welcomeDear Friends,It is with great pleasure that we present Mission Dolores Academy’s 2017-2018 AnnualReport.Once again, it was a stellar year at MDA! As in years past, we are humbled by thegenerosity of our benefactors, by the hard work and dedication of our teachers andstaff, and most importantly, by our young scholars and their devoted families. It would bedifficult to sum up such an amazing year in one paragraph, but here is a brief look into2017-2018. 90% of our 2018 graduates were accepted to a top Catholic, Independent, orCollege Preparatory Charter school Record levels for both Reading and Math (NWEA Standardized Tests) Enrollment continues to remain strong - bolstered by 32 new MDA Tiger Cubs inKindergarten A record Luncheon honoring Father Gagan 100% teacher retention Operating costs remain flat for the third straight year Our NO BULLY program was a resounding success with disciplinary incidents down50% 10 students received the Sacrament of Baptism, 18 students received First HolyCommunion, and 21 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation Inaugural Eighth Grade Outdoor Education trip to YosemitePaul RecktenwaldHead of SchoolMeredith EssalatPrincipalAmidst all this wonderful news, the MDA community was deeply saddened by the passing of two longtime friends, benefactors, and mentors. Mr. William Buckingham and Mr.Frederick Furth both succumbed to illness and are now in the graces of God. In an effort to cultivate the vast talents and abilities of the MDA student body,partnerships have been formed to provide enrichment opportunities across allgrade levels.Students in Grades Six through Eight apply to work on a weekly basis with the Human RightsCommission of San Francisco, forming a Student Relations Council on campus to developideas on strengthening community and celebrating the diversity of MDA.Girls in Sixth through Eighth Grades are mentored by Krystle Morales and the Movemeant Foundation, focusing each week on body positivity and mindfulness through dance.Our Fifth Grade students foster a community garden in MDA’s new planter boxes under theguidance of Fresh Growth Gardens.First and Fourth Grade students learn from CUESA (Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture), spending a day at the Ferry Building’s Farmer’s Market and cooking with theirclassmates and families here on campus at Family Cooking Night.6.

Sixth Grade students head out to the Marin Headlands for three days, in partnership with NatureBridge, studying marine biology at their Golden Gate campus.Eighth Grade students head out to Yosemite National Park for one week, in partnership withNatureBridge, studying life sciences at their Yosemite Valley campus.Third and Fourth Grade girls engage in a weekly book club, SOS (Sisterhood of Solidarity),reading together and discussing ways to support and empower one another on topics likeself-esteem, friendships, and goal-setting.Fifth Grade sets sail aboard the historic Balclutha—an overnight adventure studying what it waslike to be a sailor at the turn-of-the 20th Century.Kindergarten through Third Grade and Sixth Grade learn the art of song through a partnershipwith the San Francisco Opera.
