceOur every thought, word and action, both conscious andunconscious, determines our circumstance. To change ourcircumstances we change our mind, our belief system, the way weperceive. We do this through affirmative scientific prayer that Science ofMind calls Spiritual Mind Treatment. The core of this treatment isour belief in and knowledge that we are Spirit manifest and havewithin us the wholeness, health, self-expression, and well-beingthat is naturally Spirit. Because we are all Spirit, everyone canuse affirmative scientific prayer to change their life.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com13 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

V. The universe of wholeness embraces all. Humans have freewillThere is only One Spirit. It manifests in different forms. Someforms can seem less positive than others but they are still Spirit. We have choice in how Spirit manifests in our lives. And we areresponsible for what we create.VI. The Universal abundance is unlimitedSpirit is limitless. It holds within it everything we could possiblywant or need. Since we are Spirit, we have access to everythingwe could possibly want or need. When we believe in ourselves aslimitless Spirit we believe the abundance of the Universe is oursand will easily manifest. What we create in our lives is a reflectionof what we believe we deserve and what we believe is possible.VII. This is a reciprocal universeThere is a reciprocal nature in the Universe. What we put out wereceive back. This applies to all areas of our life. We are to giveout thoughts of love, compassion, joy, peace, achievement, andabundance and be totally accepting when they return to us.VIII. The universe exists in the eternal now, each momentcomplete and perfect within itselfThe Universe exists in the “now.” There is no judgment withinUniversal Harmony. When we release the past and forgiveourselves and all others, there is room for real spiritual growth toflourish.IX. Immortality is a universal principleBecause we are Spirit we are eternal. Our form may change butwe always exist as God/Spirit. Our individualized consciousnessand self-knowingness continues to expand, as does our ability tolove.Getting Your Feet Wet In Science of Mind www.deepersong.com14 1998 Cara Lumen PDF 2021

As we learn to live within the consciousness of Oneness withSpirit, and follow our divine intuition, we radiate out from ourbeing the pure, loving Light of the God within. The Teaching SymbolThe symbol below depicts the way it works. A treatment is a form of prayer which uses definite steps basedupon the philosophy that we are all whole and all an integral partof Source/God/Spirit and need only tap into a deeper awarenessof that Oneness to manifest things in our lives.Purpose: Choose the purpose of the treatment.Affirmation: Write an affirmation regarding this purpose.Affirmations are always in the present tense and assume theaction is accomplished. The TreatmentRecognition: Use words that move you deeper into theawareness that all are One, that there is only one life, that life isthe life of God/Spirit I AM.Unification: Know that your life is part of that One life. Usewords to deepen your feelings of been part of One.Realization: Use the affirmation you composed and put otherwords around it. Speak that it is done, that it is your right, that itis for the highest good of all concerned. Thanks: Give thanks for the new awareness you have receivedand for the movement you know is underway related to thetreatment.Release: Release your words into the Universal Mind, whichalways says "yes,” knowing it is so even as you speak the words. And so it is.
