Vol. 5 Trinity United Methodist Church, Sarasota, FLMay 2019The most beloved Christian holy-days are both days and seasons.CHRISTMASWe celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day and for a season of 12 days leading to Epiphanywhen we remember the wise ones following the star and finding the infant Jesus. Their arrival reveals the truth that Jesus is Lord and Messiah for all people in every place.EASTERWe celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead on Easter and for a season of 50 days leadingto Pentecost when we remember the first followers receiving the empowerment of the Holy Spirit tocarry on Jesus’ witness and work throughout the world. Again, Jesus is Lord and Messiah for allpeople in every place. There’s more. Easter is a day, a season, and our new life in Christ. We are Easter People every day.Every day we embody the hope and power of the resurrection. Think of the adventurous lives wewould live if we fully claimed this truth. This is who you are. Claim it. Live it! - Lisa Colossians 3:1-3So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at theright hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for youhave died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.Live as if you are risen. The fear-tombed, nay-saying, people-pleasingprisoner of scarcity, shame and threat— that one has died. The stone of Outcomes has been rolled away. The linen grave-clothes of Consequences are lyingabandoned. You are free.Forgiven, accompanied,love-enabled, miracle-powered,you are a member of the risen body of Christ. You are those hands with holes in themJesus shows, and says, “Peace.”You are the flesh the Spirit moves to do her next wonders. You've already died and gone to heaven,no mere flesh now, but pure love, unafraid of death and its useless threats, with unshakable courage, nothing to lose, everything in your hands.Don't live as if you're afraid to be crucified.Live as if you're already risen.- Already Risen by Steve Garnaas Holmes

James MartinA God of Unconditional Love (John 3:16-17, James 2:18-19)New Sermon Series:Sit, Walk, StandThe journey of Christian maturity issimple, profound, powerful, and lifechanging. Based on Paul’s letter to theEphesians and the book Sit, Walk, Standby Watchman Nee.May 19Honoring our preschoolers and our graduates at both servicesSit (Ephesians 2:1-10)May 26Memorial Day Observance at both servicesWalk (Ephesians 4:1-6; 5:1-2)Watchman Nee was born in 1903 in Swatow,China as an answer to his mother's prayer. Havingalready borne two daughters, she prayed that if Godshould give her a son, she would give him back toGod. As the boy grew up, he showed every sign ofpromise except he had no interest in things spiritual. Itwas not till he was seventeen years of age that hewas met by the Lord. He knew at that time that hemust accept Christ Jesus as his Savior, yet he struggled over the necessity of surrendering his life to theLord. The love of Christ finally overwhelmed him andhe capitulated to Christ. This was on April 29, 1920.He had such a love for the Word of God that he studied it almost incessantly, so within a very short period he had read the whole Bible several times. He began to witness for Christ to his school mates and soon earned the nickname of "the preacher". In searching the Scripture, he (with a few other believers) discovered 'the simplicity and puritythat is towards Christ.' He determined to follow the Word of God explicitly and nothing but theWord. In 1927 he began his life work in Shanghai, where he was able to practice the vision which theLord had shown him in the Word. He understood that the eternal purpose of God is Christ and HisChurch. Through the mighty working of the Holy Spirit and the faithful ministry of this servant ofGod, this testimony spread over the vast land of China. In 1949 the Communists took over China. Knowing what would be waiting for him back home, henonetheless felt strongly his responsibility toward God and His Church. So he returned to Chinafrom Hong Kong in 1950. In April of 1952 he was seized and put in prison. He was later falselyaccused as a master spy and was sentenced to twenty years of imprisonment. In prison he wasnot allowed to do anything but what was assigned him by prison authority. At the expiration of hissentence term, he was not released, and the news arrived quickly that he died faithful to the Lord.2

Bishop Ken CarterI am serving a two-year term as president of theUMC Council of Bishops. But my primary work isas bishop as the Florida Conference. Some ofwhat is happening lately:1. We have our largest ordination class in manyyears, 17 persons to be ordained deacons andelders at Annual Conference. Of these, 10 arewomen and 7 are men. God is sending laborersinto the harvest.2. Two years ago one-half of the Bishop's Offering at Annual Conference went to ZOEzoeempowers.org) That amount, 37,000 wasmultiplied with the addition of 12 challenge giftsof 3000 each, for a total of 73,000. Over 1000new youth are in the ZOE program thanks tothese gifts.3. We now have 235 Fresh Expressions ofChurch. And we are in the beginning phaseof our Dinner Church movement, so this numberwill increase in the months to come. This is afive-year old movement in our conference. Thanks to Dan Jackson, Heather McKelvey Evans, Caitlin White, and Michael Beck.4. Our apportionment giving in 2018 to the denomination was 89%, the highest in years, andFlorida's apportionment is the second largest inthe denomination.5. We have not avoided the complex and essential conversations about LGBTQ identityand the unity of the church. Over 200 of ourchurches have participated in the POV process, which was designed by progressives, centristsand traditionalists. The next POV conversation, now in design, will be about race.6. Over 120 churches will offer an On MissionTogether weekend this spring, which is anopportunity to offer an invitation to receive thesaving grace of God, to have deep conversationand authentic fellowship, to be in service withour neighbors and to design a small group follow-up for those who accept the gospel for the firsttime or renew their faith commitments.7. Esther Rodríguez, Jose Nieves, ClarkeCampbell-Evans and Rini Hernandez offered anew vision for Latino/a Ministry for the FloridaConference in our recent cabinet meeting. Thiswill focus on reaching multiple generations whoare coming to live in Florida, and being moreopen to their gifts.3GOOD NEWS!New Church Start Update from Bishop Carter:The Florida Conference has launched elevenchurches over the past four years. On EasterSunday these new congregations had a combined worship attendance of 4614, with over400 of these being children.I’m grateful to those who have stepped out infaith to lead these new churches, reachingnew people, and to Dan Jackson, who hasguided our work in new church development. This is alongside the 235 new Fresh Expressions of Church, which is a different form ofoutreach.Taken together, this is a movement of Godthat takes risks, imagines the unseen, and isled day to day by cloud and fire (Exodus 13).Rini Hernandez will take on the leadership ofnew church development (Dan will continue toguide the Fresh Expressions), and Rini willalso shepherd a new initiative in Latino/a ministries, which will have a focus on multigenerational congregations.I share this for two reasons:To give all praise and thanks to God; and tocounter the relentlessly negative narrativeabout the United Methodist Church.God is good. God is using us. God is writing abetter story. And God is blessing us.I love our annual conference. These are justsome of the God sightings!#flumc #onmissiontogether
