Stewardship“Have we forgotten what Stewardship means?”Since October is “Stewardship Month” – after the beginning of the EcclesiasticalYear in September; the end of Summer Vacations; the beginning of Church School andwhen we, as a Parish family, kick-off next year’s Stewardship “Campaign” and remindourselves to complete our 2013 pledges, if we haven’t already done so – we are calledupon to ask ourselves: “How much should I pledge for my Annual Stewardship to theParish ?”Perhaps some of us have forgotten that our Parish decided decades ago to abandonthe concept of “dues” and embrace the Orthodox teaching of “stewardship”. Our forefathers and foremothers concluded that the answer to the question of how much to giverests within our own hearts; that giving to the Church should be “sacrificial”; and that theact of giving to the Church should not be viewed in terms of “how much does the Parishneed to meet its budget?” Rather instead, in terms of “How much can I give after takingcare of the needs of my family?”Those who came before us and established this Parish understood that financialStewardship giving is an act of gratitude to the Lord for all of the gifts we enjoy, and thatthis act of giving serves our spiritual growth rather than simply helping the Parish meetits budget. They recognized that an Orthodox Parish should support itself exclusivelyfrom the voluntary financial Stewardship of its Stewards. They decided that this Parishshould be known as a Parish that attempts to live by the teachings of the Church with respect (for example, to gambling) and other activities that detract from the Orthodoxteaching regarding Stewardship. Activities that enhance fellowship and community building must conform to the concept of stewardship, properly understood. As Rev. FatherPaul Wesche writes, in The Theology of Stewardship in Light of Orthodox Tradition(Light & Life Publishing, 1990):“It is imperative that we understand the theological and spiritual contextof stewardship for in fact, the concept of stewardship takes us to the heartof the Church’s mission and life. If we fail to understand our responsibilityas stewards, we fail to be the Church. Therefore, any “program” undertakenby the Church must be submitted to the judgment of the mission of theChurch and must be used in the service of Christian stewardship properlyunderstood.”Rather than looking to our existing budget our Stewardship goals should aimhigher – and should form the basis for growing our Parish Ministries to encompass all ofthe things that a Christian Parish should be doing for our own salvation and for that ofour neighbors. We need to expand and institute programs to “feed the hungry, clothe thenaked, visit the sick, and those in prison” and to obey the commandment of Pentecost to“bring the Gospel to all people”.

James (Iakovos) the Apostle, brother of Our LordOctober 23According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before hewas betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son ofJoseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, whowas also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according tothis genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of theirkinship. This Iakovos is called the Less (Mark 15:4) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from Iakovos, theson of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this episcopalrank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of thePassover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he proclaimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come againupon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son ofDavid." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the commandof Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while heprayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of theCatholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by thisIakovos. The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamerOctober 26Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith ofChrist. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house.While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of hisbody, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him weredefeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bathhouse and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself withthe sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!"and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was thecause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet inthe bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.
