3The Old TestamentDear friends in Christ,In my previous article I have explained that the key to understandthe Bible is to learn the structure ofthe Bible. The whole Bible is divided into two majordivisions: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Here is the key to understand the Old Testament: ofthe 46 books in the Old Testament there are 4 different kinds of books.1. Pentateuch: There are five books in this section(Genesis – Deuteronomy). The word ‘Pentateuch’ iscoming from the Greek word ‘Penta’ which means ‘five’– ‘the first five books of the Bible.’ Its Hebrew name is‘Torah’ which means ‘The Law’ or ‘The Instruction’. It explains God’s divine purpose and plan; how sin enteredthe world and God’s response to sin; God’s relationship with mankind; God’s commandments and His instructions to His people.2. Historical Books: There are 16 books in this section(Joshua – 2 Maccabees). They deal with the history ofthe nation of Israel. How they settled in the PromisedLand, the reign of Judges, the establishment of Kings, the division of Israel into the Northern and SouthernKingdoms, fall of Northern Kingdom to Assyria and thefall of Southern Kingdom to Babylon, return from exileunder the leadership of Nehemiah and Ezra and reformation under the leadership of Judas Maccabees. These first 21 books (Genesis through 2 Maccabees)cover the whole history of Israel. The other 25 books (7Wisdom Books and 18 Prophetical Books) fit somewhere in those 21 books.3. Wisdom Books: There are seven books in this section (Job – Sirach). They are also called as poeticalbooks because poetry is their form. They speak aboutreal human experiences, how our life changes underthe sun and the reality of God in our lives.4. Prophetical Books: There are 18 books in this section (Isaiah – Malachi). They spoke of God’s messageto people, warned them of coming judgement, andgave message of hope. Keep this structure in mindwhen you read the Old Testament and it will begin totake shape for you. God Bless!Next Article: New TestamentS A I N TA N N EThe Sanctuary Candle The sanctuary candle at St.Anne burns the month of August in Memory of JudySchmitt by Ann & Kevin Erlitz.Rest in Peace Yvonne Martell, one of St. Anne parishioners passed away. 4A S S U M P T I O NS A I N TJ O S E P HFAITH FORMATION:ST. JOSEPH & ASSUMPTION OF BVM:ROSE KLUGO—GRADES 6-10 ——— 715-294-2243Email rklugow@hotmail.comFirst Reconciliation: Any families with children over 7 years of age who would like their child to prepare for FirstReconciliation this year are invited to the First Reconciliation Parent Meeting and first class on Wednesday, Sept 1stfrom 6:00 - 7:00 pm in St. Joseph's social hall. What happens when we die? These are some of life’s deepest questions, rooted in the human heart’s deepest desires: happiness, love, beauty, and meaning. Where can we find the answers to these questions and these desires? Until satisfied, we are leftquestioning, longing, and searching. The Search video series guides viewers through an arc of seven episodes, examining the great big story of everything - life and death, sorrow and happiness, science and faith - as astrophysicists, psychologists, astronauts, neuroscientists, professors, athletes, artists, and the beauty of the cosmos all point to one big (and perhaps surprising)conclusion: that Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church have the best and most satisfying answers to every one of thequestions and desires of the human heart. You are invited to pause with us to contemplate the bigger picture, the bigger questions of life and our purposehere on earth. All adult parishioners are invited to "The Search", a series of 7 sessions that will include dinner, avideo viewing, and discussion in a small group setting. Sessions run Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 7:30pm beginning September 8th through October 20th in St. Joseph's Social Hall. Feel free to invite friends andfamily to experience The Search with you. Child care is available for children under 12.
