IntroductionAmerican University of Sharjah (AUS) wasfounded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr.bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of theSupreme Council of the United Arab Emiratesand Ruler of Sharjah, who envisioned AUS asa leading educational institution in the Gulfregion. American University of Sharjah is anindependent, not-for-profit, coeducationalinstitution. All classes andadministrative functions are conducted inEnglish.Islam is the official religion of the state, andArab Islamic culture predominates in the UAE.The nation is also distinguished by its tolerancetoward its large expatriate communities, whichcomprise diverse nationalities, cultures andreligious beliefs. The bachelor of sciencedegree programs in chemical engineering, civilengineering, computer engineering, electricalengineering and mechanical engineering offeredby the College of Engineering are accredited bythe Engineering Accreditation Commission ofABET (www.abet.org). The bachelor of sciencedegree program in computer science offered bythe College of Engineering is accredited by theComputing Accreditation Commission of ABET(www.abet.org). The School of BusinessAdministration is accredited by the Associationto Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB International), www.aacsb.edu. TheBachelor of Architecture program of the Collegeof Architecture, Art and Design is accredited bythe National Architectural Accrediting Board(NAAB) of the United States, www.naab.org.

Services and Resources1.1 On-Campus Services1.1.1 BankingLocated on the ground floor of the MainBuilding, Sharjah Islamic Bank offersbanking services such as checking andsaving accounts, ATM transactions andtransfer of funds. ATMs are located at thebank, the Student Center and the Women’sWelcome Center.1.1.2 BookstoreLocated in the Student Center basement,the bookstore sells all required textbooks,other books, art supplies, stationery,notebooks and other general gift items.1.1.3 Copy CenterThe AUS Copy Center is located on theground floor of the Main Building. It servesfaculty, staff and students by providing avariety of quality and reasonably priceddocument reproduction services. Thecenter also offers professional binding,lamination, stapling and other relatedservices.1.1.4 DiningMany restaurants, coffee shops and snackservices are located in the Student Center.Most of these outlets offer a deliveryservice.Most residential halls are equipped withkitchenettes, which include refrigeratorsand hot plates, in addition to vendingmachines containing snacks and beverages.1.1.5 ID CardsStudents must carry their IDs with themat all times and have them available uponrequest. ID cards must be validated bythe Office of Protocol and Security everysemester (including summer term) toavoid charges. The Office of Protocol andSecurity also issues AUS ID cards for faculty,staff and their dependents.111.1.6 Immigration-Related ServicesImmigration-related services are offeredfor students, faculty and staff, includingpassport custody, medical test assistance,and the processing of visas and residencepermits. For specific details, contact PublicRelations at gr@aus.edu.1.1.7 Lost and FoundThe lost and found is located at theStudent Center reception desk. Lost andfound items are held for a specific periodof time. After the holding period expires,the procedure for disposing unclaimeditems goes into effect.1.1.8 Mini-MartsThe Sharjah Co-Op Supermarkets provide alarge variety of grocery items, fresh fruitsand vegetables, and other householditems. One outlet is located in the StudentCenter; a second outlet is located in theWomen’s Welcome Center.1.1.9 ParkingParking lots, free and paid, are providedfor faculty, staff, students and visitors.Vehicles must be registered with the Officeof Protocol and Security, which is locatedon the mezzanine floor of the MainBuilding, (offices MM 29/30/31/32/33); itcan be reached at 515 2114/515 2074 orat aus security@aus.edu. Once the vehicleis registered, a car parking card is issued.Faculty, staff and students using rented carsor using cars on a temporary basis, as wellas visitors, are issued temporary permits.AUS parking cards should always be visiblydisplayed on the car’s windshield. Thesestickers must be renewed during the firsttwo weeks of every academic year.Parking regulations and details on issuingcar stickers are posted on the universitywebsite.The university reserves the right tomake changes in urgent situations withoutany prior notice.

