A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOWMANUFACTURINGAND C ONSTRUCTIONWhat does performance mean to you? If you’re an AC syndicate racer, it’s ultra high strength, ultra low stretch. If you’re a casual cruiser, it’s great handling and durability. If you’re a powerboater, it’s that extra bit of stretch and strength whenever the wind kicks up at the dock. How does New England Ropes consistently deliver suchperformance, regardless of application?it comes down to the choices we create and make available in bothfiber and construction. For your “great race,” we’ve developedmatchless high modulus fiber lines to give you a lasting competitiveedge. For family cruising, peace of mind comes in the form of highquality polyester lines that are durable, UV resistant, and comfortableto grip and handle. For docking or mooring, our nylon lines withstandthe sea’ fury to ensure the safety of your boat. What you should know about fibers. One of the building blocks of any line, regardless of the ulitmate use,is fibre. We feel that it is important for you, as the end-user expectingcertain performance, to have a basic understanding of the characteristics of the various fibers used in the manufacture of rope today. Thefollowing table will help. So where should these fibers be used?Nylon: Application where strength and shock absorption are important, i.e. dock and anchor lines.Fiber TypeStrengthStretchResistanceCostto erateHMPEvery highvery lowgoodhighAramidsvery highvery lowfairhighLCPvery highvery lowfairhighPBOvery highvery very low poorvery highmoderatevery lowPolypropylene lowpoorPolyester: Situations where strength, low stretch, and durabilityare key, i.e. most running rigging applications.HMPE, Aramids, and LCP: These are all generic fiber types.HMPE refers to Dyneema or Spectra , Aramids refer to Kevlar ,Technora , and Twaron , while LCP refers to Vectran . Theseare all considered very extremely low stretch but come with a highprice tag. Generally found on very serious racing sailboats andlarger yachts for running rigging.A WIDE RANGE OFDIFFERENTCONSTRUCTIONSNew England Ropes goes togreat lengths to achieve optimumperformance from every line. Wehave a specific type of line tomeet each of your needs.6DOUBLE BRAIDA braided core inside a braided coverproduces an easy-to-handle rope thatis strong and very durable. A popularconstruction for running rigging anddocking lines. Used in Sta-Set, EnduraBraid, T-900, V-100, and Double Braiddocklines.PARALLEL COREA patented unidirectional fiber corewith a braided cover produces a linewith significantly less stretch andgreater strength than the same sizedouble braid line. Ideal for halyards, sheets, and guys, where low stretch isrequired. Used in Sta-Set X.

PBO: Generic fiber type which refers to the brand name Zylon .PBO is a high performance fiber with the highest strength and lowest stretch of any other commercially available fiber. It is extremelyexpensive and experiences progressive strength loss when exposedto UV rays. For this reason, PBO is typically only used in extremelyhigh load applications in only the highest level of competitive sailing. In most cases the best use is for abrasion resistance in covers.Polypropylene: Applications where lightweight or very low costis important such as light air spinnaker sheets or barrier rope forswimming. What you should know about construction. At New England Ropes we utilize many different types of constructions. Most people recognize three strand, single braid and doublebraid as the basic methods of twisting or braiding fibers into a finished line. The process of twisting fibers by its very nature reducesstrength and increases stretch. At New England Ropes, we pioneered a fourth construction technique called parallel (fiber) core construction (Sta Set X). By keepingthe fibers in parallel, we align the fibers with little or no twist. Ourpatented construction technique of wrapping the core and braidinga cover produces a line that has higher strength and significantlyless stretch than a comparable single or double braid. Innovation, experience, and high standards of quality are what set New EnglandRopes apart from the field. As an ISO 9001 accredited manufacturer, our commitment is toconsistency in manufacturing for reliability in delivery. We utilize allour resources to maintain our position as one of the leading innovators in rope performance and technology. At New England Ropeswe select only the highest quality fiber from leading worldwidesuppliers. The challenge is to blend the fiber’s characteristics and our yearsof design and manufacturing experience into finished products thatperform to your exacting standards. Those standards depend onyour particular application and expectations.Predictability and control of strength, stretch, and durability are theultimate goals for rope performance, or all boaters. Our choice ofmaterials, construction techniques, and years of experience makesNew England Ropes the leader in rope technology. How do we at New England Ropes define performance.Exactly as you choose to define it.Dyneema is a registered trademark of DSMVectran is a registered trademark of Hoechst CelaneseKevlar is a registered trademark of DupontZylon is a registered trademark of TeijinWe reserve the right to modify technical specifications and misprints.RELATIVE STRETCH COMPARISONLoadSINGLE BRAIDA flexible and supple constructionthat absorbs twist and does not kink.Perfect for mainsheets, furling lines, and large dock lines. It‘s name: STS , stands for „strongerthan steel“.In an ideal rope, each of its elements carries an equal share of theload that is applied to the rope. This makes it possible to derivemaximum benefit from the performance potential of the materials used. Unfortunately, in practical use, it has not been possibleto fully exploit this potential. Therefore, in order to further improvethe performance of our products, we have developed an entirelynew stretching process.Advantages of a rope incorporating STS technologyvery high breaking force paired with a small diameterlow constructional elongationlong service life due to closed rope structure, even without coverstable rope cross-sectionSTS – Stronger than steelTM ropeUniform fiber lengths in the rope’s longitudinal profileMolecular chains are oriented in the direction of the forceImproved degree of utilization of the fibers contained in the ropeHigher breaking strengthStable rope cross-sectionCompact rope structureStretching under heat is used to match fiber lengths within thecross-section with one another. This causes the load on the ropeto be distributed evenly to several load-carrying elements. As aresult, the breaking force can be increased significantly. In addition, construction-dependent elongation is reduced to a minimum. The rope‘s cross-section becomes more compact, resulting in anextremely robust rope that has a closed structure which increasesthe rope‘s overall service life, even without a cover. conventional rope STS rope
