Rev 5.29.19INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEWThe Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) originated in 2015 as the eighth disciplinein the School of Health Profession at Concordia University Wisconsin. The Department ofSpeech-Language consists of an undergraduate major in Communication Sciences andDisorders, a minor in Communication Sciences, a leveling program in Speech-LanguagePathology and a graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology. In addition to these preservice offerings, the department is also committed to ongoing continuing education to localpracticing clinicians. In all of it endeavors, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology isfocused on Interprofessional Education and Practice.GRADUATE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: SLP GRADUATE PROGRAMThe two-year graduate, full-time Master of Science program in speech-language pathology is designedto prepare students to become competent speech-language pathologists who provide quality care in arespectful, culturally sensitive, caring, and knowledgeable manner. Committed and experienced facultywill guide the didactic program along with high-quality clinical experiences to prepare students forprofessional certification and licensure.The Department of Speech-Language Pathology is committed to:PROMOTING EXCELLENCESERVING COMMUNITYEMBRACING DIVERSITYINSPIRING COMPASSIONFOSTERING CRITICAL THINKINGVALUING INDEPENDENCEConcordia University Wisconsin Department of Speech-Language Pathology is committed to offering anengaging environment and access to off-site community service and clinical opportunities, in addition tothe soon to-be-completed, state-of-the art, on-campus Concordia University Wisconsin Speech,Language, and Hearing clinic. Clinical and therapeutic services are provided to students at LUMIN(Lutheran Urban Mission Initiative, Inc.) elementary schools throughout the Milwaukee area, individualsaffiliated with Portal Industries in Grafton, and more.In addition to clinical instruction/supervision, didactic clinical instruction is provided in conjunction withall on-campus clinical education opportunities (placements). This didactic instruction is in a smallseminar-type setting focused on topics related to the collective caseload of the students in the group.Topics included will include but not be limited to clinical procedures, medical and clinical diagnoses, andcultural and ethical considerations.Upon successful completion of all requirements and graduation from the Master of Science in speechlanguage pathology program at CUW, individuals will be prepared to apply for initial licensure requiredfor practice in the state of Wisconsin and will have demonstrated the knowledge and skills necessary forASHA certification with a faith-based focus. Students will have completed the required 25 hours ofobservation and 375 hours of clinical practicum and be prepared to transition into their clinical1

Upon completion of their clinical fellowship, students will have completed all therequisite knowledge and skills competencies and will be eligible to apply for their certificate of clinicalcompetence (CCC) through ASHA. Additionally, students will have demonstrated effective andprofessional interaction skills with patients, families, and other health care professionals through servicelearning and/or the provision of clinical services in the CUW Interprofessional Education (IPE) clinic whileworking collaboratively with other disciplines.This program will require successful completion of 42 core academic credit hours, 6 credit hours ofelectives, and 9 credit hours of clinical practicum resulting in a minimum of 57 credit hours ofcoursework (academic and clinical) for completion.Completion of an undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at CUW does notguarantee students admission to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology.For more information, visit WWW.CUW.EDU/SLPScope of practiceStudents and faculty clinicians assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication,cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in individuals across the life span.Service delivery areas include all aspects of communication and swallowing and related areas thatimpact communication and swallowing: speech production, fluency, language, cognition, voice,resonance, feeding, swallowing, and hearing.For more information, please visit WWW.CUW.EDU/SLHCLINIC .ASHA Code of Ethics can be found at http://www.asha.org/Code-of-Ethics/Faculty, staff, and students are bound to the ASHA Code of Ethics. Students shouldbecome well acquainted with the Code of Ethics so that the judgments and decisions made as agraduate student form a solid, ethical foundation for a future as a professional speech-languagepathologist.MISSION STATEMENT OF DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGYThe Department of Speech-Language Pathology is dedicated to the missions of Concordia UniversityWisconsin and the School of Health Professions and is focused on developing independent life-longlearners with strong critical thinking and communication abilities. In addition, the department ofSpeech-Language Pathology aims to prepare students for the opportunities and rigors of a vocationpositively impacting communicatively-challenged individuals across the lifespan and their families byproviding outstanding academic/clinical education, as well as community outreach. The department alsoaims to support the continuing education needs of practicing clinicians to ultimately have a positiveimpact on individuals with communication and/or swallowing challenges. This professional education isgrounded in faith, excellence, and service to others.2

Rev 5.29.19STRATEGIC PLANNING EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) strategic plan process occurs over three years with thecurrent plan addressing 2018 through 2021. The institutional planning is focused the purposefuldevelopment of Concordia’s people to accelerate the creation of an uncommon Concordia Experience.The University strategies are grouped in the following areas: Academic Planning; Student Development;Enrollment Management; Strategic Finance; and Operations and Administration.The School of Health Professions (SHP) strategies align with the University Strategic Plan and are mindfulof the five planning areas defined in the CUW plan. The SHP has identified five strategies in its currentstrategic plan. These include: (1) marketing of health professions; (2) increasing SHP student enrollment;(3) enhancing and increasing consistent student admissions processes across SHP programs; (4)developing of clinics and Interprofessional education and practice services to enhance clinical education;(5) engaging in community service and mission-focused global education outreach.The Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) has identified six strategic initiatives to advancethe programs within the department in a manner that articulates with the institutional and school planssummarized above. Specific foci of this plan include: (1) recruiting and hiring additional faculty and staffto engage in the ongoing development of our graduate SLP program, clinics, and continuing educationofferings; (2) implementing, assessing, and refining our academic and clinical curriculums and processes;(3) marketing of our professions, SLP graduate program, and Interprofessional education/practiceopportunities; (4) implementing clinic policies, offerings, and services in our on-campus and communitybased clinics to enhance the clinical education of our students; (5) enhancing student recruitment,development, and retention as evidenced by increasing graduate student admissions and maintainingprogram enrollment targets; and (6) providing current best-practice academic and clinical instructionwith a focus on evidenced-based practice as evidenced by attainment of graduate program accreditationby the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA).Program AccreditationThe Master of Science (M.S.) program in speech/language pathology at Concordia University Wisconsinis a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and SpeechLanguage Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. This is a “preaccreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum periodof five years.Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language PathologyAmerican Speech-Language Hearing Association2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, MD 20850800-498-2071The CAA has determined that theprogram demonstrates sufficient compliance with the Standards for Accreditation as outlined in the2019 Candidacy Compliance Continuum. As a result the CAA has awarded candidacy for a period of fiveyears beginning 3/1/2019 through 2/29/2024. Award of candidacy allows the program to matriculatestudents into the program as it continues to document compliance with accreditation standards for theduration of the candidacy accreditation cycle.3

Upon completion of the SLP graduate program, studentswill have completed all required knowledge and skills competencies consistent with ASHA’s Council forClinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC – see link below). Further, allstudents will have met the required 25 hours of observation and 375 hours of clinical practicum to beprepared to transition into their clinical fellowship year following graduation. All competencies andclinical hours will be documented and maintained by the program using CALIPSO, a web-based academicand clinical management program. In addition, the SLP graduate program will prepare students to passthe Praxis examination in Speech-Language Pathology (https://www.ets.org/praxis/asha).Upon completion of their clinical fellowship, students will have completed all the requisite knowledgeand skills competencies and will be eligible to apply for their certificate of clinical competence (CCC)through ASHA.
