Think about how you feel when someone rejectsyou. Write a short prayer, thanking God for alwaysaccepting us through His Son, Jesus.Jesus Rejected in NazarethLuke 4:14-30FOLDMAIN POINT: JESUS EXPLAINED THAT THE SCRIPTURES TELL ABOUT HIM.Jesus went to His hometown, Nazareth. On the Sabbath day, Jesus went to thesynagogue like He usually did.Jesus stood up to read Scripture. He unrolled the scroll of the prophet Isaiahand read: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me. He has chosen Me to tell good news tothe poor. He has sent Me to tell the captives that they are free, to tell the blind thatthey can see, to free people who have been treated badly, and to announce thatthe Lord’s favor is on us.” Then Jesus rolled up the scroll. He gave it back to theattendant and sat down.Jesus said, “Today as you listened to Me reading these words, they came true.”The people said good things about Jesus, and they were amazed at Him. Butsome of the people in Nazareth had known Jesus from His youth. “Isn’t thisJoseph’s son?” they asked.Jesus said, “No prophet is accepted in his hometown.” Jesus reminded thepeople of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. When there was a terrible famine inIsrael, God sent Elijah to help a widow in another land. And when Elisha was a prophet, many people in Israel had leprosy. But Elishadid not heal them. Instead, he healed a man named Naaman from Syria. The people listening to Jesus in the synagogue became angry. They forced Jesusout of town.Christ Connection: Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiahwrote about God’s plan to send a Messiah. He would bring good news and redeempeople who were broken and hurting. Jesus read Isaiah’s words and told everyone whowas listening that He is the promised Messiah.FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS Why do you think the people ofNazareth wanted to see miracles? Why do you think they rejected Jesus? 2016 LifeWay23

Match each quotation to the person who said it. Look up the Scripture references in the Bible to check your answers.“How can anyone beborn when he is old?”(John 3:4)“Come, see a man who toldme everything I ever did!Could this be the Messiah?”(John 4:29)“The Spirit of the Lord ison Me, because He hasanointed Me to preachgood news to the poor.”(Luke 4:18)“He must increase,.”but I must decrease)303:n(JohFace Time Draw a face that shows each emotion. Sojourn Kids AssemblyUnit 21, Session 4Title: Jesus Rejected in NazarethScripture: Luke 4:14-30Supply List: homemade scroll, any tool such as a wrench, etc.Main Point: Jesus explained that the Scriptures tell about Himor, “The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus.”Big Picture Question: Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus saidHe is the Messiah.Introduce It:When it’s your turn, run into the assembly area acting likeyou’re out of breath and holding a homemade scroll (it can be asimple piece of rolled paper). Loudly make the statementsbelow–still breathing heavily like you ran to the class, perhapsholding your stomach like you would after a marathon.Say: I have some great news!! You are not going to believe it!The news I have is so great, it will change your life. You’ll neverbe the same after I tell you this awesome news!Ask: Do you want to know what the news is? Are you sure?Say: Here goes! (Act like you’re reading from the scroll. Let thesuspense build. Have fun with it.) “Today is Sunday!!!!”Ask: Isn’t that life-changing news? You don’t think so? Why? Ifthat’s not great news, what would be good news for a kid? (Letthem use their imagination and give a few suggestions.)Say: You’re right about the news on my scroll–it wasn’tamazing. I’m glad it’s Sunday, but Sundays are pretty normal. They happen every week. Today I will be teaching about newsthat really is good. It’s great! It’s the best news ever!Main Point: The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus(Use only 1 motion. During the main point and throughout thelesson, have them put their hands high in the air & shake themany time they hear “Good News.” The motion is similar to beingon a roller coaster or an excited fan at a basketball game.)Explain It:Say: At SojournKids, we learn from the Bible. It’s the mostimportant book in the whole world because it gives us God’sWord about Jesus. Today’s lesson is from Luke, Chapter 4.Say: When Jesus began to do the work God had sent him to do,he went back to his hometown where he had grown up as a boy.Ask: Do you know where he grew up? (Not Bethlehem. That’swhere he was born. He later moved and grew up in Nazareth.)Say: On the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue and stoodup to read from God’s Word. His Bible didn’t look like ours(with a book cover and spine). He read from a scroll like the one

I’m carrying. Picture the scene! Imagine as he was handed thescroll and began to read!Ask: What Old Testament verse do you think he read? (Letthem guess.) Listen, then I’ll tell you where it’s from:Ask: Isaiah was an OT prophet with a message much moreimportant. Who was Isaiah preaching about? Jesus said, “Isaiahwas talking about me.” Listen to him:“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed meHe began by saying to them, “Today this scripture isfulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and wereto proclaim GOOD NEWS to the poor. He has sent me toproclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sightfor the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the yearof the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave itback to the attendant and sat down. (Lk 4:18-20)amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’tthis Joseph’s son?” they asked. Jesus said to them, “Surelyyou will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what wehave heard that you did in Capernaum.’” (Luke 4:21-23)Say: Jesus read from Isaiah 61. Isaiah promised Jesus wouldcome! Isaiah promised he would have God’s Spirit upon him.God would send him to give GOOD NEWS to the poor, to setfree people in prison to sin and suffering, and to make the blindsee. Isaiah wrote about the future before it happened.Ask: Have you ever asked someone to prove something theysaid they could do? For instance, if a boy bragged that he can hita homerun, you might say, “Prove it!” If a girl bragged that shecan run faster than anyone else, you might say, “Prove it!”Say: Imagine how cool it would be if someone told your futuretoday before it happened. Picture how you’d feel if you wentback to your classroom, started eating your Goldfish, and thenone of your friends tells you, “Today, on your way home fromchurch, a purple elephant is going to fall out of the sky and landon the hood of your car. Then, when you get home, you’ll go toyour bedroom and find 25 pink monkeys jumping on your bed. Then, on your way to school tomorrow, you’ll discover that yourschool has been replaced by Kings Island!” All that might seemcrazy, until it actually happens. If it happened, you’d call yourfriend a prophet (someone who preaches about the future).Say: Thankfully, Jesus didn’t just say it. He proved it! In theverses that follow, Jesus did everything Isaiah promised (Luke4:31-44). He told a demon to leave a man’s body. The demonobeyed. He told a fever to stop making Simon’s mother sick. Thefever obeyed. He helped many poor & sick people. Then he said,“I have to keep going. God has sent me to bring GOOD NEWS!”Main Point: The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about JesusConnect it:Say: In my hand I’m holding a tool (any tool will work such as

a wrench, pliers, channel locks, etc.).Ask: Does anyone know what this tool is used for? Is it to brushmy teeth? (Pretend to do this.) Is it to comb my hair? (Pretend).Say: You’re right. This tool has a specific purpose and is veryimportant. (Briefly explain the tool.) Because it’s so important, Ineed to know what to do with it. The same is true with God’sGOOD NEWS. Because the whole Bible tells us about it, andbecause it’s all about Jesus, we must know what to do with it.1. First, let’s believe it!Luke wanted his readers to believe in and follow JesusChrist. Trust the gospel. Trust Jesus.2. Also, let’s share it!Luke wrote so his readers would know that the gospel isfor all people–no matter what country they’re from, howmuch money they have, or how popular. Think of a friendyou need to talk with about Jesus & invite to SojournKids.Let’s say the main point one more time: The whole Bibletells us GOOD NEWS about JesusPrayer: Pray that the kids will believe and share the gospel.Written by: Matt FriendResources: The Gospel Story Bible curriculum (Machowski)
