FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS A: Todos los que Celebran su Cumpleaños en SeptiembreNo sacrifice is too extreme in pursuit of adream. We will forego sleep, the enjoyment of afavorite pastime, the company of good friends—even the pleasure of good food. Ask anyone whohas spent hours preparing for a recital, trying outfor a position on an athletic team, or studying foran entrance exam. The same is true when one’slivelihood is involved. Ask farmers, people in themilitary, teachers, or health-care workers. Ask newparents, or even those who have been at it for along time. If we really value something orsomeone, no sacrifice is too great—at least for awhile—when that cherished goal is in view.We don’t seem as willing to forfeit comfort whennegative inclinations are involved, and we all havethem: rivalry, jealousy, fury, selfishness, slander,gossip, conceit, to name a few. We know that suchpettiness or rank cruelty can harm us as well asthose we offend, but too often we seem unwillingto restrain such inclinations.In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus speaks quitestrongly to such reticence. Does he really expectus to maim ourselves? Isn’t that a bit extreme?The fact is, when we try to purge ourselves ofreprehensible behavior it is like cutting off our handor plucking out our eye. Ask anyone who dealswith an addiction. The East Baton Rouge Parish is the third most populated Parish in Louisiana, after Orleans Parish (484,647) and Jefferson Parish (455,466). However, in the 1990s it was also one of the fastest growing Parishes in the State of Louisiana; the Parish added about 38,000 people, second only to St. Tammany Parish which added 46,760 people.
