2 - The Saladin News - News for ShrinersFrom the Potentate.Nobles,What a great winter and spring we had as a Temple! It was great to get around to many shrine clubs to eitherwatch or assist in their officers’ installations and regular club meetings. The Divan was always greeted withkindness and brotherly love, and that is a great feelingto have. Thank you all for your warm welcomes duringour visits.By the time you receive this edition of the SaladinNews, the circus, the March Stated Meeting and CircusAppreciation Brunch, and the Spring Ceremonial willbe behind us already. We had a strong year with thecircus; costs were down, tickets sales were up, and everycircus program we had was sold. If you didn’t get achance to see the circus program this year, drop by theTemple soon to see it. Recorder Rick Williams did anincredible job laying it out! At the Circus AppreciationBrunch, everyone who worked the circus was recognized with a certificate and a pewter figurine of twocircus elephants in a classic pose on a pedestal. ChrisBrandt, Shriners Hospitals for Children patient and sonof Noble Gary Brandt, spoke at the event after the StatedMeeting about his experience as a patient. He fieldedmultiple questions from nobles and their ladies aboutthe patient process and how it felt to go through it.When he was finished, the Temple presented 5000 inhis name to whatever cause with Shriners Hospitals forChildren that Chris would like. We are excited to hearwhat he chooses! A special thanks goes out to everyonewho made the circus and the appreciation brunch a success! Mark Baldwin, Larry Allen, Rick Williams, SaraKopec, Jeff Gooder, Ryan Hardy, and everyone else whohad a hand in stepping up the circus and appreciationbrunch is greatly appreciated! In February, we had our annual Saladin Valentine’sDinner at the Temple again. 77 people were thereincluding nobles, masons, their ladies, and guests. Inrepresentation of the Temple and the guests at theevent, we donated 16,000 to The Shriners Hospitals forChildren – Galveston and then served a seven coursewine-paired meal with a theme of A Trip Around theWorld. We started with an Asian-style seared sea scallop course, followed by a beautiful Greek salad. For thethird course, High Priest and Prophet Jeff Gooder prepared Spanish paella with chicken and chorizo sausage.Fourth, we enjoyed Armenian Khashlama stew, andVisit www.saladinshrine.com for all of the latest Saladin news - 15From the Recorder.2018 Potentate Jonathan Duley waiving to the crowd at the closing showof the 2018 Saladin Shrine Circus in Grand Rapids, MI.then moved back to the U.S. with a smoked three cheesemac n’ cheese for the fifth course. The sixth course wasAustralian kangaroo shepherd’s pie (yes with real,wild-caught, ground kangaroo). Finally, we finished thenight with South African malva pudding cake servedwith vanilla bean ice cream from Loves in the GrandRapids Downtown Market. A huge thank you goes outto everyone who helped make this night possible, butmost especially to the following people: Jason Fongerswho spent all evening in the kitchen doing dishes; SaraKopec for all her hard work preparing and serving;our entire serving staff (Michael, Nenad, Amanda, andBethany) for their non-stop support all night; GrandRapids’ own sommelier Michael Smith for choosing andpresenting the wines; Rick Williams for his organizational and design work; and Jeff Gooder for preparingthe paella course. You might be wondering why you didn’t see muchSee Potentate Page 12On any given weekday I receive around ten phone callsthat are Shrine related and directed to me personally. Thesame is true of emails which number about the same perday. They can be a question about the temple, dues, a rule, and even the occasional complaint. I try to handle themall with the same demeanor regardless of the Noble’s disposition. I’ve always felt one of my responsibilities as Recorder, often being one of the first people a Noble reachesout to, is to listen and do my best to resolve the questionor situation. Sometimes that can take one minute on thephone and sometimes it takes thirty. I’ve never begrudgedthe time I spend dealing with a Noble’s question or theirdemeanor on the phone. It all goes to why I took this jobin the first place.I became Recorder because I wanted to use what skills Ihad to make a difference in the future of the temple. Thatfuture can be as near as the phone calls and emails I willreceive and respond to tomorrow or as far as where theTemple will find itself in 25 years. I always have to thinkin short and long term ways because that is what we needto do to succeed as an organization - solve immediate issues and always keep the long game in mind.As an individual Noble do you think the same wayabout your fraternal commitments? Are you looking atthe short term issues and also thinking about what thefuture holds? Both for you as an individual Shrine Masonand for the Craft at large? How do you value your commitment to one versus the other? Are they ever in conflictYear-To-Date2017Presenting a Shriners International Legacy Certificate to Noble LewParsell at a recent meeting of the South Haven Shrine Club. I’m thinking about these issues everyday as I address the needs of the Temple. I don’t havethe luxury or the desire to focus on just one of them. Indoing so I think I would be doing them both a disservice.I visit a club or unit or answer a phone call or email froma Noble because I care about them and I think what theShrine needs more than anything right now are Shrinerswho care about each other and future of our organization. I start each day thinking that I have the opportunityto make a difference for Saladin. Some may criticize andsome may encourage and I try to take them all in strideand remember that I became a Shriner and the Recorderbecause I wanted to make a difference and so do you.Are you a legacy Shriner?5 years agoBeginning Count:813Beginning Count:885Beginning Count:Ending Count:814Ending Count:813Ending lsions:0Resigned:0Resigned:0Resigned:0Associate Drops0Associate Drops6Associate Drops2Change:1Change:% Change:Status:.001%Gold% Change:Status:72-8.14%N/AChange:% Change:Status:95-10.1%N/AShriners International has a programthat recognizes mult-generationalShriner. Our values have beenwidely accepted around the globe, which has ledto phenomenal international interest and growth.During the 2017 Imperial Session of ShrinersInternational in July, petitions for dispensations toopen new temples in Santa Cruz, Bolivia – as BoliviaShriners, and São Paulo, Brazil – as Amal Shriners, were granted, further expanding our global reach. In September, representatives of both groupstraveled to Shriners International Headquarters inTampa, Florida, to participate in on-site training. Welook forward to watching the growth and developmentof these two new temples.Amal Shriners, U.D. – BrazilThe first temple in Brazil, Hikmat Shriners in Cuiabá,Mato Grasso, was chartered in 2015, and was our firsttemple in South America. Now, the Shriners of São Paulo,Brazil, are ready for a second temple to be established.“All good Masons should become Shriners,” said NobleNewton Duarte of Amal Shriners, who became a Shrinerin March and attended the on-site training as the temple’srepresentative.Bolivia Shriners, U.D. – BoliviaThe members of Bolivia Shriners were drawn to the fraternity because of “the Masonic spirit reflected in the loveof the neighbor, in fraternal environments and in family,”they said. Their journey began in 2008, during the WorldConference of Masonic Grand Lodges held in WashingtonD.C., when they visited Almas Shriners and were invitedto become Shriners. The group operated as the BolivianShrine Club, under the jurisdiction of Almas Shriners, before their application for temple dispensation was presented and approved at the 2017 Imperial Session.Bolivia Shriners has many goals, including “continuingto provide opportunities for children to receive medicaltreatment at Shriners Hospitals, in order to improve theirquality of life.”After our installation ceremony onJanuary 6th, your Divan honored mewith a Lifetime Achievement Awardand declared me an Honorary Potentate of Saladin Shriners. Thisyear, Roundy will travel to South Korea to compete in the 2018 Paralympics. She credits Shriners Hospitalsfor Children with helping to make itpossible. In 1994, when she was just 8 yearsold, Nicole was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a form of bone cancer.Later that year, she lost her right legabove the knee and continued aggressive chemotherapy treatment. Shriners Hospitals for Children — SaltLake City made all of her prosthetics until she was 19 and introducedher to adaptive snowboarding during their Camp Un-LIMB-ited, aweek-long adaptive sports programdesigned for teen amputees. “I wasterrified at first, but snowboardingwas like a freedom from my disabil-Nicole Roundy, former Shriners Hospitals for Children patient and amputeenow serves as a motivational speakerand disability advocate.ity,” says Roundy. She was able to take her athleticaspirations to the next level afterShriners Hospitals created her firstprosthetic with a bendable knee joint.“Shriners Hospitals taught me thatI am my own biggest advocate, andthat you can’t take no for an answer.