121. Services and Resources1.1.10 Personal ServicesA beauty salon is located in the Women’sWelcome Center, and a barbershop islocated in the Student Center. Regular anddry-clean laundry services are available onthe west and east sides of campus near thefaculty housing.1.1.11 PharmacyLocated in the Student Center, thepharmacy is part of the health coverageprogram and offers a full range ofmedication and various health, hygieneand cosmetic products.1.1.12 Post Office and MailAUS provides a full-service post office onthe ground floor of the Main Building.Mail is sorted daily in the post office anddistributed to all offices. All mail intendedfor university offices and for those residingon campus should be addressed to:American University of SharjahPO Box 26666Sharjah, UAE1.1.13 SafetyCampus safety is monitored by the Safetydivision, which provides information onoccupational safety and health hazards,and promotes a safe and healthyenvironment on campus. The Safetydivision is located in the Campus ServiceCenter (office 1022) and can be reached at515 2068.1.1.14 SecurityThe Office of Protocol and Security isresponsible for campus security, as wellas serving as the university’s contact withfederal and local government entities,embassies and consulates. The office alsoprovides services such as AUS ID cards,parking stickers, lost and found, assistancewith car registration, assistance withprocedures related to traffic violations andon-campus accidents, vehicle assistance1. Services and Resourcesand official letters required by theUniversity City Police.The Office of Protocol and Securitymonitors security on the entire campus,including residential halls and all universityowned buildings, and works to ensurethat UAE laws and AUS regulationsare implemented. If a violation occurs,the security officers have the right towithdraw any ID. AUS reserves the right torestrict or prohibit access to the campus.The office oversees the campus trafficand parking system and is authorized toenforce all related regulations. It alsoprovides security personnel 24 hours aday on university premises, including theresidential areas, and for campus eventswhen requested.The Office of Protocol and Security islocated in the west Mezzanine Floor of theMain Building (offices MM 29/30/31/32/33)and can be reached at 06 515 2114/5152074/2075 or at aus security@aus.edu.1.1.15 TransportationAUS offers a shuttle bus service betweenthe student residential halls and otherareas of campus. Students who wishto commute off campus may contactTransportation Services, which providestransportation to the cities of Sharjah,Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. For moreinformation on all routes and schedules,contact Transportation Services at 5152171 or visit www.aus.edu/parking-andtransportation. For taxi services,call 600 525252.1.1.16 Travel OfficeThe Travel Office, located in the StudentCenter, offers efficient and cost-effectiveservices designed to assist all AUS students,faculty and staff. The office handles alltravel arrangements, negotiates the mostfavorable rates and provides informationon special offers.1.1.17 University Health CenterThe University Health Center (UHC)provides primary health care to all AUSstudents, and faculty and staff membersand their dependents. The center is openSunday–Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. and provides 24-hour accident andemergency care as well. Depending on theseverity of the illness, patients are referredto hospitals for further treatment. Greatemphasis is placed on making the campusa healthy and safe place to study, workand live through providing preliminaryphysical examinations to all studentsand employees as a mandatory part ofregistration/employment process, followedby continued quality care throughout theirtime at AUS, including fitness checks forsports teams.The UHC is staffed with a highly qualifiedmedical team, which includes generalpractitioners, clinical counselors, andregistered nurses. The UHC is equippedwith an observation room (day care)to closely monitor patients for shortstays before transferring to a hospitalif required. The UHC has access to anon-campus laboratory and pharmacy toassist in serving the AUS community. Anambulance is on standby 24 hours a daywithin University City.1.1.17.1 Health Education ProgramsAs part of an educational institution, theUHC plays an active role in educatingthe university community and promoteson-campus health and wellness activitiesthroughout the academic year. UHCprograms include awareness campaignson health-related issues such as first-aidtraining and CPR courses.1.1.17.2 University Counseling ServicesUniversity Counseling Services (UCS) offerssupport services to enhance the success ofstudents. These services include assistingwith academic growth, educational and13career goals, problem solving, decisionmaking, understanding and appreciationof oneself, and interpersonal relationships.UCS provides different types of counselingservices: individual counseling, groupcounseling, crisis counseling and personalitytesting, and the Let’s Talk program.Counseling is strictly confidential. Theinformation shared with a studentcounselor will not be disclosed to anotherindividual or organization without thewritten consent of the student. Servicesare free, voluntary and available to allundergraduate and graduate studentscurrently enrolled at AUS.Appointments may be arranged by visitingthe UCS at the rear of the University HealthCenter. For more information, please emailUCS at ucs@aus.edu.1.1.17.3 Health Insurance Plans forStudentsAs part of the registration procedures,every undergraduate student must enrollin one of two health insurance plans (PlanI and Plan II) by visiting the UniversityHealth Center and completing thenecessary paperwork.Plan I is compulsory for AUS-sponsoredundergraduate students but optional forthose who are covered by private insurance(proof of coverage must be submittedto UHC). Plan I students must submit therequired health insurance registrationdocuments by the semester registrationdeadline to avoid incurring governmentfines at the time of UAE residence visarenewal. The University Health Center willnot be liable for any such fines.Plan II is compulsory for all undergraduatestudents who are not enrolled in Plan I.For more information on the healthinsurance plans, visitwww.aus.edu/health-center.
