We also recommend that you practice all operations using the builtin simulator before using the Explorer .Electronic Chart: The electronic chart used by Explorer is an aid to navigation designed to supplement,not replace offi cial government charts. Only offi cial government charts supplemented by notices tomariners contain the information required for safe and prudent navigation, Always supplement theelectronic information provided by Explorer with other plotting sources such as observations, depthsoundings, radar and hand compass bearings. Should the information not agree, the discrepancy must beresolved before proceeding any further.Fuel Computer: Do not rely on the fuel computer as the sole source of information regarding availablefuel onboard. Fuel economy can change drastically depending on boat loading and sea conditions. FuelComputer information should be supplemented by visual or other checks of the fuel load. This is necessarydue to possible operator errors such as forgetting to reset the fuel used when fi lling the tank, runningthe engine with the Fuel Computer not switched on, or on other operator actions that may render thedevice inaccurate. 1 Introduction1-1 OverviewThe Northstar EXPLORER is a compact, rugged,highly integrated marine chartplotter. It is easy touse and has an easy to read color display. Complexfunctions can be performed with a few keypresses, taking the hard work out of boating.SmartCraft engine functions require aSmartCraft system to be installed. Forinformation on using SmartCraft, see theSmartCraft Gateway Installation andOperation Manual.This manual covers:The EXPLORER can send data to otherinstruments, such as an autopilot, and receivedata from other instruments.EXPLORER 550Color display, external GPS antenna.EXPLORER 550iColor display, internal GPS antenna.The available functions, displays and setupmenus depend on the optional sensors andinstruments that are installed:The Fuel functions require optionalpetrol/gasoline or SmartCraft fuel sensors tobe installed and set up.For information on installing options, see section15-2.This manual describes how to install and operatethe EXPLORER. To avoid damage, cleanthe screen only with a damp cloth and milddetergent when dirty or covered in sea salt.Avoid abrasive cleaners, petrol or other solvents.If a plug-in card gets dirty or wet, clean it with adamp cloth or mild detergent.To optimize performance, avoid walking on orjamming cables and connectors.Push the dust cover over the display when theEXPLORER is turned off.1-3 Plug-in cardsThe EXPLORER can use two kinds of plug-in card:C-MAP chart cards have chart detailsrequired for navigating in a particular region.When a chart card is plugged in, the extradetails automatically appear on the EXPLORERchart display.The EXPLORER can use NT, NT and NT-MAXcards.C-MAP user cards are used to storenavigation data. Each user card expands theEXPLORER memory and allows the data to betransfer

The chartplotter uses the Axis camera's default password to initially access the camera. When the chartplotter cannot connect to the camera because of mismatched passwords, the chartplotter displays a message that it cannot connect to the camera. When this message appears, you must reset your Axis camera password to its factory default settings.
