AGO Code of Professional StandardsMembers of the AGO are bound by the Code of Ethics and guided bythe Code of Professional Standards. Members dedicate themselvesto the highest standard of professionalism, integrity and competence.The following principles are guidelines for the conduct of members infulfilling their obligations as professional musicians.Approved by the National Council 7/02/00, as amended 4/16/07Skills:1. Members develop and maintain skills in performance, improvisation, service playing, conducting, arranging, and composingcommensurate with their duties.2. Members stay abreast of current developments in liturgy, hymnody, performance practice, and musicology through continuingeducation.3. Members become knowledgeable in the liturgy and worshiptradition of the institutions they serve.4. Members acquire business, administrative and interpersonalskills to perform their duties.Employment Matters:1. Members agree to employment only after reaching a clear understanding of the position, the employer’s expectations, andthe lines of accountability.2. Members request written contracts that protect employee andemployer.3. Members maintain courteous and respectful relationships withother staff members and members of their congregations, making an effort to resolve potential conflicts as soon as they become evident.4. Members address differences with employing institutionsthrough appropriate channels, including, but not limited to, theircontract, the institution’s personnel policies manual, and theGuild’s Procedures for dealing with Complaints about Termination.Respect for Colleagues:1. Members supervise other musicians in a professional and courteous manner.2. Members respect the intellectual property rights of composers,authors and publishers by complying with the Copyright Lawand licensing requirements regarding reproduction, recording,distribution, broadcasting and performing rights.3. Members address differences with other members of the AGOby following the procedures outlined in the Discipline.4. Members do not discriminate against others on the basis ofrace, national origin, age, religious affiliation, gender, maritalstatus, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition(including, but not limited to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).5. Members do not use AGO affiliation or membership informationpublicly (except for biographical purposes) to endorse, for commercial advantage, the financial and business goals or the products and services of others or to further any political goals.421

The American Guild of OrganistsThe American Guild of Organists (AGO) is the national professional association serving the organ and choral music fields. The Guild servesover 20,000 members in 330 chapters throughout the United States,Asia, and Australia.Founded in 1895 as both an educational and service organization, theGuild seeks to set and maintain high musical standards and to promoteunderstanding and appreciation of all aspects of organ and choral music.Under the leadership of the National Council, a network of volunteercommittees and officials at the regional, district, and local levels directsthe activities of the Guild. The National Headquarters in New York Citycoordinates publication, administration, and development activities of theorganization. The purposes of the American Guild of Organists are: To advance the cause of organ and choral music, to increase theircontributions to aesthetic and religious experiences, and to promotetheir understanding, appreciation and enjoyment.To improve the proficiency of organists and choral conductors.To evaluate attainments in organ playing, choral techniques, conducting, theory, and general knowledge of music, and to grant certificates to those who pass examinations at specified levels of attainment.To provide members with opportunities to meet for discussion ofprofessional topics, and to pursue other such activities as contributeto the fulfillment of the purposes of the Guild.Guild activities include examinations for professional certificationwith an extensive list of publications, recordings and learning resources for all levels of interest. The Guild sponsors competitions inperformance, improvisation, and composition. National and regionalconventions held in alternate years present the finest performers.The American Organist monthly magazine is the most widely readjournal devoted to organ and choral music in the world.From AGO National Headquarters—Revised December 3, 2007AGO MembershipAll individuals interested in the organ and choral music fields are invitedto join the American Guild of Organists. Membership is open to everyone,regardless of denominational affiliation or musical ability. Membershipstarts at the Chapter level and annual dues are collected by NationalHeadquarters (with portions sent to local chapters for their use).Lifetime membership is a new and exciting membership option for thosewho wish to declare their timeless support o the Guild by making a commitment to Guild membership for life. Never write a check for AGO membership renewal again! AGO National Headquarters will remit the chapterportion of your membership dues to the local chapter of your choice onan individual basis. Lifetime Membership is available for 3,000, either asa lump sum or payable over six years.205

Voting members are entitled to enjoy the privileges andare expected to accept the responsibilities of membership in the Guild.Members shall be considered equally for Guild offices and participationin Guild activities. These are the rules that shall be considered bindingupon all voting members in good standing.RULE 1. Members shall promote good working relationships within theAmerican Guild of Organists and shall respect the employment of colleagues. Members shall address differences between themselves andother members by following the procedures outlined in the Discipline.RULE 2. Members shall not seek or appear to be seeking employmentfor themselves, a student, or a colleague, in a position held by someoneelse. Members shall apply for employment only for a position which theemployer, with the knowledge of the incumbent musician, has officiallyand publicly declared vacant by announcement of the vacancy.RULE 3. In cases pending under the Procedures or in cases where theNational Council has determined that a position has been made vacantby wrongful termination of a member of the American Guild of Organists, members shall not seek or accept regular or permanent employment for themselves, a student, or colleague at that institution until theNational Council is satisfied that differences between the Guild and theInstitution have been resolved. Interim services may be provided for aperiod of 90 days.RULE 4. Members shall obtain the approval of the incumbent musicianbefore accepting an engagement for a wedding, funeral, or other service requested by a third party. In such cases, the incumbent shouldreceive his/her customary fee, and the third party is expected to provideit. It is the responsibility of the guest members to inform the third partyof this rule. Members are advised to protect themselves as incumbentsin this regard by negotiating employment contracts which secure thesefees and which provide some responsibility, oversight, and control as tochoice of music, etc.RULE 5. Members shall conduct professional activities with truthfulness,honesty, and integrity, and shall maintain sensitivity in matters of a personal or confidential nature.RULE 6. The Irene S. AtorAGO Music ScholarshipThe Irene S. Ator AGO Music Scholarship bean in 2002 tohelp young organists receive the proper training in the earlystages of their development. To date, the Scholarship hasawarded funds to 26 students to help further their studies tobecome qualified church musicians. Applications for futureconsideration will be considered. Once applications havebeen reviewed students will be scheduled for an auditionthat will take place in late May or early June.
