From the Pastor’s Desk .GENERATIONS OF FAITHDear Parishioners,Go to Joseph! This is the Church’s constant plea to all thoseseeking guidance, help, and protection. It is inscribed on thebaldachino over the altar of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral inBrooklyn: Ite ad Joseph. It is reminiscent of Joseph, son ofJacob, in the Book of Genesis, to whom his brothers go intime of hunger to receive Pharaoh’s grain. Our Holy Father,Pope Francis, has a life-long devotion to St. Joseph. His dailymorning offering concludes with a devotional prayer to thesaint, and he offers us another to pray, which I will concludewith. He keeps a statue of a reclining Joseph in his bedroomto whom he entrusts the church’s challenges each night atbedtime. Writing them down and putting them under thesaint’s pillow, he says, “I’m going to sleep now, Joseph, youtake care of these problems.” So it was not surprising that onthe 150 anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as Patronof the Universal Church, the Holy Father proclaimed, in anApostolic Letter Patris Corde (With a Father’s Heart) a“Year of Saint Joseph” from December 8, 2020, to December8, 2021.Your Pastoral Staff and Parish Council have beenexploring opportunities for us, individually and as a parish, tobenefit from this year by increasing our devotion to St. Joseph and imitating his many virtues. To begin with, we arecelebrating a Votive Mass of Saint Joseph each Wednesday (aday traditionally given over to him) whenever the liturgicalcalendar allows. The Litany of St. Joseph can conclude thoseMasses. At other times we will make use of this prayer thatthe Holy Father encourages us to pray.Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.To you God entrusted his only Son;In you Mary placed her trust; With you Christ became man.Blessed Joseph, to us too,Show yourself a fatherAnd guide us in the path of life.Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,And defend us from every evil. Amen.thIn Christ, Father Bob (Robert Joseph)P.S. Words of Life“Walk with each other. Do not be afraid to embraceGod’s gift of life. Whatever storms or trials we face, weare not alone. He is with us. ‘Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age’ (Matthew 28:20).” NABRE 2010 CCD. Used with permission. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities Respect Life Reflection:Be Not Afraid (respectlife.org/be-not-afraid)Sister Nora’s NotesIs it too early to talk aboutwater sports? After all,we’re almost in February, which means that springtraining for baseball is justaround the corner. I’ve lately been thinking about WindSurfing. I discovered (thehard way) that in order toWindsurf, you have to beable to do four things: standon the board (our traditions?), reach up and hold on to the boon or sail bar (thepresent?), catch the wind (the future?), and swim, because we don’t always negotiate those three thingswell. Standing on the board is scary; it’s much safer tosit or kneel, and then you feel safe. But you won’t goanywhere that way. So, we are called to stand firm onour traditions and faith, hold on tight to our present realities, and with courage and hope move into the future towhich God calls us. Just think about where we, as disciples, will be able to bring the Good News!2021 Announced Mass BookThe 2021 Mass Book is open - send in your request tothe rectory - Attention: Mary. In the following paragraph, Pope Francis reminds us that, "St.Therese of Lisieux invites us to practice the little wayof love, not to miss out on a kind word, a smile, or anysmall gesture which sows peace and friendship. Anintegral ecology is also made up of simple daily gestures which break with the the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness. In the end, a world of exacerbated consumption is at the same time a world whichmistreats life in all its forms."Please see the priest before Mass in the sacristySOCIETY of ST.
