The competition is opened to 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and the participants are known as Mathletes. The competitions begin with the SprintRound, followed by the Target, Team, andCountdown Rounds. The Sprint Round hasindividual Mathletes answering 30 difficultproblems in 40 minutes. The Target Round has8 problems in pairs of two with 6 minutes perpair to complete. The Team Round has 10problems where teams of four Mathletes have20 minutes to come up with the answers, andfinally, the Countdown Round in a round robinarrangement is conducted with the 8 - 12 highest individual scorers from the Sprint andTarget Rounds. Countdown Round spectatorsare usually amazed by the brilliance of theseMathletes. The competitions require manydedicated volunteers including proctors andscorers.MATHCOUNTS is also an Engineeringevent. It is held around Engineers Week. HSPEsponsors it. Engineering organizations such asASME have members on the Hawaii MATHCOUNTS Steering Committee and providesproctors and scorers for the competition withthe help of ASCE YMF, SAME, the US ArmyCorps of Engineers (USACE), and HawaiianElectric Co., Inc. (HECO) volunteers.Engineering firms such as SSFM Internationalalso help with the competition proctoring andscoring.HSPE organizes Hawaii MATHCOUNTS with assistance from a steering committeecomprised of engineers and educators. HSPECo-Chairmen for Hawaii MATHCOUNTS areKurt Kunimune of Bowers and Kubota andBarry Nakamoto of HECO, and assisted byNathan Yuen of HECO. Curt, who has served onNSPE’s Board of Ethical Review since 2008,was one of four speakers who presented at ajoint seminar by AIHA and ASSE on“Professional Ethics and Responsibility” at theHale Ikena Club House, Ft. Shafter. The otherswere Jennifer Shishido, Bob McEldowney, andCraig Shoji. In his webinar, broadcast remotely from Hilo,Curt provided an overview of professionalethics as it relates to the practice of professional engineering. A key framework of professional engineering ethics is the NSPE Code ofEthics for Engineers, which holds as one of itsfundamental canons the following: “Engineers,in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance thehonor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession.”The use of the Code of Ethics was illustratedthrough a discussion of hypothetical ethical situations involving engineers in the practice oftheir profession. These cases represent a sample of those deliberated annually by the Boardof Ethical Review, which renders their analysisand judgment of the cases based on the tenetsof the Code.In one, an engineer who accepted anadvance payment for services that were neverperformed, was found to be unethical for refusing to return the payment because in the verbalagreement the engineer had with his client, theengineer failed to signal his intent that theadvance would not be refundable. In another case, it was found that it would beunethical for an engineer in responsible chargeof a building renovation design to review andstamp a subcontractor’s plans for a roofingcurb to be installed in the renovation project. These and other cases can be found on theBoard of Ethical Review site on the NSPE website, www.nspe.org.2012 OfficersPresidentVice-PresTreasurerSecretaryPast PresJoanne Hiramatsu954-4262jhiramatsu@oceanit.comJeoffrey S. Page 6KNOW YOUR ASCE HISTORYby C.S. PapacostasTHE LAST STREETCARMentioned in last month’s article was the factthat the YWCA sold its Fernhurst property atthe northwest corner of Alapai and King Streetsto the Honolulu Rapid Transit (HRT) companyand then moved to the Makiki District in 1952.Consistently with numerous citations on thesubject, Bernard W. Stern says “HRT, originallyknown as Honolulu Rapid Transit and LandCompany, officially came into being on July 6,1898, the same day on which Hawai’i wasannexed to the United States. On that day bothhouses of the Hawai’i legislature approved thecompany’s request for a franchise to operatean electric railway system in Honolulu. Finalapproval of the franchise was voted on June25, 1900, when the United States Congressenacted the Organic Act, which validated allfranchises granted after July 7, 1898. The firstelectric streetcar in the islands ran on August31, 1901 [see “Rutledge Unionism,” Universityof Hawaii Press, 1986].”The electric streetcar company out-competed the older Hawaiian Tramways, Ltd., thatoperated a steel-wheel-on-steel track, muledrawn tram system since 1888.Stern continues, “The original owners anddirectors of HRT were mainly ‘mission boys’(direct descendants of missionaries) and thoserelated to missionary families by marriage. Theoriginal directors included Lorrin A. Thurston, publisher of the Advertiser, and W. R. Castle, aprominent attorney, both of whom had beenactively engaged in the overthrow of themonarchy in 1893 and in the government of theHawaii Republic that ruled the islands untilannexation in 1898. Their heirs were part of theHRT Board until the late 1950’s when an outsider, Harry Weinberg, took over control of thecompany.”William Richard Castle was the son ofSamuel Northrup Castle who, with Amos StarrCooke, founded the Castle and CookeCompany in 1851. It so happens that the patriarch of the Atherton family who had given thefirst Fernhurst property to the YWCA wasJoseph Ballard Atherton who had begun hiscareer as a clerk withCastle and Cooke aftercoming to Hawai i in1858. He married Amos’daughterJulietteMontague Cooke androse to the presidency ofthe company, one of the“Big Five” firms that forall practical purposescontrolled or had amajor influence on theeconomy of Hawai i.So the Athertons hadboth kinship and professional relationships withboth sides of the transaction that placed theFernhurstpropertyunder the ownership ofHRT.The 1927 SanbornFire map shown belowillustrates that HRTmaintained its car barn and electric powerhouse in the lot bounded on three sides byBeretania, Alapai and South Hotel Streets, whereas the adjacent Fernhurst property(bounded by South Hotel, Alapai and SouthKing Streets) would be a natural extension.By the way, shown on the map is the footprintof the Fernhurst homestead (number 2533) as Idescribed it last month (March 2012). The parenthetical number (912) is the designation ofthe structure that occupied the same location(the Atherton residence) as shown in the earlier(1914) fire map.Interestingly, whatisshown as “S. HOTEL” street on the 1927 mapis denoted as “YOUNG” street in the 1914 version. At that time, apparently, Hotel Street terminated at Alapai.By the time of the sale in 1951, HRT hadabandoned the operation of electric streetcars, having added motor buses to its vehicle fleetsince 1925 (first gasoline and later dieselbuses). A 20-year period of also running electric trolley buses lasted from 1937 until 1957,after which time no the longer needed powerhouse was dismantled and the facility wasreplaced wholly with diesel bus yard operations.Roy S. Melvin and Robert Ramsay, authors ofa 1960 monograph titled “Hawaiian Tramways,”describe the last electric streetcar run evocatively:“At two o’clock on the afternoon of June 31,1941, car 47 left the HRT carhouse. Number47’s run that day was unusual. To begin with, itwas an old open car, one of those originallybuilt about 1908. In addition, the car sportedone of the largest leis ever made, which circledit completely. At the controller was George Bell, son of Jack Bell who ran HRT’s first car in 1901.The car ran over the remaining rail line all afternoon and evening The end finally came at1:30 a.m. on July 1, 1941.”Do you know of a civil engineering accomplishment or event that your fellow ASCE members might find interesting?
