Elijah and the Contest with Baal(1 Kings 18:1, 2, 17--46)Pre-Session Warm Up[Teacher, place the following items in a bag: a picture of a television;a picture of a famous singer, actor, or sports hero; a sports item suchas a baseball. Have the children try to guess the items by giving themsome hints.] Some people think these things are more important thanGod; boys and girls often spend time on these things and then saythey don’t have time to read their Bibles; some children do thesethings rather than going to church or Sunday school. [Reveal theitems in the bag.]The first Commandment is, “You shall have no other gods before Me”(Exodus 20:3). In today’s lesson we will learn that the people of Israelforgot how important it is to keep God first in their lives.Opening PrayerFather, You are the only true God. You alone are worthy of ourworship. Help us to beware of the “idols” we put into our lives. Teachus this morning how important it is for us to always put You first in ourlives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.Memory VerseKnow this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is Godin heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.(Deuteronomy 4:39)LessonGod’s people were in serious trouble! King Ahab had led them toworship idols, wooden or stone statues of false gods. This made Godangry with the people so He made the rain stop for three and a halfyears. The streams dried up. The plants died. Everyone was hungryProphets Lesson #2and thirsty. Finally, God spoke to Elijah and told him to go to KingAhab with a message.1 Kings 18:1Now it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came toElijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I willsend rain on the earth.”King Ahab blamed Elijah for the drought and the famine and had beenlooking for him for 3 ½ years; Ahab wanted to kill Elijah. So, Elijahprobably wasn’t very excited about God telling him to go see Ahab!1 Kings 18:17Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is thatyou, O troubler of Israel?”Elijah reminded him that God had brought this disaster on the landbecause Ahab had led the people into idol worship.1 Kings 18:18And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’shouse have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and you have followed the Baals. Then Elijah challenged Ahab to a contest to see whose god was themost powerful. Have any of you entered a contest before?I Kings 18:19Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, thefour hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets ofAsherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”King Ahab called everyone together as Elijah had ordered. What agathering that must have been. Thousands of men, women, andchildren crowded together on Mount Carmel. As the people gathered,Elijah sternly told them to decide between God and Baal.Page 7

Elijah and the Contest with Baal1 Kings 18:20-21So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophetstogether on Mount Carmel. And Elijah came to all the people, and said,“How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, followHim; but if Baal, then follow him,” But the people answered him not aword. The people of Israel had combined the worship of Baal with theworship of the true and living God. But God had clearly taught themthat they were to worship Him and Him alone. Some Christians today want to worship God, yet they continue to giveother things first place in their lives. Often the things that take thatspecial place in our hearts and lives are not sinful. They could beclothes, toys, sports, television – things that are not wrong, but theycan become “idols” in our lives if we allow them to become moreimportant to us than God is. Whatever you are spending most of yourtime on tells others what’s most important to you. It is important NOTto allow anything to take God’s place in your life.King Ahab and the Israelites had sinned by trying to serve both thetrue and living God and Baal. Now Elijah told them they would have tochoose. Elijah told them they need to make up their minds, “How longwill you try to serve both Baal and the Lord? If the Lord is God, followHim! But if Baal is God then follow him!”1 Kings 18:22-24Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the Lord; butBaal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. Therefore let them giveus two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it inpieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will preparethe other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. Then youcall on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord;and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” So all the peopleanswered and said, “It is well spoken.”1 Kings 18:1, 2, 17--46were 450 of them. But Elijah had something that the prophets of Baaldidn’t have. Elijah had God, and God wanted to show His power. So they prepared to sacrifice a young bull on an altar.1 Kings 18:26So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, andcalled on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice; no one answered. And they leapedabout the altar which they had made. They called upon their god. They pleaded with him to send fire. Butthere was no reply. Hour after hour they danced in circles under thehot sun.About noon Elijah began to tease them.1 Kings 18:27And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud, forhe is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey,or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.”Furiously the prophets of Baal continued their cries. They grewdesperate and leaped about yelling, “Send down fire!” But no firecame.Baal could not answer because he was a false god. Only God, theCreator, who lives in heaven can hear and answer prayer (Jeremiah33:3). This living and true God loves you and wants you to call on Himto save you (Romans 10:13). If you call on the Lord Jesus to saveyou, He will give you eternal life. A false god or idol can never giveeternal life. Baal was a false god who could not hear the prophets asthey called out at their altar. Then Elijah prepared his sacrifice. The people shouted their agreement to this contest. The peoplethought that the prophets of Baal would surely win. After all, therePage 8Prophets Lesson #2

1 Kings 18:1, 2, 17--461 Kings 18:30Elijah and the Contest with Baal1 Kings 18:38Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the peoplecame near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was brokendown. Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and thewood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was inthe trench. Then Elijah dug a trench about three feet wide around the altar. Hepiled wood upon the altar and laid the bull on the wood. He then filledfour barrels with water and poured the water over the bull and thewood. He wanted to make sure that it was impossible for a man tolight the fire. The people were amazed. In a spectacular way God had proven thatHe, alone, is the true God.1 Kings 18:35So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench withwater. Then, Elijah prayed and asked God to show the people that He wasthe true God.1 Kings 18:36-37And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord God of Abraham,Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel, andthat I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Yourword. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You arethe Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”Elijah didn’t have to shout and dance to make God hear him. Hesimply and quietly prayed, “Oh Lord, show us that You are Go

God asked again, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah replied the same way. This time, God gave Elijah a job to do. He was to find and anoint 3 different men who were chosen by God. God reassured Elijah that he was not alone, telling him there were 7000 people in Israel who still lov

God's lesson to Elijah in all that happened on the mountain may have been in response to something we're not told. But by coming to Elijah in a gentle whisper, God showed Elijah that he wanted him to continue his mission of speaking to the Israelites for him. And Elijah was reminded that God was with him even when the prophet felt utterly alone.
